Be is the fifth Korean-language and ninth overall studio album by South Korean boy band BTS. It was released on November 20, 2020, through Big Hit Entertainment, nine months after its predecessor, Map of the Soul: 7 (2020). Created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Be was inspired by BTS' perspective of life during the pandemic. The record sees the band members contributing to various aspects of album-making process including songwriting, development, production, and visual design.

Be is primarily a pop record, encompassing hip hop, EDM, and disco genres with elements of synth-pop, funk, and R&B. Described by BTS as "a letter of hope", the lyrics are about comfort, loneliness, anxiety, sadness, hope, connection, and joy. Critics hailed the album's pop sound and the eclectic experimentation of musical styles, with many praising its authenticity and simplicity. A few others expressed mixed feelings and found it unadventurous. The album was preceded by the standalone single "Dynamite", which marked BTS' first number-one song on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was followed by the lead single of Be, "Life Goes On", which also debuted atop the Hot 100, becoming BTS' third consecutive chart-topper in the United States.

The album was BTS' fifth to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making BTS the fastest group to earn five chart-topping albums in the United States since the Beatles. Elsewhere, the album topped charts in Canada, Denmark, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, the Republic of Ireland, South Korea, and Wallonia; and peaked within the top 10 of 14 other territories. The album has since been certified triple million by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) and platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). BTS promoted Be with performances at the American Music Awards and television programs, including The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Background

BTS released their fourth Korean-language studio album, Map of the Soul: 7, in February 2020, to critical and commercial acclaim.[1][2] In support of the album, the band was slated to begin the concert tour, Map of the Soul Tour in April 2020, but the tour was postponed following the COVID-19 pandemic.[3] During a YouTube broadcast, band member RM revealed that BTS were working on a new album.[4] He hinted that they would be sharing the preparation process of the forthcoming album through subsequent self-documented videos as part of their initiative to interact with the fans during the lockdown.[4][5] In subsequent broadcasts, it was revealed that the album would be written and produced by the band members.[5][6] In addition to writing songs for the album, the band members were heavily involved in the overall production process, undertaking the role of project managers in various fields, which included developing concepts, themes, as well as its visual design.[7][8][9] Jimin was responsible for A&R, acting as a link between the group and their management label.[5] Suga, V, and J-Hope handled the production together with Jin and Jungkook;[10] the latter was also responsible for directing the music video.[7] V and RM supervised the graphics and design of the album.[11] Speaking about the album in an interview with Teen Vogue, BTS stated: "An increase of direct participation in the album-making process allowed us to explore more aspects of our music and creativity."[12]

Music and lyrics

Be is primarily a pop record,[13] encompassing hip hop, EDM,[14] and disco genres[15] with synth-pop, neo soul,[16] funk,[17] R&B,[18][19] 1970s,[20][21] 1980s,[22] 1990s,[23] and 2010s mainstream music elements.[24] Vox called Be "a loudly retro mix of pop sounds ranging from frothy to funky, melancholic to mellow, filtered through a lens of determined positivity".[13] The album is 28 minutes and 30 seconds long and features eight songs.[25] It makes heavy use of acoustic guitars,[16] pianos,[15] funk bass,[17][26] drum machines, horns,[13] and sentimental string instruments.[14][20][21]

BTS took inspiration from the emotions they felt during the pandemic, to write songs for the album and convey their thoughts.[8][27] Created out of frustration, anxiety, and powerlessness,[28][29] the album title "Be" stands for "being" and encapsulates BTS' reflection on the present times.[8] As opposed to the vast atmospherics and psychoanalytical themes that can be found in the band's previous works,[30] Be is lyrically inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic,[17] with BTS describing it as "a letter of hope" during the quarantine era.[13][31] The record starts off slow with "warm, soothing ballad-esque comforts",[32][33] before picking up pace in the second half with "some of the band's more refined, savvy and uplifting pop yet".[17] The album expands on a wide range of emotions,[34] exploring themes of comfort, loneliness,[13] anxiety,[35] depression, burn-out,[36] fear,[17] frustration, restlessness, sadness,[23] hope, connection,[32] resolve, and joy.[37] Several reviewers, including Rolling Stone's Jeff Benjamin,[35] observed that the album explores the different moods that people are feeling during the unprecedented times.[14][15][32] Dani Blum of Pitchfork said that the album "fixates on the frustration and grief of life in quarantine, sifting through the blurry days to construct a new form of intimacy".[38]

The album opens with the ruminative "Life Goes On",[30] a midtempo alternative hip hop and synth-pop song underlaid with an acoustic guitar.[39][16] Pertaining to a mellow vibe,[14] the song has a folksy, stripped-down sound.[30][28] It makes use electronic beats,[19] 808 drums,[36] and melodic rhymes,[32] with "acrobatic" vocals and harmonies on the chorus.[35] The lyrics deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and speak of being hopeful for better times.[14][20] RM said that the track has "a simple message but a profound truth".[20] The second track, "Fly to My Room" is a 1990s-inspired R&B,[18] neo soul,[16] and pop song with gospel[19] and synth-pop elements.[14] Performed by Jimin, V, J-Hope, and Suga, the vulnerable track features "breathy" vocals and falsettos.[18][40] The former two switch back and forth in the verses and chorus, while the latter two rap in a "sing-song" style.[40] The song employs a sparse production for which '70s piano,[15] funky keyboards,[40] and trap programmed drum beats[19] provide minimalist instrumentation.[20] Lyrically, the track is about loneliness and confinement, and talks about mentally being able to escape the monotony of quarantine life.[13][33] The melancholic, slow-jam number "Blue & Grey" is a soft pop ballad[16] that relies a "sparse-yet-tender" production.[35] Set in a cinematic arrangement of minor chords[19] that includes acoustic guitar,[14] twinkling pianos, and wistful strings,[26] the emotional track[20][35] makes use of "breathy" and "crooning" vocals to confess about fear, depression, burn-out, and pandemic-induced loneliness, using the colors blue and grey.[13][23][36] Los Angeles Times labelled it as "one of the exemplary songs of the 'pandemic-pop' era" that acts as "a ribbon of immaculate bedroom emo, gorgeously harmonized but never show-offy or overpowering".[17]

The fourth track is a non-musical spoken worded "Skit" about BTS' first number one song on the US Billboard Hot 100, which serves an interlude to separate the album into two parts.[14][33] "Telepathy" is a playful 1980s-inflected disco and funk song that makes use of an electronic production.[14][15][22] The song is driven by '70s beats,[21] Auto-Tuned vocals,[20] and G-funk whistles.[26] Featuring a groovy bassline,[32] it employs synth bass, "stacked-up" vocal harmonies, a cowbell,[41] and jam band percussion in its production.[42] The lyrics detail the connection that one can feel from someone despite physical distance and sees BTS admitting to the disorientation caused by excessive free time.[21][35] "Dis-ease" is an old-school hip hop number that is accompanied by funk-laced horns and guitars. Lyrically, it delivers a message of strength and contains puns on the different forms of illnesses such as, BTS' addiction to work.[13][15][21] Features brassy instrumentals, drums, and a sparse scratching sound,[18][20] the track begins with a jazz guitar before shifting to a chopped and screwed drum breakdown.[24] The seventh track, "Stay", performed by Jungkook, Jin, and RM, is a future house,[15] dance-pop,[14] and EDM song[35] with 1990s[13] and 2010s influences.[24][22] Incorporating heavy bass and an instrumental chorus,[21][20] the song references how technology binds the band together with listeners.[30] The album closes with the summer anthem,[40] "Dynamite", a 1970s-flavoured disco-pop[29][43] song with elements of funk, soul[44] and bubblegum pop.[45] The upbeat production employs snapping handclaps, bounces, grooves, and beats.[46][47] The track features a funky bassline, vocal harmonies, and falsettos, with brass, keyboard chords, guitar sound.[48][19] Lyrically, it is about the joy and appreciation of little things that makes life valuable.[49][50][51]

Release and promotion

On August 13, 2020, Big Hit Entertainment held a corporate briefing where the agency confirmed that the new album would be released in the fourth quarter of that year.[52][53] On September 27, Big Hit uploaded a teaser poster with the album's name, also announcing the release date.[54] Preorders for the deluxe edition began the following day.[55] On October 30, BTS teased the title of the album's lead single "Life Goes On" on Twitter.[56] On November 10, the band posted the album's track list and digital cover.[57] Three days later, they held an unboxing session of the album which was broadcast live on their YouTube channel.[58] Nine months after Map of the Soul: 7, Be was released worldwide on November 20, 2020, through Big Hit, in conjunction with a music video for "Life Goes On".[39]

An "Essential Edition" of the album was announced by Big Hit on January 24, 2021, as a thank-you to fans for the milestones the band achieved. Pre-orders for this version opened on January 25.[59] The album retained the same eight-song tracklist as the deluxe edition, but the packaging's internal components contained some differences. "Surprise gifts" for the band's fandom were sequentially unveiled in the days leading up to the release on February 19.[60]

Live performances

On November 22, 2020, BTS performed "Life Goes On" for the first time at the American Music Awards of 2020, alongside "Dynamite".[61] The band performed it from the Seoul Olympic Stadium in matching black and white outfits.[62][63] The following day, they performed "Life Goes On" on Good Morning America and The Late Late Show with James Corden.[64][65] BTS made their MTV Unplugged debut on the February 23, 2021 special edition of the show titled MTV Unplugged Presents: BTS.[66] The group's half-hour long "historic appearance", as the first Korean act to headline the series,[67] saw them perform a stripped back, five-song setlist consisting of four tracks off the album—"Telepathy", "Blue & Grey", "Life Goes On", and "Dynamite"—and a "surprise cover" of Coldplay's "Fix You".[68] This marked the live premiere of the first two tracks, B-sides that the group had yet to perform since the album's release.[69] Each performance was filmed on a different set to match the mood of the song being sung, including an "arcade[-like] gameroom" for Telepathy, and "an indoor field...with blue and grey flowers" for "Blue & Grey".[66] For the third and fourth tracks, the group was accompanied by a live four-piece band, Ghost, comprising a drummer, guitarist, bassist and keyboardist.[68][70] Consequence of Sound's Mary Siroky reviewed the appearance favorably, writing that "the BTS boys brought their A-game...keeping their virtual performances new and exciting, refusing to let their distance from an audience push them into anything repetitive or mundane".[70] Siroky singled out Jin and Jimin's vocals on "Blue & Grey", noting how the two "soared in their upper registers, offering lush harmonies throughout".[70]

Be received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 80 based on 11 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[72] Aggregator AnyDecentMusic? gave it 7.3 out of 10, based on their assessment of the critical consensus.[71]

In her review for PopMatters, Ana Clara Ribeiro felt Be was a timeless pop offering that incorporated rap to create a sound that established BTS' legacy. Ribeiro said that although BTS' sonic identity was rap, she attributed Be's success to the band's vocalists.[29] Evening Standard's Jochan Embley called the album "exquisitely produced" with "near faultless" vocal performances,[26] a sentiment echoed by The Arts Desk's critic Peter Quinn in his review for the album.[41] Reviewers were impressed with the experimentation of diverse musical styles, including Embley,[26] Lenika Cruz of The Atlantic,[28] and Annabel Nugent of The Independent, who said that the album "avoids the pitfall of sounding like a checklist".[18] Vox's Aja Romano described it as a "sublime" album full of "seamless litany of bops intended to commemorate and celebrate getting through the Covid-19 pandemic",[13] with Lexi Lane of NBC News calling it BTS' "brightest and most unifying album yet".[33] Exclaim! writer Eva Zhu felt that the departure of Be towards a more "laidback" sound compared to the band's usual offerings was appealing to newer audience.[36]

Critics lauded the album's lyrical authenticity, intimacy, and simple message. Writing for NME, Rhian Daly described Be as the "most accurate musical encapsulation of the roller coaster that is pandemic life so far" in which the group strikes a "perfect balance between encouragement and reassurance".[15] In an enthusiastic review, AllMusic's Neil Z. Yeung complimented BTS' for their openness and intimacy in the lyrics, calling the album an inspiring soundtrack: "Despite its brief runtime, Be is an expert snapshot of time and place, a document of a worldwide event that manages to strengthen their connection to their listeners and push their songcraft forward with focus, heart, and humanity."[32] Katie Goh of i-D agreed and viewed it as a "the intimate, introspective lockdown project" that served as an honest depiction of people's struggles during 2020.[21] Reviewers such as Emma Saletta of MTV News, have cited the record as an offering of hope for the future,[14] with Benjamin calling it as BTS' "most on-brand album",[35] and Siroky dubbing it as "the cozy comedown" which "brings the listener home in every sense, inviting us into the world of these seven young men in a way none of their other albums have so far".[23] Stereogum, Time, and The Quietus found the album soothing, and praised the introspective lyricism about isolation and quarantine.[19][20][73]

A few reviewers found the album unadventurous.[74] For Clash, Malvika Padin asserted that the album is "far simpler" than the band's past releases "yet equally comforting" but criticized its lack of appeal to the casual listeners".[30] In the Los Angeles Times, August Brown deemed Be as the group's "most overt attempt to ascend the U.S. pop charts", but he remained favorable towards BTS' songwriting abilities, describing the album as "a trim, reflective and modest LP about resilience, written to meet a weary global mood".[17] In a mixed review for Slant Magazine, Sophia Ordaz acknowledged the album for its simple and lucid message, but argued that it exchanged "overstimulating spectacle for low-key introspection".[24]

Accolades

Esquire included Be on its year-end list of the 30 best albums of 2020.[75] Idolator ranked the album 53rd on its list of the 70 best pop albums of 2020.[76] The album won Album of the Year – 4th Quarter at the 2021 Gaon Chart Music Awards in January.[77] It also received a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2021 Melon Music Awards held on December 4, but did not win.[78] The following week, it won Album of the Year at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[79] At the 36th Golden Disc Awards, held in January 2022, Be won a Best Album bonsang and earned BTS their record fifth consecutive Album of the Year daesang.[80]

Commercial performance

Be debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 242,000 album-equivalent units, including 177,000 sales, on the chart dated December 5, 2020. The album is BTS' fifth chart-topper in the United States, making BTS the fastest group to earn five number-one albums since the Beatles between 1966 and 1968, as well as the first group to have two chart-topping albums in the country in 2020.[81] Its lead single "Life Goes On" debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 with 150,000 downloads and 14.9 million U.S. streams, becoming the band's third number-one song following "Dynamite" and "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)" remix. With this, BTS became the fastest group in over 42 years to earn three number-one songs in a span of three months since the Bee Gees. They became the second act following Ariana Grande to score three Hot 100 number one entries in 2020, as well as the first group to land two number-one debuts on the chart. "Life Goes On" marked the first song not sung in an English language to debut atop the chart.[82] BTS became the only act apart from Taylor Swift to debut at number one on the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 simultaneously.[83] They also became the first group and ninth overall act to prevail on top of the Artist 100, Hot 100, and Billboard 200 charts at the same time.[84] Seven tracks from the album charted concurrently on the Hot 100 chart, with "Life Goes On" and "Dynamite" in the top-10, "Blue & Grey" in the top-20, and "Stay" in the top-40. This stood as the most simultaneous entries on the Hot 100 chart by a Korean act.[85] With over 252,000 physical copies sold by the end of 2020, according to MRC Data, Be was the fifth best-selling physical album of the year in the US.[86] It was one of two BTS albums to make it on the top-ten ranking, the other being Map of the Soul: 7 in first place, making BTS the only artist with multiple albums on the chart.[87] In Canada, Be arrived at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart, giving BTS their fourth chart-topping album in the country.[88]

Be debuted at number one on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart with over 2.2 million copies sold in its first week. This marked the second-highest opening week sales figures in the chart's history, only behind Map of the Soul: 7 which holds the record with over 3.3 million copies its first week.[89][90] Be became BTS' eighth consecutive million seller in the country.[91] The album exceeded sales of 2,692,000 copies by the end of 2020, achieving the second position on Gaon's year-end chart, only behind Map of the Soul: 7. BTS had the most entries on the 100-spot ranking, with 13 of their albums entering the final chart.[92] In March 2021, the album received a triple million certification from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA).[93] In Japan, Be reached number one on the Oricon Albums Chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ).[94][95]

Be debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 19,562 copies, behind Michael Ball and Alfie Boe's Together at Christmas.[96] This became BTS' fourth top-10 album in the country.[97] In Ireland, the album topped the Irish Albums Chart, becoming the band's second chart-topper following Map of the Soul: 7. By doing so, BTS became the first group in eight years to have two number-one albums in the same calendar year since One Direction in 2012, and also the first act since Ed Sheeran in 2017.[98] The album was also a chart-topper in New Zealand, giving BTS their third number one album in the territory.[99] By reaching the same position on both the Norwegian Albums Chart and Ultratop 200 Albums chart, Be became BTS' first number one album in Norway and in the Flemish region of Belgium.[100][101] It also topped the charts in Denmark,[102] Poland,[103] and Portugal.[104] In Australia, Be entered at number two on the ARIA Albums chart, giving BTS their seventh top-10 entry.[105] The album also attained number two position in Finland,[106] France, Italy,[107] Netherlands,[108] Spain,[109] and Switzerland.[110] Similarly, Be reached number three in Sweden and Wallonia region of Belgium.[111][112] The album also entered Germany's Offizielle Top 100 at number four,[113] and the Czech Albums at number five.[114]

Following the release of the Essential Edition in February 2021, Be returned to the top 10 of the US Billboard 200 at number seven on the chart dated March 6,[115] with an additional 36,000 equivalent album units sold. Of this number, 28,000 copies were pure sales, giving the album a third non-consecutive week at number one on the Top Album Sales chart. BTS also returned to the top of the Artist 100 chart for their 16th week overall, further extending their record among all duos/groups.[116] In Japan, the album sold an additional 95,853 copies for the period February 15–21 and re-entered the top three of the weekly Oricon Albums Chart at number two on the issue dated March 1, 2021.[117] The album also ranked at number two on the monthly chart for February, with 118,912 cumulative sales.[118] On March 26, Billboard reported that 32 albums saw an increase in sales—for the week ending March 18—following the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. Of these, Be was the 12th highest-selling album—experiencing a 6% increase—and moved 15,300 units, which helped push it into the top 40 of the Billboard 200 at number 39.[119] As of August 2021, the album has remained on the chart for 37 consecutive weeks.[120]

BTS (auch Bangtan Boys; Koreanisch: 방탄소년단 Bangtan Sonyeondan) ist eine südkoreanische Boygroup der dritten K-Pop-Generation, bestehend aus sieben Mitgliedern, die 2010 von Big Hit Entertainment gegründet wurde und 2013 debütierte.[1][2] Der Name der Band Bangtan Sonyeondan ist eine Kombination aus 방탄 („kugelsicher“) und 소년단 („Pfadfinder“).[3] Im Juli 2017 wurde dem Akronym „BTS“ außerdem die Bedeutung Beyond the Scene (englisch für Jenseits der Szene) hinzugefügt.[4] Ihre Fans sind in einem Fanclub organisiert, der sich „A.R.M.Y“ (아미) nennt, was für „Adorable Representative M.C for Youth“ steht.[5]

Die sieben Mitglieder Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V und Jung Kook sind am Schreiben und Produzieren ihrer Songs und Alben beteiligt. Waren BTS anfangs eine Hip-Hop-Gruppe, entwickelte sich ihr Stil in eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Musikgenres. Ihre Texte sind häufig soziale oder persönliche Kommentare und beschäftigen sich mit der Psyche, Schulproblemen, dem Erwachsenwerden und Selbstliebe sowie Individualismus.

Nach ihrem Debüt am 13. Juni 2013 mit 2 Cool 4 Skool veröffentlichten sie ihr erstes Studioalbum Dark & Wild. Mit ihrem zweiten Studioalbum Wings im Jahr 2016 verkauften sie erstmals über eine Million Einheiten in Südkorea. Bis 2017 erreichte BTS durch die K-Pop-Subkultur internationale Bekanntheit und wurde zum Vorreiter der Koreanischen Welle in Nordamerika und brach dort mehrere Verkaufsrekorde. Als erste koreanische Gruppe erhielten sie Auszeichnungen der Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) und erreichten Platz eins der US-Albumcharts mit Love Yourself: Tear (2018). BTS ist eine der wenigen Gruppen seit den Beatles, die vier Nummer-eins-Alben in weniger als zwei Jahren hatten. In den US-Single-Charts erreichte BTS mit Dynamite, Savage Love, Life Goes On, Butter und Permission to Dance innerhalb von zehn Monaten fünfmal Platz eins und stellte damit einen Rekord von Michael Jackson aus dem Jahr 1988 ein.

Mit über 20 Millionen verkauften Alben in Südkorea ist BTS die erfolgreichste Gruppe der südkoreanischen Musikgeschichte und stellt mit Map of the Soul: 7 das meistverkaufte Album. Geschichte

Vor dem offiziellen Debüt

Die ersten Gruppenmitglieder wurden 2010 und 2011 durch Big Hits Hit It-Casting ausgewählt. Bis zur endgültigen Zusammensetzung der Gruppe für ihr Debüt wurden einige ursprüngliche Mitglieder durch neue ersetzt. Sechs Monate vor ihrem offiziellen Debüt begannen die Bangtan Boys auf diversen Plattformen, wie zum Beispiel Twitter, YouTube oder SoundCloud, mit ihren Fans zu interagieren, um somit ein starkes Verhältnis zu ihnen aufbauen zu können.

Vor BTS waren RM und Suga als Underground-Rapper tätig. Jin studierte an der Konkuk University. J-Hope nahm als Mitglied eines Street-Dance-Teams an verschiedenen Tanzwettbewerben teil. Jimin studierte Modernen Tanz an der Busan High School of Arts, die er später verließ, um auf die Arts Korea High School zu wechseln, wo er V kennenlernte. Jung Kook bekam nach seinem Ausstieg aus der Talentshow Superstar K Angebote von sieben Agenturen. Letztendlich ging er zu Big Hit Entertainment, da er von RMs Rap begeistert war.

Alle Mitglieder, vor allem RM, Suga und J-Hope, sind aktiv am Komponieren ihrer Songs beteiligt, was in der K-Pop-Industrie nicht häufig der Fall ist. Die Mitglieder schreiben über die Träume und Ziele der Jugend, Mobbing, die Ideale der jetzigen und nächsten Generation und politische/gesellschaftliche Probleme (z. B. das Sewol-Unglück). Letzteres wird von vielen Idol-Gruppen bewusst vermieden, was dazu führte, dass BTS als „Revolutionäre des K-Pop“ bezeichnet wurden.[6][7]

2013–2014: Debüt mit 2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL8, 2?, Skool Luv Affair und Dark & Wild

Im Juni 2013 veröffentlichte die Gruppe mit No More Dream ihre Debütsingle, gekoppelt mit ihrer ersten EP 2 Cool 4 Skool.[8] Mit 2 Cool 4 Skool gewannen sie zahlreiche Preise der Kategorie Bester Newcomer, unter anderem bei den MelOn Music Awards 2013 sowie den Golden Disk Awards und den Seoul Music Awards 2014. Einen Monat nach No More Dream erfolgte die Veröffentlichung ihrer zweiten Single We are Bulletproof Pt. II. Im September veröffentlichten sie ihre Single N.O. und die EP O!RUL8,2? (Oh! Are You Late, Too?), die Platz 4 der südkoreanischen Gaon Charts erreichte.[9] Die im Februar 2014 veröffentlichte EP Skool Luv Affair erreichte Platz 3 der Billboard World Albums Charts.[10]

Im März 2014 veröffentlichten sie die japanische Version von 2 Cool 4 Skool mit No More Dream als Singleauskopplung. Im selben Jahr traten BTS beim Bridge-to-Korea-Festival in Russland vor 10.000 Zuschauern auf.[11] Am 10. August 2014 waren sie bei der KCON in Los Angeles zu Gast.[12] Im selben Monat wurde Danger als die Comeback-Single ihres ersten Studioalbums Dark & Wild veröffentlicht, von dem 161.939 Einheiten verkauft wurden.[13][14]

Von Oktober bis Dezember ging BTS auf Tournee, die sie 2014 BTS Live Trilogy – Episode II: The Red Bullet nannten. Sie spielten in Südkorea, den Philippinen, Singapur, Japan, Thailand und Malaysia.[15]

2015: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Welttournee und steigende Popularität

Vom 10. bis 19. Februar 2015 waren BTS auf der Wake Up: Open Your Eyes Tour in Japan. Sie traten vor insgesamt 25.000 Fans in den Städten Tokio, Osaka, Nagoya und Fukuoka auf.[16] Ende März gaben sie ihr zweites Solo-Konzert in Korea, mit dem Titel 2015 BTS Live Trilogy – Episode 1: BTS Begins.[17] Ihre dritte EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 wurde am 29. April 2015 veröffentlicht. Im Juni landete sie als einziges koreanisches Album auf der von Fuse erstellten Liste „27 Best Albums of 2015 So Far“.[18]

Mit ihrer Single I Need U gewannen die Bangtan Boys am 5. Mai 2015 erstmals den ersten Platz bei SBS MTVs Musikprogramm The Show.[19] Von The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 wurden in Südkorea 200.000 Einheiten verkauft.[20] Zum einjährigen Jubiläum ihres Debüts in Japan veröffentlichten sie am 4. Juni ihre vierte japanische Single For You, die die Spitze der Oricon-Charts erreichte.[21]

Am 23. Juni kam das Musikvideo zu ihrer nächsten Single Dope (쩔어 Jjeoreo) aus The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 heraus und wurde zu BTS’ erstem Musikvideo, das 100 Millionen Klicks auf Youtube erreichte.[22] Dope erreichte Platz 3 der Billboard World Digital Charts.[23] Im Rahmen ihrer Welttournee 2015 Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet besuchten sie Malaysia, Südamerika, Australien, die Vereinigten Staaten und Hongkong. BTS trat in Japan auf dem Festival Summer Sonic auf (15. August Tokio, 16. August Osaka).[24][25]

Seit dem 1. August veröffentlicht BTS wöchentlich die Variety-Show Run BTS online auf den Plattformen V Live und Weverse (seit 2020). In der Sendung absolvieren die BTS-Mitglieder unterschiedliche Missionen, Herausforderung und diverse Spiele. Gelegentlich werden auch Gäste in die Show eingeladen.[26]

Am 30. November kam die nächste EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 auf den Markt. Davor spielten sie vom 27. bis 29. November drei Konzerte (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: On Stage), wo sie erstmals das neue Titellied Run live präsentierten.[27] Im Zuge der Veröffentlichung von Run erschienen Anfang Januar 2016 Figuren basierend auf den Mitgliedern von BTS im Online-Rollenspiel Elsword von Nexon.[28][29]

Bei den Mnet Asian Music Awards 2015 wurden sie aufgrund ihrer hohen internationalen Bekanntheit mit dem Preis Best World Performer ausgezeichnet. Während der Veranstaltung traten sie zusammen mit GOT7 auf.[30] Am 8. Dezember wurde die japanische Version von I Need You als fünfte Single in Japan veröffentlicht.[31]

2016: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever, Youth und Wings

Im März 2016 veröffentlichte BTS Run als ihre fünfte japanische Single.[32] Am 2. Mai kam die letzte EP der Most Beautiful Moment In Life-Trilogie, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever, raus. Um ihre Alben zu promoten, hielten die Bangtan Boys zwei Konzerte in der Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul. Insgesamt wurden 24.000 Tickets verkauft.[33] Danach gingen sie auf Asientournee. 144.000 Fans besuchten die Konzerte.[34] Sie traten im Rahmen der KCONs in Los Angeles (Juni 2016) und New York (Juli 2016) auf, beide Male vor ausverkauftem Publikum.[35]

Am 7. September 2016 kam das zweite japanische Album Youth auf den Markt. Es wurde innerhalb von 24 Stunden 44.000 mal gekauft und erreichte Platz 1 der japanischen Albumcharts.[36]

Am 16. Oktober 2016 veröffentlichten BTS ihr zweites Album Wings mit dem Titellied Blood Sweat & Tears. Das Album wurde 500.000 mal vorbestellt.[37] Mit Wings erreichte BTS Platz eins zahlreicher Charts in Südkorea (in den Medien wird das Erreichen von Rang eins in allen relevanten Charts meist „All-Kill“ genannt).[38] Das Musikvideo zu Blood Sweat & Tears wurde in den ersten 24 Stunden sechs Millionen Mal angeschaut und brach somit den Rekord für die meisten Klicks eines K-Pop-Musikvideos an einem Tag.[39] Der Song landete in den britischen Musikcharts, was zuvor keinem anderen südkoreanischen Künstler gelang.[40] Das Album debütierte auf Platz 26 der US-Billboard 200 und brach somit den Rekord für die höchste Chartplatzierung einer K-Pop-Gruppe in den Vereinigten Staaten.[41] Mit Wings schaffte es BTS als erste K-Pop-Gruppe, länger als eine Woche in den US-Charts zu bleiben. Außerdem debütierte Blood Sweat & Tears auf Platz 86 der Billboard Canadian Hot 100, während Wings Platz 19 der Billboard Canadian Albums Charts erreichte.[42] Für das darauffolgende offizielle Fan-Meeting in Seoul wurden alle 38.000 Karten verkauft.[43]

BTS wird mit dem Melon Music Award ausgezeichnet (2016)

Am 19. November 2016 kündigten BTS ihre Welttournee Live Trilogy Episode III: The Wings Tour an. Am selben Abend gewannen sie ihren ersten Hauptpreis (Daesang) Album of the Year für The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever bei den Melon Music Awards.[44] Am 2. Dezember folgte ihr zweiter Daesang in der Kategorie Artist of the Year bei den Mnet Asian Music Awards.[45] Mit diesem Gewinn schrieben die Bangtan Boys Geschichte als erste Gewinner, die nicht bei einer der großen drei Agenturen (S.M., YG und JYP) unter Vertrag stehen.[46]

2017: You Never Walk Alone und Love Yourself 承 'Her'

Im Februar 2017 wurde Wings unter dem Titel Wings: You Never Walk Alone wiederveröffentlicht. Das Album wurde über 700.000-mal vorbestellt.[47][48] Die Single Spring Day erreichte Platz eins in den Charts der acht größten südkoreanischen Musikportale. Spring Day stieg auf Platz 15 der amerikanischen Bubbling Under Hot 100 ein.[49] Im Mai 2017 erhielten sie als erste südkoreanische Boyband den „Billboard Music Award“ in der Kategorie „Top Social Artist“.[50] Der Preis wird durch Abstimmung vergeben an den Musikkünstler, der am besten mit Fans interagiert, über soziale Medien, Streaming oder vor Ort. BTS gewann den Preis seit 2017 in jedem Jahr (Stand 2021). Im Juli erschien ein Remake des Liedes Come Back Home mit Seo Taiji and Boys.[51]

2017 wurde BTS Werbebotschafter für die Tourismuszentrale der Stadt Seoul. In diesem Zuge wurde der Werbesong With Seoul veröffentlicht.[52] Im gleichen Zeitraum arbeitete BTS mit dem Instant-Messenger Line für eine Werbepartnerschaft zusammen. Dabei wurden BT21-Figuren basierend auf den sieben Mitgliedern veröffentlicht. Diese dienen Line als Merchandise, z. B. für Emojis oder Plüschfiguren sowie weiteren Artikeln der Line Friends (von Line entworfene Figuren).[53]

Im September erschien die fünfte EP von BTS mit dem Titel Love Yourself 承 ’Her‘.[54] Die EP enthält den Song Best Of Me, eine Zusammenarbeit mit Andrew Taggart von The Chainsmokers.[55] Love Yourself 承 ’Her‘ schaffte es als erstes Album einer K-Pop-Gruppe, in die offiziellen deutschen Charts zu kommen, als es auf Platz 57 der Top-100-Album-Charts debütierte.[56] Am 25. September 2017 erzielten BTS ihr erstes Hot-100-Debüt mit dem Titellied DNA auf Platz 85 und hielten sich insgesamt vier Wochen in den Charts. Sie sind somit die erste K-Pop-Boygroup, die die Hot 100 erreichte und nach PSY die zweiten Künstler, die dies mit einem koreanischen Song schafften.[57] Das Musikvideo zu DNA erreichte 21 Millionen Klicks in den ersten 24 Stunden und landete auf Platz 13 der meisten Aufrufe eines Videos innerhalb eines Tages.[58] Ein Remix von Steve Aoki des Songs MIC Drop mit US-Rapper Desiigner wurde als zweite Single veröffentlicht. Der Song brach DNAs Rekord und erreichte die höchste Chartplatzierung auf den Hot 100, als es auf Platz 28 debütierte und zehn Wochen lang in den Charts blieb.[59] In Südkorea landete der Song auf Platz 23 der Gaon Charts.[60] In Deutschland debütierte der Song auf Platz 71 der Single-Charts und wurde zum ersten deutschen Charteinstieg der Gruppe.[61] Später wurden DNA und MIC Drop auf Japanisch mit einem weiteren Song (Crystal Snow) in Japan als EP veröffentlicht. Die EP wurde mit der Doppel-Platin ausgezeichnet und verkaufte sich mehr als 500.000-mal – die höchsten Verkaufszahlen eines nicht-japanischen Künstlers in Japan für das Jahr 2017.[62]

BTS in Los Angeles für die American Music Awards

Im November 2017 traten die Bangtan Boys als erste südkoreanische Gruppe bei den American Music Awards auf.[63] Sie gewannen als erste Künstler zum zweiten Mal in Folge den Artist of The Year Award bei den Mnet Asian Music Awards 2017.[64] Spring Day wurde als Song des Jahres bei den Melon Music Awards ausgezeichnet.[65]

Im Dezember 2017 traten sie als erste südkoreanische Künstler bei Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve auf.[66] Im selben Monat hatten sie ihr japanisches TV-Debüt bei Japan Music Station Super Live.[67]

2018: Internationaler Durchbruch mit Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear‘ und Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer‘

Im Januar 2018 gewannen die Bangtan Boys als erste Gruppe, die nicht bei den drei großen südkoreanischen Labels („Big Three“) unter Vertrag steht, den Hauptpreis (Daesang) sowohl bei den Golden Disc Awards als auch bei den Seoul Music Awards.[68] Im Februar bekamen sie als erste Idol-Gruppe den Preis Musician Of The Year bei den Korean Music Awards.[69] Im selben Monat wurden DNA und MIC Drop von der RIAA in den UDA mit Gold ausgezeichnet. Somit sind die Bangtan Boys die ersten und einzigen südkoreanischen Künstler mit zwei RIAA-Auszeichnungen.[70]

Im März erschien die erste von acht Folgen der YouTube-Red-Dokumentation Burn The Stage, die die Band bei ihrer Wings Tour begleitet.[71] Kurz darauf erschien BTS’ drittes japanisches Album Face Yourself[72] und ihr drittes koreanisches Album Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’.

Im August 2018 wurde die Single Fake Love von ihrem Album Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ von der RIAA mit Gold ausgezeichnet.[73] Am 24. August erschien das letzte Album der Love-Yourself-Trilogie, Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’, mit dem Titelsong Idol, dessen Musikvideo den YouTube-Rekord für die meisten Aufrufe innerhalb der ersten 24 Stunden nach dem Upload brach.[74] Eine Version mit Nicki Minaj wurde online veröffentlicht. Am 25. August 2018 begann in Seoul die Love Yourself World Tour. Im Zuge der Welttournee trat die Gruppe am 16. und 17. Oktober in Berlin in der Mercedes-Benz Arena auf.[75][76]

Am 24. September stellte die Gruppe bei der Veranstaltung der Vereinten Nationen in New York City das Projekt Generation Unlimited von UNICEF vor und RM sprach vor Politikern.[77] Mit der Veröffentlichung der Love Yourself-Serie gaben BTS ihre „Love Myself“-Kampagne in Zusammenarbeit mit UNICEF bekannt. Für das Projekt, welches die Gewalt gegen Kinder und Teenager weltweit stoppen soll, hat die Gruppe mehr als 1,4 Millionen US-Dollar gesammelt.[78]

Im Oktober verlieh der südkoreanische Präsident Moon Jae-in jedem Mitglied einen Orden für ihren außergewöhnlichen Beitrag zur koreanischen Kultur und deren Weiterverbreitung. BTS sind die jüngsten und ersten Idols, die diese Medaille bei den Kulturpreisen erhielten.[79] Am 25. Oktober veröffentlichte der DJ Steve Aoki seine Single Waste It On Me mit Jung Kook und RM. Der Song debütierte auf Platz 89 der US Billboard Hot 100 Charts.[80] In Deutschland erreichte das Lied Position 98 der deutschen Single-Charts.[81]

Am 15. November erschien der erste Kinofilm der Gruppe, Burn The Stage: The Movie. Der auf der YouTube-Red-Serie basierende Film brach den Box-Office-Rekord für eine Dokumentation über Musiker. In der ersten Woche wurden weltweit 2.500 Kinotickets verkauft. In den USA spielte der Film in vier Tagen 3,6 Millionen Dollar ein. Weltweit spielte die Dokumentation in der ersten Woche 14 Millionen Dollar ein. Zuletzt hielten One Direction den Rekord mit ihrem 2014 veröffentlichten Konzertfilm One Direction – This is Us.[82]

2019: Map of the Soul: Persona

BTS bei dem Seoul Music Awards 2019

Im Februar 2019 nahmen BTS als die erste K-Pop-Gruppe an einer Grammy-Preisverleihung teil. Dort übergaben sie den Preis für das Beste R&B-Album an die Sängerin H.E.R.[83] Im selben Monat kündigte BigHit die erste Stadion-Tournee der Gruppe namens Love Yourself: Speak Yourself an. Die Tickets für Stadien wie Wembley, Stade de France und MetLife waren binnen weniger Stunden ausverkauft, deshalb wurden für alle Städte Zusatzkonzerte angesagt.[84]

Am 12. April 2019 erschien das Album Map of the Soul: Persona.[85] In Deutschland stieg das Album auf Platz drei ein und wurde zum höchsten Einstieg der Gruppe in den offiziellen deutschen Charts.[86] Ihren ersten Auftritt mit der Single Boy With Luv hatte BTS bei Saturday Night Live in New York.[87] Im Vereinigten Königreich ist es das erste Album eines koreanischen Künstlers, das die Spitze der Album-Charts erreichte.[88] In Südkorea brach das Album einen 24 Jahre alten Rekord, als über 3,2 Millionen Einheiten verkauft wurden und Persona zum meistverkauften Musikalbum aller Zeiten wurde.[89]

Im April 2019 erschien BTS in der Liste der 100 einflussreichsten Personen des Jahres des Time-Magazins.[90]

Am 2. Mai 2019 gewannen sie zum dritten Mal in Folge den Preis „Top Social Artist“ und als erste koreanische Gruppe „Top Duo/Group“ bei den Billboard Music Awards, bei denen sie ihre erste Performance von „Boy With Luv“ mit der Sängerin Halsey hatten.[91] Im Mai erschien außerdem die Parfüm-Kollektion der Gruppe namens L’Atelier des Subtils in Zusammenarbeit mit VT Cosmetics.[92]

Für das Simulationsspiel BTS WORLD, bei dem der Spieler in die Rolle des Managers der Band schlüpft, wurden drei Soundtracks veröffentlicht: Dream Glow von Jimin, Jung Kook und Jin mit Charli XCX, A Brand New Day von J-Hope und V mit der schwedischen Popsängerin Zara Larsson und All Night von RM und SUGA mit US-Rapper Juice Wrld.[93][94] Die Soundtracks des Spiels erschienen am 28. Juni 2019 als CD-Box, welche in Südkorea 553.364 mal verkauft wurde.[95]

Im Oktober trat BTS im König-Fahd-Stadion in Riad auf und war damit der erste ausländische Act, der ein Solokonzert in Saudi-Arabien gab.[96] Laut Billboards Boxscore-Charts erzielte BTS einen Bruttogewinn von über 196 Millionen Dollar und spielte 42 Shows im Zeitraum vom 1. November 2018 bis zum 31. Oktober 2019 vor über 1,6 Millionen Besuchern und belegte in den Top 40 Tours zum Jahresende hinter Ed Sheeran und Pink den dritten Platz in der Gesamtwertung.[97]

Im November war BTS die erste K-Pop-Gruppe, die bei den American Music Awards den Preis für „Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock“ gewann.[98]

Bei den Jahresendveranstaltungen Melon Music Awards 2019 und den Mnet Asian Music Awards 2019 erhielt BTS als erster Künstler in der Geschichte des K-Pop alle Hauptpreise (Daesang) bei beiden Zeremonien. Sie bekamen jeweils vier pro Preisverleihung.[99][100] Bei den 34. Golden Disc Awards war BTS der erste Künstler in der Geschichte, der in einem einzigen Jahr sowohl in der physischen als auch in der digitalen Kategorie den Hauptpreis gewann.[101]

Am Ende des Jahres belegte BTS Platz 15 in der Billboard-Top-Artist-Rangliste 2019[102] und in der Duo/Gruppen-Rangliste war die Gruppe auf Platz zwei hinter den Jonas Brothers.[103] Map of the Soul: Persona war nach Nielsen Music das zweitmeistverkaufte physischen Album des Jahres 2019 in den USA, hinter Taylor Swifts Lover, und belegte in der Gesamtwertung der Top-10-Alben (Gesamtverkäufe) in den USA den sechsten Platz.[104] Mit weltweiten Verkäufen von 2,5 Millionen Platten war Map of the Soul: Persona nach Ermittlung der International Federation of the Phonographic Industry das drittmeistverkaufte Album des Jahres 2019.[105] Außerdem schaffte es BTS zum zweiten Jahr in Folge in die Top 10 der meistverkauften Künstler des Jahres. Dadurch wurden sie der erste nicht-englischsprachige Act, der dies erreichte.[106] Map of the Soul: Persona war auch das weltweit zweitmeistverkaufte Album einer Band, hinter Arashis 5x20 All the Best! 1999–2019.[107] Im Magazin Variety wurde die Gruppe zur „Hitmakers Group of the Year“ gekrönt.[108]

Im Dezember 2019 kündigte die FIA-Formel-E-Meisterschaft an, in Zukunft mit BTS als Markenbotschafter zusammenzuarbeiten, um weltweit auf die Folgen des Klimawandels und die Vorteile von Elektrofahrzeugen aufmerksam zu machen.[109]

2020: Map of the Soul: 7, Dynamite und Be

Im Januar 2020 veröffentlichte BTS Black Swan mit einem Kunstfilm mit Choreographie der slowenischen Tanzgruppe MN Dance Company als erste Single aus ihrem vierten Studioalbum Map of the Soul: 7.[110] Die Vorbestellungen für das Album erreichten einen Rekordwert von 4,02 Millionen und damit wurde der bisherige Rekord von 2,68 Millionen von Map of the Soul: Persona gebrochen.[111] Black Swan stieg auf Platz 57 der Billboard Hot 100 ein und auf Platz 46 der britischen Single-Charts. In Deutschland debütierte die Single auf Platz 77.[112] Im selben Monat trat BTS an der Seite von Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, Mason Ramsey und Nas bei den 62. Grammy Awards auf und war damit die erste koreanische Gruppe, die bei den Grammys auftrat.[113]

Am 21. Februar wurde Map of the Soul: 7 veröffentlicht. Die Lead-Single des Albums, ON, wurde mit einer weiteren Version mit der australischen Sängerin Sia digital veröffentlicht.[114] Laut Gaon verkaufte sich Map of the Soul: 7 in den ersten neun Tagen nach Veröffentlichung über 4,1 Millionen Mal und übertraf damit den Rekord des Vorgängeralbums. Es wurde so zum meistverkauften Album der südkoreanischen Geschichte.[115] Das Album debütierte an der Spitze der U.S. Billboard 200 mit über 422.000 verkauften Einheiten in der ersten Woche.[116] In Deutschland belegte BTS zum ersten Mal mit 7 den ersten Platz der deutschen Album-Charts.[117] Mit Map of the Soul: 7 wurde BTS zur ersten asiatischen Gruppe, die die Spitze der Charts in den fünf größten Musikmärkten der Welt (USA, Japan, UK, Deutschland und Frankreich) erreichte.[118] Mit ON stieg BTS erstmals in die Top Fünf der Hot 100 ein. Der Song erzielte 86.000 Downloads.[119] In Deutschland debütierte die Single auf Platz 34.[120]

BTS sollten ab April ihre vierte weltweite Konzerttournee und ihre zweite Stadiontournee, die „Map of the Soul“-Tournee, starten. Die Termine in Seoul wurden jedoch wegen der Coronavirus-Pandemie abgesagt und die restliche Welttournee wurde schließlich auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben.[121][122]

Im März startete Big Hit Entertainment auf der Social-Media-App Weverse eine Videoreihe mit dem Titel Learn Korean with BTS, mit dem Ziel, „das Lernen der koreanischen Sprache für Fans weltweit, die aufgrund der Sprachbarriere Schwierigkeiten haben, die Musik und Inhalte von BTS zu genießen, einfach und unterhaltsam zu machen.“ Die Videos wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit Experten des Korean Language Content Institute und der Hankuk University of Foreign Studies entwickelt.[123]

Im April war BTS der erste südkoreanische Künstler, der insgesamt mehr als 20 Millionen Albumverkäufe erreichte und wurde damit zum meistverkauften Künstler in der Geschichte Südkoreas.[124] Im selben Monat veranstaltete die Gruppe ein zweitägiges Online-Streaming-Konzert mit dem Titel „Bang Bang Con“, bei dem Filmmaterial vergangener Konzerte auf ihrem YouTube-Kanal gestreamt wurde. Mehr als 50 Millionen Mal wurde der Stream angeklickt.[125]

Am 7. Juni nahm die Gruppe an der Online-Schulabschlussfeier Dear Class of 2020 teil. Die Mitglieder sangen einige Songs und hielten emotionale Reden für die Schulabsolventen.[126] Am 14. Juni veranstaltete BTS ein 100-minütiges Online-Live-Konzert, Bang Bang Con: The Live, als Teil ihrer siebten Jubiläumsfeier. Es verzeichnete 756.000 gleichzeitige Zuschauer in 107 Ländern und stellte damit den Rekord für das größte Publikum für ein zahlungspflichtiges virtuelles Konzert auf.[127] Am 19. Juni veröffentlichte BTS die japanische Single Stay Gold aus ihrem vierten japanischen Studioalbum Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey, das am 14. Juli veröffentlicht wurde. Das Album stieg auf Platz eins der japanischen Oricon-Charts ein und verkaufte sich in den ersten beiden Tagen über 500.000 Mal.[128] In Deutschland debütierte das Album auf Platz sechs der Album-Charts und hielt sich insgesamt acht Wochen in den Charts.[129]

Am 21. August veröffentlichte BTS ihre erste englischsprachige Single Dynamite. Das Musikvideo brach den YouTube-Rekord für die meistgesehene Premiere mit mehr als drei Millionen Zuschauern und stellte mit 101 Millionen Klicks einen neuen Rekord für das meistgesehene Video in den ersten 24 Stunden des Releases auf.[130] Dynamite debütierte auf Platz eins der US-Billboard-Hot-100-Charts mit über 260.000 Verkäufen – genug, um die am schnellsten verkaufte Single seit Taylor Swifts Look What You Made Me Do (2017) zu werden. BTS wurde damit zum ersten südkoreanischen Künstler (zweiter asiatischer), der in den Vereinigten Staaten den Nummer-1-Song hatte.[131] Dynamite verbrachte insgesamt zwei Wochen auf dem ersten Platz.[132] In der fünften Woche erreichte die Single auch Platz eins in den neuen Billboard-Charts Global 200 und Global Excluding US und war damit die erste Single, die gleichzeitig in beiden Charts an der Spitze stand.[133] In den US Mainstream Top 40, auch bekannt als die Pop-Songs-Charts für Radios, erreichte Dynamite Platz neun und wurde damit BTS’ erster Song in den Top 10 und der höchste Charteinstieg einer koreanischen Band.[134] Der Song gab BTS ihren höchsten Charteinstieg in den deutschen Single-Charts, als er auf Platz acht einstieg.[135] In den deutschen Airplay-Charts erreichte Dynamite die Höchstposition auf Platz vier in der zehnten Chartwoche.[136] Dynamite ist mit 23 Gewinnen der meistgekrönte Song bei den Musik-Shows in Südkorea – zuvor lag der Rekord bei „Boy With Luv“ mit 21 Gewinnen.[137]

Am 31. August trat BTS erstmals bei den MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) mit der ersten Live-Aufführung von Dynamite auf und gewann vier Auszeichnungen: „Best Group“, „Best Choreo“, „Best Pop-Video“ und „Best K-Pop.“[138] Am 14. Oktober trat BTS mit Dynamite bei den 2020 Billboard Music Awards auf und gewannen zum vierten Mal in Folge den Top Social Artist Award.[139] Am 2. Oktober veröffentlichte BTS einen Remix von Jawsh 685 und Jason Derulos Single Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat), der es auf Platz eins der Billboard-Hot-100-Charts schaffte und zum zweiten Nummer-1-Hit der Gruppe in den Vereinigten Staaten wurde. In der Zwischenzeit blieb Dynamite auf Platz zwei und somit wurde BTS zur vierten Gruppe (nach den Beatles, den Bee Gees und OutKast), die gleichzeitig die ersten beiden Plätze der Hot 100 belegte.[140] Savage Love war weltweit sehr erfolgreich und erreichte Platz eins der Billboard Global 200.[141]

Am 10. und 11. Oktober veranstaltete BTS im KSPO Dome in Seoul ein zweitägiges virtuelles Konzert mit dem Titel Map of the Soul ON:E, das mit 993.000 Zuschauern aus 191 Ländern BangBangCons Rekord für die meisten Zuschauer eines kostenpflichtigen Live-Stream-Konzerts brach.[142] Im selben Monat wurde ihr altes Album Skool Luv Affair (2014) neuveröffentlicht und stieg infolgedessen auf Platz 35 der deutschen Album-Charts ein.[143]

Am 20. November veröffentlichte BTS ihr fünftes koreanisches Studioalbum BE[144][145][146] mit dem Titelsong Life Goes On. Auf der Veranstaltung der American Music Awards am 22. November wurde der Titelsong erstmals aufgeführt.[147]

Am 24. November wurde die Gruppe in der Kategorie Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance der Grammy Awards 2021 mit ihrem Song Dynamite nominiert. Dadurch ist BTS die erste K-Pop Gruppe, die für einen Grammy nominiert wurde.[148]

2021: BTS, the Best, Butter und Permission to Dance

Bei den Grammy Awards 2021 am 14. März präsentierten BTS Dynamite.[149]

Am 21. Mai veröffentlichten BTS ihre zweite englischsprachige Single Butter. Mit dem Musikvideo dazu brach die Band ihre eigenen YouTube-Rekorde aus dem Vorjahr bezüglich Zuschauerzahlen bei der Premiere und innerhalb eines Tages: Über 3,9 Millionen Menschen waren bei der Veröffentlichung live dabei und 108,2 Millionen Aufrufe hatte das Video innerhalb der folgenden 24 Stunden.[150] Mit elf Millionen Streams innerhalb eines Tages stellte Butter auch auf Spotify einen neuen Rekord auf.[151] Butter stieg an der Spitze der US Billboard Hot 100 Charts ein und wurde damit zum vierten Lied der Gruppe auf Platz eins innerhalb der letzten neun Monate.[152] Butter blieb für sieben aufeinanderfolgende Wochen auf Platz eins der Charts, die längste Dauer eines Songs an der Spitze seit One Sweet Day von Mariah Carey und Boyz II Men im Jahr 1995.[153]

Am 16. Juni veröffentlichten BTS das Album BTS, the Best, welches mehrheitlich Lieder auf Japanisch beinhaltet und in Japan auf Platz eins der Albumcharts einstieg.[154]

Am 9. Juni wurde mit Permission to Dance die dritte englischsprachige Single von BTS veröffentlicht. Am 19. Juli löste Permission to Dance den vorherigen Spitzenreiter Butter auf Platz eins der US-Billboard-Hot-100-Charts direkt ab. Es ist das erste Mal, dass ein Song eines Künstlers an der Chartspitze direkt durch einen neuen Song des Künstlers abgelöst wurde.[155] Der fünfte Nummer-eins-Hit innerhalb von zehn Monaten macht BTS zur Gruppe mit den meisten Topplatzierungen innerhalb so kurzer Zeit seit Michael Jackson im Jahr 1988.[153]

Am 24. September wurde die Single My Universe veröffentlicht, für die Coldplay mit BTS zusammenarbeitete. Der Song erreichte Platz eins der Single-Charts in den USA,[156] Platz 11 in der Schweiz und Platz 13 in Deutschland. Darüber hinaus brachte das Bandmitglied Suga am 18. Oktober zu der Coldplay-Kollaboration ein Remix heraus (My Universe - SUGA`s Remix).[157] Kurz darauf erschien die zweite Staffel der Variety-Show BTS in the Soop (dt. ‚BTS im Wald‘). In der Serie nehmen sich die Mitglieder eine Auszeit vom Stadtleben und erholen sich auf einem Anwesen im Wald (Soop 숲sup ist Koreanisch für ‚Wald‘).[158]

Zwischen Oktober 2021 und April 2022 traten BTS im Rahmen der Konzertserie Permission to Dance on Stage zwölfmal in den USA und in Südkorea auf. Das erste Konzert am 24. Oktober im Seoul Olympic Stadium fand aufgrund der COVID-19-Pandemie ohne Publikum statt und wurde online in 197 Länder übertragen.[159] Zwischen dem 27. November und dem 2. Dezember traten BTS viermal im SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles auf. Gemäß Billboard waren die Konzerte mit 214.000 verkauften Tickets und über 33,3 Millionen US-Dollar der größte Kassenerfolg seit fast einem Jahrzehnt und mit Abstand der größte jemals von Künstlern mit einem nicht englischsprachigen Programm.[160]

2022: Proof und Auszeit

Am 10. Juni 2022 veröffentlichten BTS das dreiteilige Anthology-Album Proof mit der Leadsingle Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment). Bereits am ersten Tag wurde das Album über zwei Millionen Mal verkauft.[161] In Deutschland[162], Österreich[163] und der Schweiz[164] stieg das Album direkt auf Platz 1 der Albumcharts ein.

Am 14. Juni gab die Band in einem auf YouTube veröffentlichten Video bekannt, auf unbestimmte Zeit pausieren zu wollen. Die Bandmitglieder wollen sich auf ihre Solokarrieren als Musiker und Schauspieler konzentrieren, zugleich sprachen RM und Jimin von „Erschöpfung“.[165] Gerüchte, welche von einer Auflösung der Band sprachen, wurden sowohl durch die Band als auch durch Big Hit Entertainment dementiert.[166] Während BTS vorerst nicht mehr gemeinsam an neuer Musik arbeiten, führen sie diverse ihrer Aktivitäten weiter, unter anderem als Botschafter für die Bewerbung Busans um die Expo 2030[167] und als Botschafter für die Goal of the Century-Kampagne von Hyundai[168].

BTS Universe

Das BTS Universe (oder BU, früher: HYYH) ist ein fiktives Universum, das von BigHit Entertainment eigenständig erschaffen wurde und auf den sieben Mitgliedern basiert.

Entstehung und Inhalt

Das Franchise begann mit der Albumtrilogie The Most Beautiful Moment In Life im April 2015 mit dem Musikvideo zu I Need U. Musikvideos, die zum BTS Universe gehören, werden von BigHit als solche gekennzeichnet.

Im August 2017, vor dem Start der Love Yourself-Trilogie, veröffentlichte BigHit eine Reihe von Kurzfilmen namens Highlight Reels, die ebenfalls zum BTS Universe gehören.[169]

Die Alben der Love Yourself-Reihe (Her, Tear und Answer) enthalten sogenannte „HYYH Notes“. Es sind verschiedene Tagebucheinträge aus der Vergangenheit und der Zukunft der sieben Mitglieder.

Im Januar 2019 erschien ein Webtoon mit dem Namen The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt.0 <SAVE ME>, der den Inhalt des BTS Universe in Form eines Cartoons darstellt. Das älteste Mitglied Jin reist durch die Zeit, um die restlichen Mitglieder vor dem Tod (Jung Kook und Suga) oder anderen Ereignissen zu beschützen, damit sie alle nach zwei Jahren wieder zusammenfinden können. Dabei durchlebt er, gefangen in einer Zeitschleife, immer wieder den 11. April 2022. Er kann dieser Schleife nur entkommen, wenn er alle anderen sechs Gruppenmitglieder rettet.[170]
