− ("Subtract") is the sixth studio album by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was released on 5 May 2023 through Asylum and Atlantic Records. A mostly acoustic album, production was handled by Aaron Dessner on every track, alongside Fred Again, Max Martin and Shellback, who all joined him to help produce lead single "Eyes Closed"; while "Boat" and "Life Goes On" served as the respective second and third singles of the album. It was also released as a visual album, with videos for twelve of the album's fourteen tracks ("Eyes Closed" and "Boat"'s videos were already released prior to −) premiering on the album's release date. The album serves as the follow-up to Sheeran's previous album, = (2021), and is his final mathematical-themed album.

The album received generally positive reviews from critics. It debuted at number one in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It also reached the top ten in eleven other countries including United States, Canada, Italy and Spain.

Background

Ed Sheeran announced the album title, tracklist and release date on 1 March 2023 through all social media platforms.[2][3][4] He also announced a mini-European tour from 23 March to 2 April, to complement the release of the album's lead single. It was produced and co-written by Aaron Dessner of the indie rock band the National, who also produced Taylor Swift's albums, Folklore and Evermore, both released in 2020. Sheeran and Dessner wrote over thirty songs together during a month-long studio session, which was eventually cut down to the album's fourteen tracks.[5][6] − serves as the final mathematical-themed album by Sheeran. On 29 April 2023, Sheeran announced a series of private shows in North America as part of a mini tour for the album.[7]

− received a score of 65 out of 100 based on 14 critics' reviews at review aggregator Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable" reception.[9] Alexis Petridis of The Guardian called it "easily his best ever album", an "insular record" on which Sheeran's "crowd-pleasing excesses are nowhere to be seen". Petridis acclaimed Sheeran's work with Aaron Dessner, who provides "atmospheric and beautifully done" as well as "understated string arrangements; twinkling, spectral synthesisers; gentle breezes of feedback and reverb-drenched electric guitars".[12] Neil McCormick of The Telegraph gave the album five out of five stars, describing it as "a fluid, emotional, anxious and atmospheric album of therapeutic self-healing, in which the raw immediacy of Sheeran's feelings takes priority, shaking and warping material in subtle, twisty and deeply personal directions".[19]

Nick Levine of NME wrote that − "definitely feels different. It's doleful and downbeat, melancholy and heartfelt, and doesn't contain anything as crass as 2017's cod-Irish folk song 'Galway Girl'". Levine also found that the album "feels like a warm but cautious hug from a sensitive friend – Dessner gives Sheeran space to say what's on his mind without trying to crowd him", also complimenting Sheeran's lyrics' "striking specificity".[15] Robin Murray of Clash judged the "parallels" to Taylor Swift's Folklore, also produced by Dessner, to be "too neat to miss: removing the gloss, exposing the songwriting underneath, and swapping pop for a more 'serious' artform". Murray wrote that the "results are affecting, but – and this remains Ed Sheeran, after all – not devoid of schmaltz".[11] At Rolling Stone, Maura Johnston said the album is "deliberately arranged, providing solid ground for Sheeran's meditations on a horrific collection of events", while his "lyricism returns to the spotlight, bolstered by finely detailed music that complements his crystalline lyrics and close-confidant delivery."[20] Exclaim! listed the album cover as 10th worst of the year, writing: "the platonic ideal of guy-at-the-party-with-an-acoustic-guitar returns with an image of his own face smeared in what we truly can't believe is not butter. Given how flavourless his music is, we assume it's unsalted."[21]

The Independent's Roisin O'Connor described − as "a departure, of sorts, for the better", on which Dessner brings his "anti-major chord, damper-pedalled piano style", "which in turn harks back to the acoustic-leaning sound of Sheeran's earliest work". O'Connor felt that "Lyrically, the album does fall short, but then Sheeran has spent over a decade trading in vague yet universal issues" although "he's trying his best to open up".[13] Steven Loftin of The Line of Best Fit opined that while the album "doesn't follow [Sheeran's] usual routine", "it certainly doesn't fall far from the tree", and that it "throws into question why he doesn't at least attempt some form of progress" as he "seems happy to play to the masses with his own by-the-book formula that even when it employs the hottest new indie producer, still feels lost".[14] The Observer's noted critic Kitty Empire regards the album as a visceral one dealing with mental health issues in a "coping to not coping" adult way. From The New York Times, Jon Pareles stated "They're sturdy songs, even as Sheeran sings about fragile emotions", whilst "Obviously, Sheeran doesn't worry about verbal clichés — though in these songs, the sorrowful tone makes them sound more unguarded than banal."[22]

Commercial performance

In the UK, − debuted as Sheeran's sixth number one on the UK Albums Chart with 76,000 chart units, becoming the fastest-selling album of 2023 until then. Physical sales constituted 71% of the figure, and it was also the best-selling album on the vinyl format during the week.[23] The album entered at number two on the US Billboard 200 with 112,000 album-equivalent units, including 81,000 pure sales, during its first week. The sales figure outdid any sales week of Sheeran's last two albums and, at the time, marked the 10th-largest sales week of 2023 for any album.[24] In Canada, it peaked at number two.[25]

The album reached number one in Australia.[26] In New Zealand, the album charted at number one.[27] Elsewhere, it peaked at number one in Austria,[28] Belgium,[29] France,[30] Germany,[31] Ireland,[32] the Netherlands,[33] Poland,[34] Scotland,[35] Sweden,[36] and Switzerland.[37]

Edward Christopher „Ed“ Sheeran, MBE[1] (* 17. Februar 1991 in Halifax (West Yorkshire)) ist ein britischer Singer-Songwriter. Er verkaufte bislang über 150 Millionen Tonträger.[2] Seine erfolgreichste Veröffentlichung ist die Single Shape of You, die über 40 Millionen Mal verkauft wurde.[3][4] Daneben arbeitet er auch als Songwriter für andere Künstler, darunter Camila Cabello, Eminem, Justin Bieber, BTS und Rita Ora.

Leben und Karriere

Herkunft und frühe Jahre

Ed Sheeran wurde 1991 in Halifax in der englischen Grafschaft West Yorkshire geboren.[5] Er hat einen älteren Bruder, der als Komponist arbeitet. Sheerans Eltern, John und Imogen Sheeran, stammen aus London; seine Großeltern väterlicherseits sind Iren. Später zog die Familie nach Framlingham in Suffolk, wo er die Thomas Mills High School besuchte. Bereits in jungen Jahren lernte er, Gitarre zu spielen, und in seiner Schulzeit entstanden erste eigene Songs, die von Van Morrison beeinflusst waren.

2005–2013: Erste Erfolge und Durchbruch

Ed Sheeran, 2010

2005 erschien unter dem Titel The Orange Room EP sein erstes Mini-Album. 2006 und 2007 folgten zwei Alben, 2008 siedelte er nach London über und spielte dort in kleinen Clubs. Im selben Jahr nahm Sheeran ohne Erfolg am Casting für die ITV-Sendung Britannia High teil. Nach Veröffentlichung einer weiteren EP, You Need Me, ging Sheeran mit Just Jack auf Tournee. Im Februar 2010 erschien seine EP Loose Change, der Rapper Example lud ihn ein, ihn auf seiner Tour zu begleiten. Im Januar 2011 veröffentlichte Sheeran die EP No. 5 Collaborations Project, auf der Gastmusiker wie Wiley, JME, Devlin und Ghetts zu hören sind. Über iTunes verkaufte sie sich in der ersten Woche über 7000 Mal. Daraufhin erhielt er einen Plattenvertrag bei Atlantic Records. Seine Debütsingle The A Team erschien im Juni 2011 in seiner Heimat Großbritannien und im November in Deutschland,[6] das Debütalbum + (Aussprache: plus) erschien im September 2011 in Großbritannien und im Februar 2012 in Deutschland.[7] Nach einem Auftritt in der Castingshow The Voice of Germany erreichte The A Team Platz 9 der deutschen Singlecharts, das Album stieg gleichzeitig auf Platz 12 der Charts ein.

Bei der Schlussfeier der Olympischen Sommerspiele 2012 in London interpretierte Sheeran im August 2012 zusammen mit Nick Mason von Pink Floyd, Richard Jones (The Feeling) und Mike Rutherford (Genesis) vor einem Millionenpublikum den Pink-Floyd-Song Wish You Were Here.[8] Ebenfalls 2012 erschien Everything Has Changed, das Ed Sheeran zusammen mit Taylor Swift geschrieben und als Duett aufgenommen hat. Der Song wurde auf Swifts Album Red veröffentlicht. 2013 steuerte Sheeran zum Film Der Hobbit: Smaugs Einöde den Titelsong I See Fire bei. Das Stück erreichte in vielen Ländern obere Platzierungen in den Charts.

2014–2018: Studioalben × und ÷

Im Juni 2014 veröffentlichte Sheeran mit × (Aussprache: multiply, dt. mathematische Multiplikation) sein zweites Album. Als erste Single wurde der von Pharrell Williams geschriebene und produzierte Titel Sing im April 2014 vorab veröffentlicht und als Deutschland-Premiere im Finale der Show Germany’s Next Topmodel gespielt. Im August 2014 erschien die zweite Singleauskopplung Don’t, mit der ihm erstmals ein Top-Ten-Hit in den Billboard Hot 100 gelang, das Lied platzierte sich auf Platz 9. Im September 2014 folgte die dritte Single Thinking Out Loud, die sich in den Top-10 platzierte und in den britischen Charts den ersten Platz belegte. Mit der im April 2015 erschienenen Singleauskopplung Photograph gelang ihm der fünfte Top-10-Erfolg als Solokünstler in Deutschland. Für über eine Million verkaufte Einheiten in Deutschland wurde das Lied im November 2020 vom Bundesverband Musikindustrie mit Diamant ausgezeichnet, womit Photograph zu den meistverkauften Singles in Deutschland zählt.

Im Januar 2017 erschienen die Leadsingles Shape of You und Castle on the Hill seines dritten Studioalbums ÷ (Aussprache: divide, dt.: mathematische Division), welches im März 2017 herauskam. Während erstere auf Platz 1 der deutschen Singlecharts einstieg, schaffte Castle on the Hill den Einstieg auf Platz 2. Er ist somit der erste Künstler, der mit zwei Liedern gleichzeitig auf Platz 1 und 2 in den Singlecharts einstieg.[9] Auch in den britischen Singlecharts gelang ihm dies.[10] In Österreich und der Schweiz stiegen die beiden Titel ebenfalls auf Platz 1 bzw. 2 der Singlecharts ein. Das Album wurde in Großbritannien bereits in der ersten Woche über 670.000 Mal verkauft und stellte den Rekord als meistverkauftes Album eines männlichen Künstlers in der ersten Verkaufswoche auf. Während dieses von 0 auf 1 in die offiziellen Charts einstieg, belegten seine Studioalben × und + die Plätze 4 bzw. 5.[11] Zudem wurde er der erste Interpret, der gleichzeitig die ersten fünf Positionen der britischen Singlecharts besetzen konnte. Insgesamt platzierten sich am 10. März neun Titel aus dem Album in den Top 10, sieben weitere erreichten die Top 20.[12] In den deutschen Charts stellte Sheeran mit sechs Top-20-Platzierungen ebenfalls einen neuen Rekord auf, zudem konnten sich auch dort alle 16 Titel gleichzeitig in den Charts platzieren,[13] ebenso in Österreich.[14] Trotz vier Nominierungen gewann er bei den Brit Awards 2018 in keiner der Hauptkategorien; für seinen besonderen weltweiten Erfolg erhielt er jedoch eine Sonderauszeichnung.

Am 7. Dezember 2017 wurde Sheeran von Prinz Charles die Auszeichnung zum Member des Order of the British Empire verliehen.[15]

Seit 2019: Divide Tour und weitere Studioalben

2019 gelang es Sheeran, mit seiner seit 2017 andauernden Divide Tour zwei weitere Rekorde zu brechen. Sie war bereits vor ihrem Ende sowohl die kommerziell erfolgreichste Tournee (mit über 737 Millionen US-Dollar) als auch die mit den meisten Besuchern (über 7,3 Millionen). Er löste damit die Band U2 als Rekordhalter ab.[16] Im Juli 2019 erschien mit No. 6 Collaborations Project sein viertes Studioalbum, auf der er alle Titel mit befreundeten Musikerkollegen wie Khalid, Camila Cabello, Justin Bieber, Eminem und Bruno Mars gemeinsam aufnahm.

Am 25. Juni 2021 erschien die Leadsingle Bad Habits zu seinem fünften Studioalbum = (Aussprache: equals, dt.: mathematisches Gleichheitszeichen), welches Ende Oktober 2021 veröffentlicht wurde. Das Album platzierte sich weltweit auf Platz 1, in Deutschland und Österreich erlangte es Goldstatus. Im Dezember 2021 koppelte er mit Merry Christmas ein gemeinsames Weihnachtslied mit Elton John aus, dessen Erlös an die Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation und der Elton John AIDS Foundation überging.[17] Im Februar 2022 erschien mit The Joker And The Queen ein viertes Duett mit Taylor Swift.[18]

Sheeran begann im März 2022 seine einjährige +−=÷×-Tour (Aussprache Mathematics Tour).[19] Im Juni 2022 interpretierte er beim Platin-Thronjubiläum von Elisabeth II. sein Lied Perfect.[20] Im März 2023 erschien die Lead-Single Eyes Closed, die von Max Martin, Shellback und Fred Again geschrieben und produziert wurde und die ein weiterer Nummer-eins-Hit in den britischen Charts für Sheeran wurde. Anfang Mai 2023 kam sein sechstes Studioalbum - (Aussprache: subtract, dt.: mathematisches Minuszeichen) heraus, das sich in D-A-CH und in den britischen Charts, wo es in wenigen Wochen Goldstatus erreichte, erneut auf Platz 1 platzieren konnte.[21][22]

Sheeran kündigte die Veröffentlichung seines siebten Studioalbums mit dem Titel Autumn Variations für den 29. September 2023 an.[23]

Film und Fernsehen

Seit Beginn seiner Karriere als Musiker hat Sheeran regelmäßig Gastauftritte in Film und Fernsehen. 2015 sah man ihn in einer Folge der Sitcom Undateable, im selben Jahr in fünf Folgen von The Bastard Executioner in der Rolle von Sir Cormac und im Sommer 2017 in einer Folge von Game of Thrones. Sich selbst spielte er u. a. 2016 in Sharon Maguires Filmkomödie Bridget Jones’ Baby, 2019 in der britischen Musikkomödie Yesterday und im November 2021 in der Actionkomödie Red Notice von Rawson Marshall Thurber.

Privates

Ed Sheeran verlobte sich zum Jahresende 2017 und kündigte an, seine langjährige Freundin Cherry Seaborn 2018 zu heiraten.[24] Am 22. Dezember 2019 allerdings gab er in seinem neuen Musikvideo zu Put It All On Me an, dass er Cherry erst im Januar 2019 geheiratet habe.[25] Das Paar hat zwei gemeinsame Töchter.[26][27]
