Redcar les adorables étoiles (prologue) (transl. Redcar the Adorable Stars (Prologue)) is the third studio album by French singer Christine and the Queens, released on 11 November 2022. On the album, Héloïse Letissier adopts the moniker Redcar, just as he adopted the moniker Chris on his previous album, Chris (2018). It is the first album in a series, with the second Redcar album, Paranoïa, Angels, True Love, following on 9 June 2023.[2] It was preceded by the singles "Je te vois enfin", "Rien dire" and "La chanson du chevalier".[3] Christine and the Queens performed two shows at the Cirque d'hiver in Paris in promotion of the album in November 2022, and at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 22 November.[3]
Background
Letissier worked on the album with producer Mike Dean, who contacted him in 2021 and "suggested they collaborate", with Letissier then traveling to Los Angeles to work with Dean.[4] Letissier recorded the album in two weeks,[5] and described it as a rock opera.[6] Letissier adopted the persona of Redcar for the project, with Redcar being described as a "suave figure wearing a red glove".[1] Letissier adopted the name after repeatedly seeing red cars while in Los Angeles in 2020. Following his mother's death in 2019, he took it as a "superstitious sign", explaining: "It was as if an angel was nodding along, sprinkling its magic into my world. It's my choice to live in this strange, beautiful poetry, and Redcar is emblematic of that choice."[7]
The album's release was delayed from 28 September to 11 November 2022 due to Letissier being injured during rehearsals.[4]

On review aggregator Metacritic, the album has a score of 71 out of 100 based on 17 critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception.[8] Heather Phares of AllMusic wrote, "Artistic development and self-discovery are endless journeys, but Redcar les adorables étoiles' vulnerability, confidence, and imagination often feel like a culmination of Christine and the Queens' work. By not forcing Redcar's music into a pop template when it doesn't fit, the album reaffirms him as a resolutely independent artist and makes another fine addition to a nearly flawless discography."[6]
El Hunt of NME described the album as "Cloaked in eerie clouds and lurches of gloomy synthesiser", calling it Letissier's "darkest work musically: though it shares La Vita Nuova's high art leanings, the stage is set differently this time; few of these songs come with soaring choruses". Hunt concluded that "though these are often beautiful and uneasy songs, too many of them feel rudderless".[1] Reviewing the album for Rolling Stone, Kory Grow characterised the record as an "avant-garde pop opera" and felt that Letissier "still pines for romance, sex, and acceptance over sparse pop arrangements" as well as "new-wave synths, muscular bass riffs, and, of course, Chris' breathy, cutting vocals — but he's stretched the nature of the music out into something more progressive with a few dance-floor–ready moments for good measure".[14]
Alexis Petridis of The Guardian opined that the album "largely seem[s] to be breakup songs, with the protagonist very much the injured party" and the listener "start[s] to wonder whether its dejected lyrical tone might not have as much of a bearing on [its] shortcomings as time constraints or bloody-mindedness". He concluded that it shows "flashes of inspiration that ultimately lead to frustration".[5] Writing for Pitchfork, Sophie Kemp described Redcar as a "transitional album", "a frustrating listen from a brilliantly talented artist" and "a very quiet collection of songs with all the weight of ephemera".[12]

Christine and the Queens (* 1. Juni 1988 als Héloïse Letissier in Nantes) ist ein nichtbinärer französischer Singer-Songwriter und Tänzer.
Leben
Er lernte als Kind eines Lehrerehepaars früh Klavier zu spielen. Seinen Tanzunterricht musste er wegen einer Verletzung aufgeben und wandte sich dem Modern Jazz zu. Nach einem Schauspielstudium in Lyon und Paris ging Letissier 2010 nach London, wo er sich mit einer Gruppe singender Dragqueens anfreundete, die ihn zum Singen überredeten.[1][2]
Letissier erklärte 2016 seine Geschlechtsidentität als nichtbinär und seine sexuelle Orientierung als pansexuell.[3][4] Im August 2022 teilte er mit, dass er sich seit circa einem Jahr mit männlichen Pronomen bezeichne und änderte seine in den sozialen Netzwerken zu he/him („er/ihn“).[5][6] Das Hinterfragen der eigenen sexuellen und geschlechtlichen Identität ist ein wiederkehrendes Thema in seinem Werk und spiegelt sich sowohl in den Texten als auch in einigen seiner Musikvideos wider.
Karriere
2011 veröffentlichte er als Christine and the Queens seine erste EP Miséricorde, der 2012 und 2013 zwei weitere folgten. Nuit 17 à 52 von der gleichnamigen dritten EP war 2014 seine erste Single in den französischen Charts auf Platz 75.[7] 2012 trat er im Vorprogramm von Lykke Li, The Dø und Woodkid auf, 2013 mit Lilly Wood & the Prick. 2012 gewann Christine and the Queens die Auszeichnungen „Découverte du Printemps de Bourges“[8] und „Adami Premières Francos 2012“.
Im Juni 2014 erschien sein erstes Album Chaleur humaine, das in Frankreich Platz 2 der Charts erreichte.[7] Das Album erschien Anfang 2015 in Deutschland.[9]
Bei den Victoires de la Musique im Februar 2015 wurde Christine and the Queens zweimal ausgezeichnet, in den Kategorien „Beste Sängerin“ sowie „Bester Videoclip“ für den Clip zum Lied Saint Claude. Er war in fünf Kategorien nominiert.[10]
Musikalischer Stil
Seine Musik mischt das klassische französische Chanson mit modernem Rhythm and Blues, angereichert mit Pop- und minimalistischen Electro-Elementen. Seine Texte wechseln zwischen Englisch und Französisch. Seine Auftritte sind theatralische Performance-Aktionen.[11]
Zu seinen Einflüssen zählt er die amerikanischen Rapper Frank Ocean und Kanye West, die schwedische Sängerin Fever Ray, Beyoncé, den Chansonnier Daniel Balavoine, Michael Jackson, aber auch Lou Reed und das 1972er-Album Ziggy Stardust von David Bowie.[2]
