ATW is the fifth studio album by American psychedelic rock band All Them Witches. The album was released on September 28, 2018, through New West Records.

Background and production

In a July 2018 interview with DEAD PRESS!, All Them Witches announced that they had begun writing their new album that January, and were aiming for a release around the end of September.[1]

ATW has been classified as a psychedelic rock and blues rock album.[2][3][4] The band self-produced the album at a secluded cabin 20 miles (32 km) outside of their hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. ATW was recorded in five days, with All Them Witches recording each song around five times.[5] Mixing was done at MANT Studios in Los Angeles, California, while mastering took place at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville.[6]

Release and promotion

An official music video for the track "Diamond" was released on September 12, 2018. Directed by the band's drummer Robby Staebler, the video was shot on 16 mm film, and was meant to "present the song in a cinematic and contemplative way."[7]

ATW was met with mostly positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, ATW has an average score of 72 based on five reviews.[8]

Critics largely contrasted ATW with its predecessor, 2017's Sleeping Through the War, and other All Them Witches releases. Paul Carr of PopMatters said that the band "stripped away the more expansive, excess" of the previous album "but retained the same sense of experimentation".[4] Elijah Teed of Exclaim! said that the stoner rock of earlier albums "is not as easy to spot on ATW, which favours reflectiveness over rambunctious riffs".[9]

Reviews also highlighted the natural progression of All Them Witches' sound on their new album. Hal Horowitz of American Songwriter said that there are "plenty of bands trying to capture this distressing atmosphere of dread, uncertainty and slowly enveloping darkness, but few do it with the class, subtlety and controlled intensity of All Them Witches".[3] James Christopher Monger of AllMusic praised ATW as "a product of pure instinct, and while it may take some patience to absorb, there isn't a single note that feels coerced".[2]

All Them Witches ist eine US-amerikanische neo-psychedelische Blues-Rockband aus Nashville (Tennessee), die 2012 gegründet wurde. Die Musik zeigt Einflüsse aus den 1960er und 1970er Jahren, insbesondere von Bands wie Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin und Mountain.

Bandgeschichte

Die Band besteht aus dem Sänger und Multiinstrumentalisten Charles Michael Parks Jr. und dem Gitarristen Ben McLeod sowie dem Schlagzeuger Robby Staebler. Sie wurde am 6. Januar 2012 gegründet. Zuvor war der Schlagzeuger Robby Staebler von Portland nach Nashville gezogen, um Musiker für eine Bandgründung zu suchen. Dabei rekrutierte er den Gitarristen Ben McLeod nach einem Treffen in einer Bar. Später stießen Charles Michael Parks Jr. als Frontmann und Bassist sowie Allan Van Cleave als Keyboardspieler hinzu.

2012 veröffentlichte All Them Witches ihre erste selbstbetitelte EP mit vier Titeln. Ebenfalls 2012 erschien ihr Debütalbum Our Mother Electricity beim deutschen Independent-Label Elektrohasch Records, das damit erstmals eine amerikanische Band unter Vertrag nahm. Das zweite Studioalbum von 2013 unter dem Titel Lightning at the Door wurde im Internet veröffentlicht und vertrieben. 2015 veröffentlichte die Band das Livealbum At the Garage. 2015 ging die Band bei New West Records unter Vertrag. In dem Jahr nahm sie ihr drittes Studioalbum Dying Surfer Meets His Maker in sechs Tagen in einer abgelegenen Berghütte mit Blick auf Pigeon Forge in Tennessee auf.

Sleeping Through the War erschien 2017 als viertes Studioalbum der Band. 2018 verließ der Keyboardspieler Allan Van Cleave die Band. Er wurde von Jonathan Draper ersetzt. Nach ihrem Album ATW von 2018 machte die Band ohne Jonathan Draper als Trio weiter. 2020 veröffentlichte die Band Nothing as the Ideal als sechstes Studioalbum, das in den Abbey Road Studios in London aufgenommen wurde.

Bandname

Der Bandname beruht auf dem fiktiven Buch „All of Them Witches“ (deutsch: Allesamt Hexen), das eine zentrale Rolle im Horrorfilm Rosemaries Baby von 1968 spielt. Dort wird es als gebundenes Buch mit einem schwarzen Umschlag gezeigt, das auf der Vorderseite mit dem Titel in goldenen Buchstaben versehen ist. Das mit bildlichen Illustrationen versehene Buch wird im Film als ein Werk über Hexerei dargestellt, aus dem die Hauptdarstellerin Rosemarie entscheidende Informationen über einen Satanisten in ihrer näheren Umgebung erlangt.[1]
