Keys is the eighth studio album by American singer and songwriter Alicia Keys, released through RCA Records on December 10, 2021; her last album released under the label as they parted ways in the summer of 2022.[1][2] It was primarily produced by Keys. It was preceded by the release of two singles: "Lala" featuring Swae Lee and "Best of Me". The album was announced on October 27 and includes two discs (original and unlocked), with two versions of 10 tracks, along with six other tracks.

Keys is a double album. The first part features the more traditional and melodic original songs. The second half of the album features the unlocked versions of the same tracks, where Mike WiLL Made-It sampled the original tracks and gave them stronger beats and several effects and transformations. Some songs exist only either in their original or unlocked version. In the United States, the album debuted at number 41 on the Billboard 200, becoming Keys' first studio album to miss the top five in that country. It received mostly positive reviews, with critics highlighting Keys' production approach in particular, although some were critical of the quality behind the song composition. To support the album, Keys embarked on the Alicia + Keys World Tour.

Conception and composition

The singer's eighth recording project consists of two parts: the first, called Originals, is described as "the classic side of me", while the second, Unlocked, is "a whole other sonic experience".[3][4] The album features the singer as producer and songwriter on all twenty-six tracks, with numerous songwriters and producers participating, including Mike Will Made It, Sia, Raphael Saadiq, Natalie Hemby, and vocal collaborations from Khalid, Lil Wayne, Pusha T, Swae Lee, Brandi Carlile, and Jacob Collier.[5]

After her album Alicia was released in September 2020, following a delay during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Keys started to work on the album by writing alone in the studio as she did with her first albums.[6] Keys, interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, said about the album:[7]

«The pandemic hit; I didn't feel creative at all. I had lost my center and didn't really know how to find peace. [...] So I did get right back in and I knew that I wanted to do this album called Keys. And as I started to create it, I realized that it was a homecoming for me. It's so grounded in songwriting and raw expression. I didn't worry about production. [...] Me and my engineer Ann Mincieli started conversating about this concept about these two worlds. [...] She suggested I connect with [rap producer] Mike Will. And when I connected with Mike Will, it was instant vibes. [...] I like that you can choose your own adventure. You could do that thing where you're kind of A-B-ing it, or you can just ride out to what your energy is».

From the album’s beginning, Keys had a vision to create an alternative and sampled side of the original album.[8] Keys considered enlisting either Hit-Boy, Illangelo or Mike Will Made It to produce the unlocked side of the album.[9] After the originals side was mainly completed, Keys connected with producer Mike Will, and began to work on the unlocked side with him in New York.[8]

Promotion and release

Keys debuted the album's lead single, "Lala" at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards alongside Swae Lee.[10] On October 31, Keys appeared on 1Xtra's R&B Show on BBC Radio 1Xtra in the United Kingdom.[11] In November 2021, Keys appeared on the covers of Marie Claire in the United Kingdom and the United States, and Glamour Germany.[12][13][14] Keys performed of songs from the album at the Mercedes-EQ Concert Experience, held at Mercedes-Benz Manhattan on November 6, 2021.[15] As part of SiriusXM's and Pandora's Small Stage Series, Keys performed songs from the album at Apollo Theater on November 11, 2021.[16] The show was the first of several intimate concert appearances staged by Keys during the unveiling of the new material.[17] On December 1, Keys performed songs from the album at an intimate concert at Superblue art gallery during Art Basel in Miami Beach, Florida.[18] On December 6, Keys appeared on Complex's 360 With Speedy Morman to talk about the album.[19] Keys appeared on Extra on an episode airing on December 8.[20] On December 9, Keys was featured on Drink Champs podcast on Revolt.[21] The album was further promoted by an iHeartRadio album release party featuring an exclusive interview and performances by Keys on December 9.[22]

During its first week of release, Keys appeared on Apple Music's R&B Now Radio to talk about the album with Ebro Darden and performed a concert at Expo 2020 in Dubal, United Arab Emirates on December 10.[23][24] On December 12, Keys appeared on The Kris Fade Show on Virgin Radio Dubai.[25] To talk about the album, Keys appeared on Australian tv-show Sunrise on December 13.[26] On December 14, Keys appeared on the Fat Joe Show, Today and The One Show and performed "Old Memories" on The Voice.[27][28][29][30] Keys was interviewed by Taylor Rooks from the National Basketball Association for 1 on 1 with Alicia Keys on December 15.[31] Keys appeared on The Breakfast Club radio show on December 17.[32] To showcase the album, Keys performed in concert at Maraya in Al-'Ula, Saudi Arabia on February 11, 2022.[33]

Re-release Keys II

On July 14, 2022 Keys unveiled the music video for "Come for Me" featuring Khalid and Lucky Daye, ahead of a re-release of the album titled Keys II during the following month.[34][35][36] In the United States, "Trillions" featuring Brent Faiyaz impacted R&B radio on August 23, 2022.[37] "Come for Me" was released as a single in the United States on February 24, 2023.[38]

Keys was met with generally positive reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, the album received an average score of 65, based on 11 reviews.[40]

Reviewing for Rolling Stone in December 2021, Jon Dolan found the project to consist of "two distinct, easily digestible collections", highlighting Originals as "the more self-assured of the two sets" and its first seven songs a "run of historical turns [that] is quintessential Keys".[48] Dan Cairns of The Times wrote that the album as a whole is a "powerful reminder of just how original an artist she is", adding that "tracks such as Daffodil Mix 2/Daffodils, Skydive, Is It Insane and Nat King Cole point up to Keys' bracingly and often irreverent approach to music-making".[50] Similarly, The Daily Telegraph's Neil McCormick said her production strives toward "epic" ballad styles and evocative trip hop tones,[42] while The New York Times reviewer Jon Pareles applauded the album for how it "invites every listener to think like a producer, hearing the possibilities of timbre, propulsion, weight and context for every sound, while making clear how much those choices matter".[51]

Other reviewers were less receptive. Alexis Petridis, writing for The Guardian, found Keys to be devoid of any major songs and instead reliant on the artist's creativity, which he said "can improve an average song but can't transform one into something extraordinary".[44] AllMusic's Andy Kellman believed that "the songs are more likely to evoke a feeling than have a clear meaning".[41]

Commercial performance

In the United States, the album debuted at number 41 on the Billboard 200 and spent one week on the chart.[52]

Alicia Keys (* 25. Januar 1981 als Alicia Augello Cook in New York City) ist eine US-amerikanische Soul- und R&B-Sängerin, Songwriterin und Schauspielerin. Sie begleitet sich auch selbst am Klavier. Sie hat mehr als 30 Millionen Alben weltweit verkauft[1] und gewann zahlreiche Preise, darunter 15 Grammys. Billboard nannte sie den Top-R&B-Künstler und den fünftbesten Künstler der ersten Dekade des 21. Jahrhunderts.[2] Außerdem kam sie bei den Top 50 der „R&B/Hip-Hop Artists“ der letzten 25 Jahre auf Platz zehn.[3]

Leben

Kindheit und Jugend

Alicia Augello Cook wurde 1981[4] in New York geboren. Sie ist die Tochter der Musical-Sängerin Teresa Augello, auch bekannt als Terria Joseph, die irisch-schottisch-italienischer Abstammung ist. Alicias Cooks Vater, der afroamerikanische Flugbegleiter Craig Cook verließ die Familie, als Alicia zwei Jahre alt war. Sie wuchs nach der Trennung ihrer Eltern bei ihrer Mutter im Viertel Hell’s Kitchen im New Yorker Stadtbezirk Manhattan auf.[5] In ihrer Jugend kam sie unter anderem mit der Musik von Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Lauryn Hill, Prince und Stevie Wonder in Berührung. Im Alter von fünf Jahren nahm sie erstmals Ballett- und Klavierunterricht, womit die Mutter ihre Tochter von der Straße fernhalten wollte. Alicia spielte – zunächst nicht allzu motiviert – hauptsächlich klassische Musik, vor allem Kompositionen von Mozart, Beethoven und ihrem Favoriten Chopin.

Im Alter von 16 Jahren schloss sie ihre High-School-Ausbildung vorzeitig ab. Obwohl sie einen Platz an der Columbia University erhielt, entschied sie sich gegen ein Studium und unterzeichnete stattdessen einen Demovertrag mit Jermaine Dupris So So Def Records, einem Sublabel von Columbia Records. Wegen künstlerischer Differenzen trennte sie sich 1998 von Columbia und folgte Clive Davis, dem Gründer von Arista Records, zu seinem neuen Musiklabel J Records. Schauspielerisch tätig ist Alicia Keys seit einem Kurzauftritt in der Bill Cosby Show 1985.

Privatleben

Seit Herbst 2008 ist sie mit dem Produzenten und Rapper Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) liiert, den sie im Juli 2010 heiratete.[6][7] Im Oktober 2010 wurde ihr erster gemeinsamer Sohn geboren, im Dezember 2014 der zweite.[8]

2001–2002: Songs in A Minor

Nach einzelnen Veröffentlichungen auf den Soundtracks zu Men in Black, Shaft – Noch Fragen? und Dr. Dolittle 2 erschien im Sommer 2001 ihr Debütalbum Songs in A Minor. Die Platte ist eine Mischung aus klassischen Motown-Elementen und zeitgemäßen R&B-Produktionen. Das Album verkaufte sich schon in der ersten Woche 236.000 Mal und debütierte auf Platz eins in den Billboard 200.[9] Allein in den USA wurde Songs in A Minor für 6,2 Millionen abgesetzte Exemplare sechs Mal mit Platin ausgezeichnet.[10][11] Weltweit verkaufte sich das Album über zwölf Millionen Mal. Dank des Albums und des weltweiten Nummer-eins-Hits Fallin’ sowie drei weiterer erfolgreicher Singleauskopplungen avancierte Keys zum erfolgreichsten R&B-Interpreten des Jahres 2001. Bei den Grammy Awards 2002 gewann die Sängerin fünf Grammys, unter anderem in den Kategorien Bester Newcomer, Bestes R&B Album, Song des Jahres und beste R&B-Gesangsdarbietung einer Frau.

2003–2005: The Diary of Alicia Keys und Unplugged

Ende 2003 erschien mit The Diary of Alicia Keys das zweite Album der Sängerin. Die CD wurde von Kanye West, Rich Harrison, Timbaland und Kerry Krucial produziert. Sie verkaufte sich mehr als acht Millionen Mal, und Keys erhielt im Jahr darauf vier weitere Grammys. Im März 2004 hielt sie mit André 3000 und Big Boi die Laudatio für Prince, als dieser in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen wurde, und Ende 2004 veröffentlichte Keys ihr erstes Buch, Tears for Water, ein Songbook mit eigenen Gedichten und Liedtexten. Gleichzeitig gelang ihr mit Usher und dem gemeinsamen Duett My Boo ein weiterer Nummer-eins-Hit.

Im Februar 2005 sang Keys beim 39. Super Bowl America the Beautiful. Im Juli desselben Jahres trat sie anlässlich von Live 8 in Philadelphia auf. Kurz darauf spielte sie ein MTV-Unplugged-Konzert, das im Oktober 2005 sowohl auf CD als auch auf DVD veröffentlicht wurde. Im November trat die auch sozial engagierte Künstlerin bei einer Veranstaltung der Hilfsorganisation Keep a Child Alive auf, die hauptsächlich Familien in Afrika und Asien hilft. Sie spielte mit Bono, der per Video live zugeschaltet war, eine Coverversion des Klassikers Don’t Give Up (Africa) von Kate Bush und Peter Gabriel ein. Alle Einnahmen des Wohltätigkeitsliedes kamen Keep a Child Alive zugute.[12]

2006–2008: Filmdebüt und As I Am

Nach diversen Gastauftritten in den Fernsehserien Charmed – Zauberhafte Hexen und American Dreams war sie 2007 in einer Nebenrolle im Film Smokin’ Aces an der Seite von Ben Affleck und Andy García zu sehen. Nach einem längeren Afrikaaufenthalt bekam sie im Frühjahr 2006 eine weitere Nebenrolle in der Literaturverfilmung von Nanny Diaries. Im September 2007 erschien mit No One die erste Single ihres dritten Studioalbums As I Am. Auch sie platzierte sich in den internationalen Charts weit vorne und kam in der Schweiz auf Platz eins. Auch As I Am stieg auf Platz eins der Schweizer Albumcharts ein und wurde mit Gold ausgezeichnet. Im Februar 2008 wurde Keys in Los Angeles mit zwei Grammys in den Kategorien Best R&B Song und Best Female R&B Vocal Performance ausgezeichnet.

Zusammen mit dem unter anderem als White-Stripes-Frontmann tätigen Musiker Jack White nahm sie 2008 den Titelsong zum 22. James-Bond-Film Ein Quantum Trost auf. Der Song Another Way to Die war als Download erhältlich und erschien sowohl auf dem Filmsoundtrack als auch auf einer erweiterten Version ihres letzten Albums As I Am.

2009–2011: The Element of Freedom

2009 schrieb und produzierte Keys zusammen mit Swizz Beatz den Song Million Dollar Bill für Whitney Houston. Daneben nahm sie Duette mit Alejandro Sanz und Jay-Z auf. Im September 2009 wurde mit Doesn’t Mean Anything die erste Single aus ihrem vierten Studioalbum The Element of Freedom als Download veröffentlicht. In Deutschland erreichte das Album Gold-Status.[13]

Keys und ihr Produzent Kerry Krucial Brothers betreiben die Produktionsgesellschaft Krucialkeys und ein eigenes Studio namens The Oven, in dem sie schon mit vielen weiteren Künstlern wie Nas, Eve, Christina Aguilera, Angie Stone oder Keyshia Cole zusammengearbeitet haben. Im Frühsommer 2011 veröffentlichte Keys eine Jubiläumsversion ihres Debütalbums Songs in A Minor, sie gab aus diesem Anlass zwei Konzerte in London und in New York.[14] 2012 sang sie für Whitney Houston auf deren Trauerfeier den Titel Can You Send Me an Angel.

2012–2015: Girl on Fire

Im November 2012 erschien ihr Album Girl on Fire.[15] Den gleichnamigen Titelsong stellte sie im September 2012 bei den MTV Video Music Awards 2012 vor.[16] Die zweite Singleauskopplung Brand New Me wurde erstmals im November 2012 in den USA im Radio gespielt.[17] Im März 2013 startete die Set the World on Fire Tour.

Im Juni 2013 veröffentlichte Keys gemeinsam mit VH1 ein Storyteller-Livealbum auf CD und DVD.[18] 2014 war sie auf dem Soundtrack zum Film The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro zusammen mit Kendrick Lamar im Titel It’s On Again zu hören.[19] Außerdem spielte sie im von Diplo produzierten Song Living For Love von Madonna aus ihrem Album Rebel Heart von 2015 Klavier.[20]

2016–2022: Here, The Voice, Alicia und Keys

Im Mai 2016 erschien die Single In Common als Auskopplung aus ihrem kommenden sechsten Studioalbum Here.[21] Neben zahlreichen Promoauftritten sang sie im Mai 2016 vor dem Champions-League-Finale in Mailand ein Medley. Zum Weltflüchtlingstag veröffentlichte Keys einen Kurzfilm, in dem sie sich selbst in die Rolle eines Flüchtlings versetzt. Der Film wird von einem weiteren Song des Albums begleitet.[22] Im Oktober 2016 veröffentlichte sie eine weitere Single: Blended Family (What You Do For Love), die in Zusammenarbeit mit A$AP Rocky entstanden ist.[23] Das Album erschien Anfang November und erreichte in den USA Platz 2 der Charts, Here wurde so ihr siebtes Top-Ten-Album in den USA.[24]

Ebenfalls 2016 wurde Keys Jurymitglied in der elften und zwölften Staffel der Castingshow The Voice.[25] Für die vierzehnte Staffel von The Voice kehrte sie als Coach zurück. Im Dezember 2017 wurde bekannt, dass sie als Feature beim Song Like Home für Eminems neuntes Studioalbum Revival zu hören sein wird.[26] Ebenfalls als Feature vertreten ist sie auf Justin Timberlakes fünftem Studioalbum Man of the Woods mit dem Song Morning Light[27] und bei James Bays Us auf seinem zweiten Album Electric Light.[28] Keys moderierte die Grammy Awards 2019 und 2020.

Im September 2020 erschien ihr siebtes Studioalbum, Alicia, aus dem sie zuvor den Song Wasted Energy (feat. Diamond Platnumbz & Kaash Paige) als Single veröffentlicht hatte. Unter dem Titel More Myself hat sie ihre im April 2020 erschienene Autobiografie geschrieben. Sie lancierte im Juni 2021 eine Reihe von Hautpflegeprodukten unter der Bezeichnung Keys Soulcare.[29] Im Dezember 2021 erschien ihr achtes Studioalbum, Keys. Zuvor war der Song Lala (Unlocked) als erste Single des Albums ausgekoppelt worden. Ab Juni 2022 ging sie in Europa und Nordamerika auf Tournee. Im Februar 2022 erschien die Single City of Gods (feat. Fivio Foreign & Kanye West), im August ein Album-Remix mit dem Titel Keys II und im November das erste Weihnachtsalbum von Keys mit dem Titel Santa Baby.
