Un Verano Sin Ti (Spanish pronunciation: [um beˈɾano sin ˈti]; transl. A Summer Without You) is the fourth solo studio album, and fifth overall, by Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny.[5] It was released on May 6, 2022, by Rimas Entertainment following the release of his previous record El Último Tour Del Mundo (2020). Comprising twenty-three tracks, the album is primarily a reggaeton, cumbia, and indie pop record, and contains guest appearances from Chencho Corleone, Jhayco, Tony Dize, Rauw Alejandro, Bomba Estéreo, the Marías and Buscabulla.[6]

A critical and commercial success, Un Verano Sin Ti debuted atop the US Billboard 200, marking Bad Bunny's second number-one album and the second all-Spanish language album to top the chart.[7] It spent 13 weeks atop the chart and topped the Billboard 200 Year-End Chart as the best-performing album of the year, the first Spanish language album to do so. It was also the first album by a Latin artist to reach 10 billion streams on Spotify. At the 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards, Un Verano Sin Ti won Best Urban Music Album,[8] while at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, it became the first Spanish-language album to earn a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.[9] Un Verano Sin Ti was the world's best-performing album of 2022 according to IFPI, making Bad Bunny the first Latino to have won a IFPI Global Chart Award.[10]

Background

Bad Bunny first teased Un Verano Sin Ti on January 24, 2022, when he posted a teaser announcing his upcoming 2022 stadium tour World's Hottest Tour: "now yes, 2022 has started".[11] He called the album "a record to play in the summer, on the beach, as a playlist".[12] The music video for "Moscow Mule" was filmed in Miami, Florida and Puerto Rico.[13][14]

Composition

Un Verano Sin Ti is primarily a reggaeton, cumbia, and indie pop record, driven by musical styles hailing from the Caribbean, such as reggae, bomba, plena, calypso, soca, dembow, mambo, merengue, and bachata. The album also contains elements of a cappella, acoustic, afrobeats, alternative rock, ambient, ballad, bossa nova, chillwave, dancehall, dance-pop, disco, electronic, hip-hop, house, jazz, lambada, lo-fi, pop, psychedelia, R&B, rock, rocksteady, samba, sandungueo, ska, soul, surf, synth-pop, synthwave, techno, and trap.[50]

Artwork

The artwork for Un Verano Sin Ti features a sad one-eyed heart in front of a vibrant beach setting with the light blue ocean, beaming sunset, breezy palm trees, happy dolphins, and pink flowers that was designed by the L.A.-based artist and graphic designer Adrian Hernandez, professionally known as Ugly Primo, with whom Bad Bunny has been in a friendship with since 2018. Although designed by Hernandez himself, Bad Bunny claims that the idea of the album cover was all his. Ideas for the album cover were conceived as early as the summer of 2021 when Bad Bunny had reached out to Hernandez with the idea of the cover and how he wanted it to look like. Hernandez explains even further that he made about seven versions, in different styles and aesthetics, based on a drawing that Bad Bunny gave him, and a little after six months, the cover art of Un Verano Sin Ti was finally finished and unveiled to the public on May 4, 2022, just two days before the official release of the album.[51][52]

Un Verano Sin Ti was met with critical acclaim. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, the album received an average score of 85, based on seven reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[53]

David Crone of AllMusic writes, "Un Verano is not only a seasonal statement-piece but a testament to Benito's singular songwriting -- across genres, generations, and even languages, he works to produce enduring landmarks that trace universal joys, sorrows, and passions."[54] Lucas Villa of Consequence praised the album's musical versatility, highlighting that "Side B is the more adventurous half of the album, pushing Bad Bunny's sound into new places with collaborations with alternative acts. ... With the sun-kissed Un Verano Sin Ti, Bad Bunny continues to proudly give pop music some much-needed flavor, swagger, and sounds by way of the Caribbean."[56] Honored with its "Best New Music" tag, Jennifer Mota of Pitchfork echoes Villa's remarks, writing that the album is a "cohesively packaged voyage through the various sounds synonymous with the Caribbean region—reggaetón, reggae, bomba, Dominican dembow, Dominican mambo, and bachata, among others.[16]

Julyssa Lopez of Rolling Stone praised the album, but noted that it "does fall into some of the problems of modern reggaeton. Many have pointed out that though Bad Bunny draws inspiration from the Dominican Republic in particular, no Dominicans appear in the actual features. And the length of the album produces some lulls and selections that are pretty mid: Unsurprisingly, the most mainstream reggaeton songs on here land among the least interesting."[21]

Commercial performance

Un Verano Sin Ti debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 274,000 album-equivalent units. It is Bad Bunny's second number-one album and the second all-Spanish language album to top the Billboard 200. The album also achieved the biggest streaming week for a Latin album ever, accumulating 356.66 million official streams in the United States, the most for any album since Drake's Certified Lover Boy (2021), and was the most-streamed album on Spotify in 2022 by that point.[70] It spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks atop the chart, becoming the album with the most weeks at No. 1 in 2022 and the ninth album overall to spend more than 10 weeks on top of the chart since 2000. Un Verano Sin Ti is also the first album to spend its first six months on the chart in the top two, since the Billboard 200 began publishing in 1956. It topped the 2022 Billboard 200 Year-End Chart, the first all-Spanish album to do so. In addition, it also placed at No. 1 on the year-end Independent Albums, Top Latin Albums and Latin Rhythm Albums charts.[71][72]

Luminate reported 3.398 million album equivalent-units by 2022, including 70,000 physical sales (CDs) and digital download.[73][74]

The album reached number one on the Spanish Albums Chart and has received a five-times platinum certification for having moved 200,000 units in the country.[75] Un Verano Sin Ti became Bad Bunny's first album to reach the top 10 on the music charts of Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.[76][77]

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (* 10. März 1994 in Vega Baja), bekannt unter seinem Künstlernamen Bad Bunny, ist ein aus Puerto Rico stammender Latin-Rap- und Reggaeton-Sänger.[1]

Leben und Karriere

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio wurde am 10. März 1994 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, als Sohn einer Lehrerin und eines Truckers geboren.[2] Als er fünf Jahre alt war, hatte er den Traum, Sänger zu werden.[3] Später studierte er an der Universität von Puerto Rico in Arecibo audiovisuelle Kommunikation und arbeitete nebenbei in einem Supermarkt als Einpacker.[4] Erste musikalische Aufnahmen veröffentlicht er mit 19 Jahren auf der Webseite SoundCloud. Mit der Single „Diles“ gelang ihm sein Durchbruch. Er wurde von DJ Luian entdeckt, erreichte so weitere Künstler in der Szene und wurde zu einem Vorreiter in der lateinamerikanischen Trap-Szene.[5][6]

Im Sommer 2017 unterzeichnete Bad Bunny einen Plattenvertrag mit dem Cardenas Marketing Network (CMD) und hatte dafür mehrere Auftritte in lateinamerikanischen Ländern.[7] Ab November 2017 veranstaltete Bad Bunny die erste spanischsprachige Show von Beats 1, Trap Kingz.[8] Mit dem Song „I Like It“, den er zusammen mit Cardi B produzierte, landete er auf Platz 1 der Billboard Hot 100 in den Vereinigten Staaten.[9]

Am 21. Juli 2018 hatte Bad Bunny eine fünfminütige Performance beim Tomorrowland-Festival in Belgien im Rahmen des von DJ Alesso vorgestellten Sets, das ihn zum Auftritt einlud.[10]

Er erhielt mehrere Top-Ten-Einträge in den Hot Latin Songs Charts und arbeitete mit vielen bekannten Musikern zusammen. Er wurde über 46,5 Millionen Mal auf YouTube abonniert[11] und erreichte in den globalen Jahrescharts der meistgestreamten Künstler auf Spotify 2020, 2021 und 2022 den ersten Platz.[12]

Seit Anfang 2021 hat er Gastauftritte an der Seite von Damian Priest bei der Wrestling Promotion World Wrestling Entertainment. Dort konnte er am 15. Februar den Titel des WWE 24/7 Championship erkämpfen. Er gab den Titel in der RAW Ausgabe vom 17.03. aber im Tausch gegen WWE Stone Cold Steve Austin Merchandise wieder an R-Truth. Bei WrestleMania 37 gewann er zusammen mit Priest ein Tag-Team-Match gegen The Miz und John Morrison. Im Zuge des Pay-per-View „Backlash 2023“ in Puerto Rico besiegte er Damian Priest in einem San Juan Street Fight-Match.

2021 machte er sein Debüt als Schauspieler und übernahm in der dritten Staffel der Netflix-Serie Narcos: Mexico eine Nebenrolle. Ein während der COVID-19-Pandemie von ihm nach zweijähriger Konzertpause am 10. Dezember 2021 in San Juan auf Puerto Rico gegebenes Konzert[13] führte zur Erkrankung von 2000 der 60.000 Zuschauer an COVID-19.[14] 2022 übernahm er eine Rolle im Kinofilm Bullet Train.

Im November 2022 wurde das Album Un verano sin ti durch die amerikanische Recording Academy in der Kategorie Album of the Year sowie für das Best Música Urbana Album nominiert. Eine weitere Nominierung bekam er für die Kategorie Best Pop Solo Performance für den Song Moscow Mule.[15]

Mit seinen Auftritten generierte Bad Bunny 2022 mehr als 435 Millionen Dollar und damit die größte Summe, die im Jahr 2022 ein Künstler mit Tickets einnehmen konnte. Im April 2023 wird er als Headliner beim Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, dem wichtigsten Live-Event der Welt, auftreten.

Privates

Ocasio lernte 2017 die Schmuckdesignerin Gabriela Berlingeri in einem Restaurant kennen, als er dort mit seiner Familie aß, und die beiden begannen bald darauf miteinander auszugehen.[16] Berlingeri war die erste Latina, die das Cover des Rolling Stone fotografierte, als sie Ocasio für das Cover des Magazins im Mai 2020 fotografierte.[17] In einem Interview mit der Los Angeles Times aus dem Jahr 2020 erklärte Bad Bunny, er betrachte Sexualität als fließend. Er sagte: „Am Ende des Tages weiß ich nicht, ob ich in 20 Jahren einen Mann mögen werde. Man weiß nie im Leben. Aber im Moment bin ich heterosexuell und mag Frauen.“[18]

Im November 2022 wurde sein Vermögen auf 18 Millionen Dollar[19] geschätzt.

Stil

Bad Bunny ist hauptsächlich ein Latin-Trap-Künstler. Wie in einem Rolling-Stone-Artikel beschrieben wird, singt und rappt Bad Bunny mit einem unterhaltenden tiefen und breiartigen Ton, der zähflüssige Melodien und einen Rapper-Tonfall verwendet.[20]
