FTHC (initialism for Frank Turner Hardcore) is the ninth studio album by English singer-songwriter Frank Turner, released on 11 February 2022.[1]

Background and production

After tour plans for the rest of 2020 were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown measures, Turner engaged in a weekly series of acoustic livestreams from his home which he called "Independent Venue Love", the goal of which was to raise money for grassroots venues that were struggling due to the lack of patronage caused by the pandemic and lockdown.[2] During these streams, he began performing new material alongside his previously released back catalogue. Among these was "The Gathering", a track about longing for the return of live music that would later go on to be released as the album's lead single in May 2021.

Turner continued to debut new material during the livestreams[3] and as UK restrictions began to relax in the summer of 2020, he entered the Abbey Recording Studio in Oxford and began recording FTHC with Rich Costey, who handled production and mixing duties remotely.[1] Drummer Nigel Powell's departure from Turner's backing band The Sleeping Souls in October 2020[4] lead to him utilising guest musicians on the drums, with Muse drummer Dominic Howard featuring on "The Gathering", alongside a guitar solo from Jason Isbell.[5] The vast majority of the drumming on the rest of the album was handled by Ilan Rubin of Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves,[6] while Death Cab for Cutie drummer Jason McGerr and Kevin Fennell of Guided by Voices feature on "A Wave Across a Bay" and "Little Life" respectively.

Upon announcing the album, Turner said that after Be More Kind's foray into "electronic music" and the "history folk" stylings of No Man's Land, he wanted to "restate his purpose as an artist" and "blow the cobwebs away". He described the album as a more "direct and raw" and "sonically aggressive" exploration of his personal issues that was "built [to be played] live."[7]

Following its release as a single in November 2021, Turner revealed the origins of the song "Miranda", which tells the story of how his father had transitioned and was now living as a transgender woman. The track's lyrics discuss his and Miranda's previously tumultuous relationship and how they began to reconcile following her transition, with Turner stating in an interview with The Guardian that "Miranda is a really nice person – my dad wasn't."[8]

Release and promotion

"The Gathering" was released as the record's lead single on 6 May 2021 and coincided with the announcement of a run of summer shows between June and September 2021 known as "The Gathering: Summer 2021".[5] The record's second single "Haven't Been Doing So Well" was released on 16 September 2021, alongside the announcement of the album and its track listing.

The album's opening track, "Non Serviam", was released as the record's third single on 29 October 2021,[9] with "Miranda" following as the album's fourth single on 26 November 2021.[10] A fifth single, "A Wave Across a Bay", a tribute to his friend Scott Hutchison from the band Frightened Rabbit, was released on 12 January 2022. A final single, "The Resurrectionists", was released a week before the album on 4 February 2022.

Tour

A tour of the UK in support of the record named "The Never Ending Tour of Everywhere" was announced, originally scheduled to begin in January 2022.[1] However, rising COVID-19 cases in the UK following the emergence of the Omicron variant lead to the UK and Scotland dates of the tour being delayed until September and October 2022 over health concerns for the crew and audience, with the tour instead beginning in Belfast on 8 April 2022.[11] [12]

Turner then embarked on a series of intimate acoustic album launch shows throughout the UK between March and April 2022,[13] followed by a tour of the United States in support of the album entitled "50 States in 50 Days" with The Sleeping Souls between June and August 2022.[14] On 13 October 2022, The tour was extended into 2023, with a second leg of UK dates in January and February, followed by the announcement of a third leg of European shows and festival appearances throughout the summer.[15][16]

Francis Edward "Frank" Turner (* 28. Dezember 1981 in Muharraq, Bahrain) ist ein britischer Musiker.

Persönlicher Werdegang

Aufgewachsen in Winchester, England, besuchte Turner im Rahmen eines Stipendiums das Eton College.[1] Im Anschluss daran studierte er an der London School of Economics, an der er einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Europäischer Geschichte machte.

Turner heiratete am 7. August 2019 seine langjährige Partnerin Jessica Guise, nachdem sich die beiden im August 2018 verlobt hatten. Guise ist Schauspielerin und Sängerin.[2]

Musikalischer Werdegang

Kneejerk und Million Dead

Das erste Musikalbum, das Turner besaß, war das Album Killers der Band Iron Maiden. So war Metal das erste Musikgenre, das eine große Rolle für ihn spielte. Bis heute ist er ein Fan dieses Genres.[3] Seine musikalische Karriere begann zu Schulzeiten mit der für kurze Zeit bestehenden Band Kneejerk. Die Band veröffentlichte drei Musikträger und spielte einige Konzerte im Vereinigten Königreich. Ihre letzte Aufnahme und einzige Langspielplatte trägt den Titel The Half LIfe of Kissing und wurde über das DIY-Hardcore-Label Sakari Empire aus Yorkshire veröffentlicht. Im Anschluss daran löste sich die Band auf.[4]

Auf die Einladung des ehemaligen Kneejerk Schlagzeugers Ben Dawson hin stieß Turner 2001 zur Londoner Post-Hardcore-Band Million Dead hinzu.[5] 2005, vier Jahre und zwei Alben später, kündigte die Band ihre Auflösung an, da unüberbrückbare Differenzen innerhalb der Band eine Fortsetzung unmöglich machen würden.[6]

Solokarriere

Seit dem Ende der Band im Jahr 2005 ist Turner solo als Singer-Songwriter tätig, dessen Musik deutliche Einflüsse aus Folk-Rock und Punk besitzt. Sein erstes Album Sleep Is for the Week erschien im Januar 2007 im Vereinigten Königreich und wurde in der dortigen Musikpresse überwiegend positiv wahrgenommen. Dessen Nachfolger Love Ire & Song wurde im März 2008 veröffentlicht und erschien im Sommer 2009 als Re-release auch im deutschen Sprachraum. Ersten größeren kommerziellen Erfolg erzielte er mit dem im Dezember 2008 veröffentlichten Album The First Three Years, einer Zusammenstellung der Songs von Singles und EPs aus Turners ersten Solojahren, das Platz 72 in den britischen Albumcharts erreichte. Auch sein drittes Studioalbum Poetry of the Deed, das im September 2009 veröffentlicht wurde, erreichte die britische Hitparade und konnte dort bis auf Platz 36 vorstoßen. Ende 2010 erschien eine EP mit dem Titel Rock & Roll; im Juni 2011 das Album England Keep My Bones, das Rang 12 der britischen Charts erreichte. Später im Jahr wurde eine zweite Sammlung von Singles und B-Seiten namens The Second Three Years veröffentlicht. Am 27. Juli 2012 trat Turner mit seiner Band bei der Eröffnungsfeier der Olympischen Sommerspiele 2012 im Olympiastadion London vor circa 80.000 Zuschauern und einem weltweiten TV-Publikum auf. Im April 2013 erschien sein fünftes Studio-Album Tape Deck Heart, welches von Rich Costey produziert und erstmal außerhalb des Vereinigten Königreichs (nämlich in Kalifornien) eingespielt wurde. Das Album stellt bis dato seinen größten kommerziellen Erfolg dar und erreichte neben Platz 2 in Großbritannien auch die Charts in weiteren europäischen Ländern sowie den Vereinigten Staaten.

Am 10. Februar 2017 veröffentlichte Turner eine Live-Version eines bis dahin noch unveröffentlichten Songs namens The Sand In The Gears. Die Aufnahme wurde einen Monat zuvor am 19. Januar 2017 im Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland aufgenommen. Es ist Turners erster politischer Song seit mehr als zehn Jahren und kann als Antwort auf die Wahl von Donald Trumps als Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika verstanden werden. Neun Monate später, am 24. November 2017 erscheint mit Songbook eine Art Best-Of-Album, in der der Künstler sowohl alte Songs zusammenstellt, sowie neue Arrangements bereits veröffentlichter Stücke. Der einzige bis dato unveröffentlichte Song auf ebendieser Zusammenstellung ist "There She Is". Am 27. Januar 2018 kündigte Turner an, das sein siebtes Studioalbum "Be More Kind" lauten würde und veröffentlichte im gleiche Zuge das Lied '1933', Am 16. März wurde die erste offizielle Single des Albums 'Blackout' veröffentlicht. Be More Kind wurde im Studio Niles City Sound in Fort Worth, Texas aufgenommen und erschien weltweit am 4. Mai 2018.

Die 13 Songs seines achten Studio-Albums No Man’s Land (2019) widmete Turner außergewöhnlichen Frauenpersönlichkeiten wie Rosetta Tharpe, Hudā Schaʿrāwī, Mata Hari und Christa McAuliffe.[7] Das Album wurde von der Australierin Catherine Marks produziert.[8]

The Sleeping Souls

In der Regel spielt Turner seine Konzerte mit seiner Band The Sleeping Souls, die aus Ben Lloyd (Gitarre), Matt Nasir (Keyboard, Mandoline), Tarrant Anderson (Bass) sowie Callum Green (Schlagzeug) besteht.[9] Vereinzelt tritt er auch solo oder zusammen mit Multi-Instrumentalist Matt Nasir als Duo auf.

Nebenprojekte

Ein Nebenprojekt von Frank Turner nennt sich "Möngöl Hörde" – eine Hardcore-Punk-Band bestehend aus Matt Nasir (Gitarre) und Ben Dawson (Schlagzeug). Seit dem Erscheinen des gleichnamigen Studioalbums 2014 tritt die Formation hin und wieder live auf. Auf Wunsch Turners werden das Projekt und das Album nicht werbewirksam vermarktet.[10]

Während des Corona-Lockdowns richtete sich Frank Turner unter anderem ein eigenes Musik-Studio ein, in dem er als Arrangeur sowie Produzent für andere Musiker in Erscheinung tritt.[11] Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch das Projekt um die Band Heavy Meds, in der Turner als Gitarrist, Background-Sänger sowie als Produzent in Erscheinung trifft. Die Band veröffentlichte im September 2021 die EP "Homebody" mit vier Stücken.[12]
