Chronicles of a Diamond is the second studio album by American band Black Pumas, released on October 27, 2023, through ATO Records.[1] It was produced by group member Adrian Quesada, co-produced by fellow member Eric Burton and John Congleton, and mixed by Shawn Everett. The album was preceded by the lead single "More Than a Love Song".[2][3]
Background
On August 24, 2023, Black Pumas announced the release of Chronicles of a Diamond, along with the first single More Than a Love Song.[4]
Eric Burton acknowledged that while the band were "under pressure" with their second album, it was still "a fun process and very cathartic as well" and "feels more like a second debut". With Chronicles of a Diamond, Burton stated that he "had a lot more to do with the creation of the music outside of lyrics and melody" than the band's debut.[5]
Singles
The first single from the album, More Than a Love Song, featured at number 1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay.[6] Consequence of Sound described the single as a song "built on a jangly groove and fleshed out with some orchestral strings, bold electric guitar riffs, and a gospel choir."[7]

Chronicles of a Diamond received a score of 76 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on ten critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception.[8] Mojo commented that "the production ideas and songs, however smart, won't change the world; they will, however, prompt large swathes to sing along".[13] Clash's Emma Harrison called it a "cross-cultural heavenly palette of starry-eyed soul, psychedelic rock, jazz funk and symphonic pop" as well as "the most expansive expression yet of Black Pumas' frenetic creativity and limitless vision to date".[9]
Thomas Smith of NME described it as "a more realised offering to the world and exceeds their debut album" and observed that "you can't help but hear Burton's confidence growing across the album's running time, his potential still untapped and with room to grow".[14] Uncut felt that "while the material is frequently just serviceable, the arrangements are inspired thanks to the virtuosic interplay of JaRon Marshall's gilded piano, Brendan Bond's percolating basslines and Quesada's sizzling solos".[16] Glide Magazine's Ryan Dillon opined that it is "bursting with colorful experimentation and pure musicianship that showcases a diversity that wasn't present on their debut".[17]

Black Pumas sind eine amerikanische Band aus Austin, Texas. Sie besteht aus dem Sänger Eric Burton und dem Gitarristen und Produzenten Adrian Quesada und spielt eine Mischung aus Soul- und Funk-Stücken mit Latin-Einflüssen. Sie wurde als „Best New Artist“ für einen Grammy bei den Grammy Awards 2020 nominiert.
Bandgeschichte
Das Duo Black Pumas wurde 2017 durch den Sänger Eric Burton und den Gitarristen Adrian Quesada gegründet. Quesada war Mitglied der Latin-Band Grupo Fantasma, mit der er mit dem Album Sonidos Gold für den Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album nominiert wurde und diesen für das 2010 erschienene Album El Existential auch gewann. Zudem war Quesada Teil der ebenfalls in Austin gegründeten Band Brownout und arbeitete mit zahlreichen Solisten zusammen, darunter etwa Prince oder Daniel Johnston.[1] Eric Burton war vor der Gründung der Black Pumas vor allem als Straßensänger unterwegs und wurde Quesada durch einen gemeinsamen Freund vorgestellt, als dieser 2017 einen Sänger für ein neues Projekt suchte.[1]
Die Black Pumas veröffentlichten ihr erstes Album mit dem Titel Black Pumas am 21. Juni 2019 bei ATO Records.[1][2][3] Sie spielten 2019 beim South by Southwest und gewannen eine Trophäe als beste neue Band bei den Austin Music Awards 2019. Im November 2019 wurden sie als „Best New Artist“ für einen Grammy bei den Grammy Awards 2020 nominiert.[1][2] Die Deluxe Edition ihres Debütalbums war 2021 für den „Grammy Award for Album of the Year“ nominiert. Der Song Colors zeitgleich für den „Grammy Award for Record of the Year“ und „Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance“. 2022 folgten Nominierungen in den Kategorien „Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance“ (für das Lieg Know You Better (Live from Capitol Studio A)) und „Grammy Award for Best Rock Album“ (für das Livealbum Capitol Cuts – Live from Studio A).
Das zweite Studioalbum Chronicles of a Diamond wurde, zusammen mit der Single More Than a Love Song, im August 2023 angekündigt und wurde am 27. Oktober 2023 veröffentlicht.[4]
