A Different Kind of Human (Step 2) is the second studio album by Norwegian singer-songwriter and record producer Aurora. It was released on 7 June 2019 by Decca and Glassnote Records.[1][2][3] It succeeds the album's first and previous chapter Infections of a Different Kind (Step 1), which was released in September 2018. Aurora collaborated with producers including Magnus Skylstad, MyRiot, Askjell Solstrand, Odd Martin, Mark Ralph, Toby Gad, and Kill Dave during its recording. It has been categorised to be a pop, art pop, and electropop concept album.

Background and production

"My first album was a lot about looking inwards and working with your own demons, becoming a warrior for yourself. All in all, it's about becoming a warrior for the people that can't be a warrior for themselves yet, so that's why it's important that this album felt like it was sent to a different kind of human. It has this mix of the ancient and futuristic because we are in a very interesting time now, as humans; we are trying to learn how to live with the world, the technology, with us, and trying to balance it all in harmony."

On the same day of the release of Infections of a Different Kind (Step 1), Aurora confirmed in an interview with NME that Step 2 would be released either in 2019 or 2020.[5] Months later, Aurora posted a photo which seems to be an alien invasion with a text that said "Something is coming in 2019" in Morse code, which hinted that Step 2 would be set to be released in 2019.[6]

On 24 December 2018, Aurora announced in an interview for Bergens Tidende that Step 2 is coming faster than expected, most likely because she and Magnus Skylstad had been in the studio for a very long time.[7] A Different Kind of Human (Step 2) was recorded in November 2018 in a "tiny room", in which Aurora and Skylstad did not sleep until the album completion.[8][9]

Music and lyrics

Musically, A Different Kind of Human (Step 2) combines pop,[10] art pop,[11] and electropop,[12] while drawing influences from Native American, African, Norwegian and Japanese folk music.[4] The record has been described to be a concept album that tackles themes of ecological crisis that "aim at society's self-centred capitalistic apathy."[13]

Release and promotion

On 18 February 2019, Aurora announced that the title would not be under the assumed title of Infections of a Different Kind (Step 2), and it would have a different name. "It's kind of what I would hope for the music to do to us", Aurora said about Step 2's title.[14] The singer revealed that she was planning a sequel, known as Step 3, expected to be released after her third studio album The Gods We Can Touch (2022).[citation needed]

Singles

The album's first single, "Animal", was released on 24 January 2019 alongside a music video released the same day. At the end of March, "The Seed" was confirmed to be the second single from the project.[15] Following the announcement, the album title and tracklist were revealed on 4 April 2019. On 10 May 2019, the song "The River" was released as the album's third single. It was followed by the promotional single "A Different Kind of Human", released on 31 May 2019. The singles "Apple Tree" and "Daydreamer" were released on 26 September 2019 and 1 November 2019, respectively.

At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews and ratings from mainstream publications, A Different Kind of Human (Step 2) received an average score of 77, based on 7 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[17]

AllMusic editor Marcy Donelson wrote that "while uneven, it's an album that sticks, both for its theatrical melodies and uncommon benevolence."[18] Michael Cragg of The Guardian suggested that the album "would have benefited from its predecessor's [Infections of a Different Kind (Step 1)] brevity" and added that it "deserves wider attention."[12] NME reviewer Andrew Trendell lauded the album's production, and message but commented that "Aurora's idiosyncrasies — which mostly set this album apart — sometimes also weigh it down."[23] Clash's Malvika Padin highlighted that "Aurora consistently plays to her lyrical strength, as meaningful words [...] make a home within the listeners psyche."[10]

Aurora (* 15. Juni 1996 in Stavanger als Aurora Aksnes[1]) ist eine norwegische Sängerin, Tänzerin, Songwriterin und Musikproduzentin.

Leben

Herkunft

Aksnes kam 1996 in Stavanger zur Welt und lebte zunächst in der Kommune Sandnes. Im Alter von drei Jahren zog sie mit ihrer Familie nach Os im Raum Bergen.[2] Mit sechs Jahren begann sie das Klavierspiel zu erlernen. Später fing sie damit an, eigene Lieder zu schreiben. Ende 2012 wurde ohne ihr Wissen ihr Lied Puppet auf YouTube veröffentlicht. Mit dem Lied wurde Aksnes schließlich vom norwegischen Radiosender NRK P3 als Newcomerin der Woche (Ukas urørt) geführt.[1][3]

Karrierebeginn und Durchbruch

Ihre Debütsingle ist das im März 2014 erschienene Lied Awakening. Im Februar 2014 trat sie im Alter von 17 Jahren mit zu diesem Zeitpunkt nur einer veröffentlichten Single beim Musikfestival by:Larm auf. Dort wurde sie als „gutes weibliches Vorbild“ mit einem Preisgeld von 50.000 Kronen ausgezeichnet. Von der norwegischen Zeitung Dagbladet wurde sie mit ihrem Auftritt als „Gewinnerin“ des Festivals betitelt. Im selben Jahr trat sie auch beim Øyafestivalen auf. Sie erhielt im Jahr 2014 zudem Verträge bei Petroleum Records für Norwegen, bei Glassnote Records für die USA und international beim britischen Musiklabel Decca Records.[4][3] Beim Musikpreis P3 Gull wurde Aksnes im Jahr 2014 in der Newcomer-Kategorie nominiert.[5]

Bekannt wurde Aurora Aksnes im Alter von 18 Jahren durch ihr Lied Running with the Wolves aus ihrer gleichnamigen Debüt-EP, die im Mai 2015 veröffentlicht wurde. Das Lied wurde in Deutschland für Vodafone-Werbungen genutzt und konnte in die deutschen Singlecharts einsteigen.[1][6] Das Lied fand zudem als Titellied der britischen Serie Wolfblood – Verwandlung bei Vollmond Verwendung.[7] Von der US-amerikanischen Sängerin und Songschreiberin Katy Perry wurde sie für Runaway als vielversprechendes Nachwuchstalent gelobt.[8] Aksnes’ Lied Conqueror wurde im Videospiel FIFA 16 und der Song Under Stars im Abspann von Mass Effect: Andromeda verwendet.

Aksnes ist auch als Songwriterin für andere Künstler tätig. So findet sich beispielsweise mit In the Light ein Lied aus ihrer Feder auf dem 2015 veröffentlichten Album Crystal Sky der deutschen Sängerin Lena Meyer-Landrut. Im November 2015 hatte sie einen musikalischen Auftritt in der deutschen Late-Night-Show Inas Nacht. Im gleichen Jahr trat sie beim Friedensnobelpreiskonzert auf.[9] Für einen Werbespot für die britische Kaufhauskette John Lewis nahm sie im Jahr 2015 eine Coverversion des Oasis-Songs Half the World Away auf.[10][7] Damit schaffte sie es auf Platz elf der britischen Charts. Beim norwegischen Musikpreis Spellemannprisen 2015 gewann sie in der Newcomer-Kategorie. Sie wurde zudem für Running With the Wolves in der Kategorie „Lied des Jahres“ nominiert.[11]

Im März 2016 veröffentlichte Aksnes ihr Debütalbum All My Demons Greeting Me As a Friend. Mit diesem platzierte sie sich in Norwegen an der Spitze der Albumcharts. In Deutschland und Großbritannien erreichte sie jeweils einen Platz in den Top 30. Mehrere der Lieder ihres Debütalbums schrieb sie gemeinsam mit Odd Martin Skålnes und Magnus Skylstad.[1] Das Album wurde beim Spellemannprisen 2016 als „Album des Jahres“ nominiert. Aksnes selbst gewann für das Album in der Popsolisten-Kategorie. Zudem wurde das Musikvideo zu ihrem Lied I Went Too Far als Musikvideo des Jahres ausgezeichnet.[11]

Weitere Karriere

In den Jahren 2018 und 2019 brachte Aksnes ein zweiteiliges Album heraus. Der erste Teil war das in EP-Form erschienene Infections of a Different Kind – Step 1, das im September 2018 veröffentlicht wurde. Im Juni 2019 folgte mit A Different Kind of Human – Step 2 der zweite Teil.[1] Zuvor hatte sie daraus bereits unter anderem die Singles Animal und The Seed veröffentlicht. Für die Produktion der brasilianischen Telenovela Deus Salve o Rei (deutsch Gott schütze den König) sang sie als Titelmelodie den traditionellen Song Scarborough Fair.

Für die Neuverfilmung von Dumbo aus dem Jahr 2019 sang sie Baby Mine.[12] Im November 2019 war Aurora für das Lied Wo noch niemand war des Films Die Eiskönigin II als Hintergrundsängerin tätig. Am 9. Februar 2020 spielten Menzel und Aurora das Lied während der 92. Oscar-Verleihung zusammen mit neun der internationalen Sänger des Songs, die in neun verschiedenen Sprachen sangen. Im Mai 2020 startete Aksnes mit der Single Exist for Love den Auftakt des nächsten Albums. Anfang September 2020 veröffentlichte Aksnes den Song The Secret Garden zur Neuverfilmung Der geheime Garten. Im Oktober 2020 nahm Aurora Aksnes eine Coverversion Thank U (Original von Alanis Morissette) auf. Ende 2020 veröffentlichte sie den Titelsong Stjernestøv zur gleichnamigen, beim norwegischen Rundfunk Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK) ausgestrahlten Weihnachtsserie.[13]

Am 7. Februar 2021 feierte das Lied Runaway seinen sechsten Geburtstag. Aufgrund des Ehrentages stellte Aksnes fünf weitere EPs aus ihren Songs zusammen. Im Frühjahr 2021 war das bereits 2015 veröffentlichte Lied Runaway auf Plattformen wie TikTok und Instagram erfolgreich. Dort wurde es als Hintergrundmusik für einen Filter benutzt.[14] Durch diesen viralen Trend landete das Lied in den Spotify-Charts[15] und erreichte allein schon auf YouTube seit dem Anfang 2021 475 Millionen Aufrufe.[16]

Im Juli 2021 veröffentlichte Aurora Aksnes die zweite Single Cure For Me ihres anstehenden Albums. Das Lied gilt als Kritik an Konversionstherapien.[17][18] Im Oktober 2021 brachte Aksnes die dritte Single Giving in to the Love aus heraus. Das Album The Gods We Can Touch wurde schließlich im Januar 2022 veröffentlicht. Im selben Monat brachten Aurora und Pomme zusammen Everything Matters heraus, wobei Pomme den französischen Teil des Liedes schrieb und einsang.[19] Im November 2022 gewann sie beim norwegischen Musikpreis P3 Gull den P3-Preis.[20] Für die Live-Action Serie One Piece, die seit dem 31. August 2023 auf Netflix läuft wurde das Lied My Sails Are Set von Sonya Belousova und Giona Ostinelli komponiert, indem Aurora den Gesang übernahm.
