5SOS5 is the fifth studio album by Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, released on 23 September 2022 through BMG Rights Management.[2] It was preceded by the release of the singles "Complete Mess", "Take My Hand", "Me Myself & I", "Blender", "Bad Omens" and "Older" (featuring Vietnamese-American singer Sierra Deaton, partner of band member Luke Hemmings). The track list was revealed on 10 May 2022,[3] while the album was announced alongside the release of "Me Myself & I" on 11 May 2022.[4]

The band promoted the album whilst on the Take My Hand World Tour, which officially began in Dublin on 3 April 2022.[5] "Easy for You to Say" and "Blender" were first performed live on the tour. It will be further promoted with The 5 Seconds of Summer Show Tour, beginning in South America in July 2023.

Background

5 Seconds of Summer spent two years working on the album, beginning after the release of Calm in 2020. Luke Hemmings called the lyrical content written for the album "extremely introspective". The band wrote and produced most of the album themselves, including the first two singles, "Complete Mess" and "Take My Hand".[4][5]

Singles

The album's lead single, "Complete Mess", was released on 2 March 2022.[6] It reached number 85 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in April 2022.[7]

The second single, "Take My Hand", followed on 1 April 2022,[8] and charted at number 72 on the Irish Singles Chart.[9]

Third single "Me Myself & I" was released alongside the album announcement on 11 May 2022.[4] It peaked at number 90 on the ARIA Singles Chart.[10]

The fourth single "Blender" was released with no prior announcement on 13 July 2022, after the band had begun performing it live on the Take My Hand tour.

The fifth single "Older" (featuring Sierra Deaton) was released on 7 September 2022, after the band released a snippet of Hemmings singing "Older" on their social media pages the previous day; however, it was not announced the song would be released the next day.[11] A video of the song, featuring an end-of-the-world scenario, was released on 18 October 2022.[12]

The promotional single "Bad Omens" was released on 23 September 2022. A video of the song, featuring a romance car, was released on 26 September 2022.

Matt Collar of AllMusic gave the album a 4 out of 5 stars and wrote that "much of the album brings to mind the Weeknd's distinctive brand of atmospheric pop -- songs shot through with a yearning, after-hours regret and spiritual modern-rock uplift". He praised the songs "Complete Mess", "Me Myself & I", "Take My Hand", and "Bad Omens".[13] Clash called the album 5 Seconds of Summer's "most cohesive and impressive work to date".[14] Cara-Louise Scott from The Indiependent praised it as "a beautifully hand-crafted album, symbolising eleven years of the band’s musical experience."[16]

The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 48,000 equivalent album units sold in its first week in the US, including 36,000 in pure album sales.[17] The album charted in the top 10 in an additional ten countries, including at number one in the UK and Australia.[18]

5 Seconds of Summer ist eine australische Pop-Rock-Band aus Sydney, die seit Mitte der 2010er Jahre international erfolgreich ist.

Geschichte

5 Seconds of Summer wurde Anfang 2011 von Luke Robert Hemmings, Michael Gordon Clifford und Calum Thomas Hood gegründet, die gemeinsam das Northwest Christian College in Sydney besuchten. Sie fingen an Cover von bekannten Liedern auf YouTube hochzuladen. Ihr Cover von Chris Browns und Justin Biebers Hit Next 2 You erreichte bis heute über 3.600.000 Aufrufe.[1] Vor ihrem ersten Auftritt im Dezember 2011 holten sie als Schlagzeuger Ashton Fletcher Irwin dazu, der aus ihrem gemeinsamen Bekanntenkreis stammte.[2][3] Seitdem hat sich die Zusammensetzung der Band nicht verändert. Auf YouTube erreichten sie in kurzer Zeit über 4 Millionen Aufrufe und bauten eine große Fangemeinde auf sozialen Netzwerken wie Twitter und Facebook auf.[3]

2012 erregte die Band einiges Interesse von großen Musiklabels und -verlagen und unterzeichnete schließlich einen Vertrag mit Sony ATV Music Publishing.[4] Obwohl sie weiterhin keine weitere Unterstützung erhielten, außer auf Facebook und Twitter,[4] erreichte ihre erste musikalische Veröffentlichung, eine EP mit dem Namen Somewhere New, Platz 3 in den iTunes-Charts in Australien[4] und landete in den Top 20 in Neuseeland und Schweden.

Großen internationalen Erfolg erreichten sie, als Louis Tomlinson aus der britisch-irischen Boyband One Direction einen Link zu dem YouTube-Video von ihrem Lied Gotta Get Out twitterte. In diesem Tweet erwähnte er, dass er schon für eine Weile ein Fan von 5 Seconds of Summer sei.[5] Weitere Aufmerksamkeit erreichten 5 Seconds of Summer, als sie am 19. November 2012 ihre Single Out of My Limit veröffentlichten und Niall Horan, ebenfalls ein Mitglied der Boyband One Direction, einen Link zu ihrem Video twitterte,[6] das so innerhalb von 24 Stunden über 100.000 Aufrufe erhielt.[7]

5 Seconds of Summer verbrachte die zweite Hälfte des Jahres 2012 mit dem Schreiben neuer Songs, wobei ihnen Christian Lo Russo und Joel Chapman der australischen Band Amy Meredith halfen.[8] Mit ihnen schrieben sie zwei weitere Lieder für ihre Somewhere New EP: Beside You und Unpredictable.

Im Dezember 2012 begaben sich die Jungs auf eine Songwriting-Reise nach London, wo sie mit verschiedenen bekannten Künstlern wie McFly,[9] Roy Stride von Scouting for Girls, Nick Hodgson von Kaiser Chiefs, Jamie Scott,[10] Jake Gosling, Steve Robson und James Bourne von Busted zusammenarbeiteten.[11]

Die EPs She Looks So Perfect, Don’t Stop, Amnesia und Good Girls wurden 2014 veröffentlicht.

5 Seconds of Summer (2014)

5 Seconds of Summer veröffentlichten im Juni 2014 ihr Debütalbum mit dem Titel 5 Seconds of Summer.[12] In den USA wurde das Album am 22. Juli 2014 veröffentlicht. Es erreichte nicht nur in Australien und Neuseeland, sondern auch in den USA Platz 1 und kam in vielen weiteren Ländern in die Top 10. Als Singles waren Don’t Stop und Amnesia erfolgreich, letztere verkaufte sich allein in USA über eine Million Mal. Ende des Jahres erschien mit Good Girls die vierte offizielle Liedauskopplung, die ebenfalls noch einmal international in die Charts kam.

Mit She’s Kinda Hot erschien bereits im Juli 2015 das nächste neue Lied. Es war erneut in vielen Ländern erfolgreich und kündigte das zweite Album Sounds Good Feels Good noch im selben Jahr an. Das Album erschien am 23. Oktober 2015.[13]

Mit Girls Talk Boys erschien am 15. Juli 2016 eine neue Single der Band. Diese ist auf dem Soundtrack zum neuen Ghostbusters-Film enthalten.[14]

2016 absolvierten 5 Seconds Of Summer zudem eine Welttournee namens Sounds Live Feels Live, während welcher sie in Europa, Asien und den USA Konzerte gaben.

Weiterhin haben sie mit der japanischen Rockband One Ok Rock den Track Take What You Want aufgenommen, der auf dessen Album zu hören ist.[15]

Am 22. Februar 2018 veröffentlichte die Band die Vorabsingle Want You Back und kündigten eine neue Tour für 2018 an.[16][17] Am 15. Juni 2018 erschien ihr drittes Album Youngblood, mit dem sie sich vom früheren Pop-Punk in Richtung reiner Pop mit stärkerem Einsatz von Synthesizern bewegten.[18] Wie die zwei vorherigen Alben gelangte auch dieses auf die Spitzenposition der Billboard 200 und der australischen Charts. Die gleichnamige Single Youngblood war ebenfalls erfolgreich in den Charts. Im Oktober 2018 veröffentlichte die Band eine Coverversion von Killer Queen als Teil einer dreiteiligen Serie für die gemeinnützige Organisation Mercury Phoenix Trust.

Im Februar 2020 traten 5 Seconds of Summer bei „Fire Fight Australia“ auf, einem Benefizkonzert zugunsten von Opfern der australischen Waldbrände. Am 27. März 2020 erschien ihr viertes Album Calm. Der Titel des Albums setzt sich aus den Anfangsbuchstaben der Vornamen der Band-Mitglieder zusammen.
