Just Like That... is the eighteenth studio album by American singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bonnie Raitt. Released on April 22, 2022,[8] it is her first studio album since 2016's Dig In Deep. The album was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Americana Album in 2023.[9] Its title track won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Best American Roots Song and lead single "Made Up Mind" won Best Americana Performance.

Background

The album, recorded and mixed by Ryan Freeland,[10] is her third for her own Redwing Records. It is her 11th recording with her longtime drummer Ricky Fataar and 12th with longtime bassist James "Hutch" Hutchinson. "Made Up Mind" was released as a single on February 25, 2022, reaching number 17 on the US Billboard Adult album alternative (AAA) chart. "Made Up Mind" was followed by the singles "Something's Got a Hold of My Heart"[11] and "Livin' for the Ones"[12] prior to the album's release.

Release and reception

Upon its release, Just Like That... made it to number one on six Billboard charts, and number 44 on the Billboard 200.

On AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote, "The blend of rock, blues, soul, reggae, folk, and pop that fuels Just Like That – her 18th album and first since 2016's Dig In Deep – is deeply familiar, evoking memories of her classic 1970s LPs while sounding of a piece with such relaxed latter-day records as Slipstream... It all adds up to an album that slowly works its way into the subconscious, sounding deeper and richer with each successive play."[13]

Bonnie Raitt (* 8. November 1949 in Burbank, Kalifornien) ist eine US-amerikanische Blues- und Country-Sängerin und Gitarristin.

Leben

Die Tochter des Broadway-Stars John Raitt arbeitete in den 1970ern mit Warren Zevon, Steve Ripley und Little Feat zusammen. Auch nach Jahren in der Musikszene war ihr der kommerzielle Erfolg versagt geblieben. Durch Alkohol und andere Drogen beeinträchtigt, verlor sie 1983 ihren Plattenvertrag.

1987 gelang ihr ein Comeback, als sie zusammen mit K. D. Lang und Jennifer Warnes den Backgroundchor bei Roy Orbisons Fernsehshow bildete, die große Beachtung fand und gute Kritiken erhielt. Zudem arbeitete Raitt mit Prince zusammen, der 1987 vier Songs für sie komponierte, diese aber nicht veröffentlichte.[1] Das zehnte, 1989 veröffentlichte Album Nick of Time eroberte Platz 1 der US-Charts, verhalf ihr zu drei Grammys und verkaufte sich allein in den USA fünf Millionen Mal. Im gleichen Jahr spielte sie auf Einladung von John Lee Hooker auf dessen Comeback-Album The Healer. Für ihr Duett I’m in the Mood erhielten sie einen Grammy. Raitts Nachfolgealbum Luck of the Draw war mit acht Millionen verkaufter CDs in den USA noch erfolgreicher. Auf ihrem Live-Album Road Tested sind unter anderem Duette mit Bryan Adams und Jackson Browne zu hören. 2004 wurde sie von Ray Charles eingeladen, mit ihm auf dessen Album Genius Loves Company Do I Ever Cross Your Mind? zu singen.

Bonnie Raitt wurde im Jahr 2000 in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.[2] 2010 wurde ihr Lebenswerk durch die Aufnahme in die Blues Hall of Fame der Blues Foundation gewürdigt.[3] Der Rolling Stone listete sie auf Rang 50 der 100 besten Sänger aller Zeiten sowie auf Rang 89 der 100 besten Gitarristen aller Zeiten.[4][5]

Raitts Hauptgitarre auf Tour ist eine unlackierte Fender Stratocaster, die sie 1969 kaufte und der sie entsprechend ihrer Farbe den Spitznamen „Brownie“ gab. Sie wurde 1996 zur Grundlage für ein Signature-Modell. Raitt war die erste Musikerin, die von Fender eine Signaturlinie erhielt.[6]
