Bob Weir (* 16. Oktober 1947 in San Francisco, Kalifornien) ist ein US-amerikanischer Sänger und Gitarrist, bekannt als Gründungsmitglied der Rockband Grateful Dead.

Biografie

Weir wuchs bei Adoptiveltern in Atherton in Kalifornien auf. Im Alter von 13 Jahren fing er an, Gitarre zu spielen. Im Jahr 1963 lernte er Jerry García kennen. Er war anschließend Mitglied der Band The Warlocks, aus der später die Grateful Dead hervorgingen, deren ständiges Mitglied er bis zu ihrer Auflösung 1995 nach dem Tode Jerry Garcías war. Neben dem Songschreiber-Duo Jerry García/Robert Hunter (Musik/Text) trug Weir mit dem Texter John Barlow wesentlich zum Repertoire der Grateful Dead bei. Wie Garcia übernahm er den Gesang seiner eigenen Lieder. Als Rhythmusgitarrist stand er gegenüber García, der die allermeisten Gitarrensoli spielte, eher im Hintergrund.

Zwischen 1974 und 1977 war er außerdem Mitglied von Kingfish.

Weir veröffentlichte eigene Alben unter seinem Namen (Ace, 1972), als Bobby & the Midnites und seit 1995 mit seiner eigenen Band Ratdog. Außerdem beteiligte er sich an Auftritten mit anderen früheren Grateful-Dead-Mitgliedern unter den Namen The Other Ones und The Dead. Er gründete 2009 zusammen mit dem Grateful-Dead-Bassisten Phil Lesh die Band Furthur.[1] 2022 erschienen zwei neue Alben: Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros: Live In Colorado. Vol. 1 + 2.[2][3]

Weir wurde 1994 als Mitglied der Grateful Dead in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.[4] Die Rennfahrerin Leilani Münter ist seine Schwägerin.

Auszeichnungen

Im April 2016 wurde Weir im Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology im Artepitheton der fossilen Otterart Lontra weiri aus dem Pliozän Nordamerikas gewürdigt.[5]

Wolf Bros – also known as Bob Weir & Wolf Bros or Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros – is a rock band led by former Grateful Dead guitarist and singer Bob Weir. The band plays some Grateful Dead songs along with other roots rock music.

History

Wolf Bros formed in 2018 as a trio, with Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, Don Was on double bass, and Jay Lane on drums. Billed as Bob Weir & Wolf Bros, they toured the U.S. with 19 concerts in the fall of that year.[1][2][3] In the spring of 2019 they played another concert tour with 20 more shows.[4] In the spring of 2020 the band began a 22-date tour, which was cancelled in the middle because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[5][6]

On New Year's Eve 2020 Bob Weir & Wolf Bros, with Jeff Chimenti on keyboards and Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar, livestreamed a concert from TRI Studios. The band played several more shows at TRI Studios in the spring of 2021, with an expanded lineup including Chimenti, Leisz, and a horn and string section called the Wolfpack, with Brian Switzer on trumpet, Adam Theis on tenor trombone, Sheldon Brown on tenor and alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute and bass flute, Mads Tolling on violin, and Alex Kelly on cello.[7][8]

In June 2021 the band, now billed as Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, performed four concerts in Colorado,[9] and in July they played one show in California.[10]

On February 18, 2022, the band released an album of recordings from the June 2021 concerts called Live in Colorado, in CD, vinyl, and digital formats.[11][12][13]

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, accompanied by the Wolfpack, played a spring 2022 concert tour with a lineup including Barry Sless on pedal steel guitar.[14][15]

The band played a fall 2022 concert tour of 21 shows in 13 cities, with the quartet again accompanied by Barry Sless and the Wolfpack.[16]

A second album of recordings from the June 2021 concerts, Live in Colorado Vol. 2, was released on October 7, 2022.[17][18][19]

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, along with Barry Sless and the Wolfpack, toured the U.S. in February and March 2023.[20]
