Generation X is the first studio album by English punk rock band Generation X,[7] produced by Martin Rushent, it was released in the United Kingdom on 17 March 1978.[8][9]
Production
Generation X was recorded at TW Studios in Fulham, West London, during November–December 1977, with the producer Martin Rushent and the engineer Alan Winstanley.[10]
The band had previously worked with the producer Phil Wainman on prior singles, but had been dissatisfied with the results, critiquing his production as too "poppy" and polished, and sought a recorded sound for the album that resembled the band's live performances. Frontman Billy Idol suggested Rushent for the role as he had been impressed with his recent work with The Stranglers.[11] Guitarist Derwood Andrews later recalled, "Martin Rushent told great jokes, but his engineer Alan Winstanley was more responsible for the sound of the album".[12]
The album was recorded during one week, with many of the songs being completed in one take. Bassist Tony James wrote most of the lyrics, with Idol composing the music. Andrews and drummer Mark Laff finished the songs by adding instrumental parts.[13]
"We (recorded) it in TW (Studios), and it was like recording in a garage, it was such a shithole. But it was great as we felt completely at home, we just plugged in and played great and it sounded great. ... 'Youth Youth Youth' was done in one take, we just set Derwood up with a wall of speakers in the studio, no headphones and just left the tape running. We were pissed, and did it at midnight, that's the only way we could have possibly recorded that track. He just went mad, we just all sat there in awe as he went crazy (playing that solo)."[14] − Tony James
Charts
On commercial release in the United Kingdom in March 1978 the album reached #29 in the Albums Chart.
Single releases
The song "Ready Steady Go" was issued as a single in February 1978 prior to the album's release, peaking at #47 in the United Kingdom's Singles Chart.

Release formats
The original U.S. release of the album featured a variant track listing, omitting three songs and adding three songs from the band's singles releases, with the addition of a cover of John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth".[15]
The album was later remastered and reissued in 2002 with the original UK track listing, augmented by six bonus tracks from singles.
Two outtakes recorded during the TW Studios sessions for Generation X, "Your Generation" and "Rock On", were retrospectively commercially issued on the 2004 K.M.D - Sweet Revenge Xtra album.
The album was re-issued internationally on 26 April 2019 as a part of a 2-CD/3-LP Deluxe collector's set, re-mastered by its original engineer Alan Winstanley.[16] The bonus CD/two bonus LPs featured a-side and b-sides tracks from singles, outtakes, and previously unreleased mixes.

Generation X, zeitweise auch Gen X, war eine britische Punkband, die 1976 von Billy Idol gegründet wurde, im selben Jahr ihr Debüt feierte, 1977 ihre erste Single und 1978 ihr erstes Album herausbrachte. 1981 löste sie sich noch vor dem Erscheinen ihres dritten Albums auf.
Bandgeschichte
Im August 1976 suchte Gene October mit einer Anzeige im Melody Maker nach Musikern für eine Band. Es meldeten sich William Broad, der später als Billy Idol berühmt wurde, Tony James und John Towe. Sie gründeten eine Band namens Chelsea. Nach drei Monaten und ebenso vielen Konzerten trennte sich die Gruppe wieder. Während October nach neuen Mitglieder suchte, gründeten Broad, James und Towe mit dem Gitarristen Bob Andrews Generation X, in der sich Billy Idol als Sänger versuchte.
Im Dezember feierten sie ihr Debüt im Roxy Club in London. Kurz darauf wurde John Towe durch Mark Laff ersetzt.
Im Juli 1977 unterschrieb Generation X einen Vertrag bei Chrysalis und ihre erste Single Your Generation erschien. Es folgten die Singles Wild Youth (1977) und Ready Steady Go (1978). 1978 erschienen die beiden Alben Generation X und Valley of the Dolls. Die Singleauskopplung King Rocker erreichte Platz 11 der britischen Charts.
Es folgte die Umbenennung in Gen X. In der Band gab es Streit und Laff und Andrews wurden durch Terry Chimes und Chelsea-Mitglied James Stephenson ersetzt. Als Gitarristen dienten Steve Jones von den Sex Pistols und John McGeoch von Magazine. Als 1981 das dritte Album erschien, existierte die Band schon nicht mehr.
Billy Idol startete in den USA eine sehr erfolgreiche Solokarriere, Tony James gründete die Band Sigue Sigue Sputnik und später zusammen mit Mick Jones die Gruppe Carbon/Silicon. Terry Chimes ersetzte den Schlagzeuger von The Clash.
Stil
Generation X gelten zwar als eine der ersten Punkbands, tendierten später aber eher zum melodiösen Rock ’n’ Roll und Pop.
Wirkung
Die britische Punkband Penetration spielt 1977 als Vorgruppe der Generation X. Diese Auftritte verschaffen ihr einen gewissen Bekanntschaftsgrad auch über die Szene hinaus.
2001 gibt Billy Idol bei VH-1 Storytellers, dem Gegenstück zu MTV Unplugged, nochmal Generation X-Klassiker wie Kiss Me Deadly, Untouchables und Ready Steady Go zum Besten, was ihm einen neuen Aufschwung seiner Karriere bescherte.
Sonstiges
Der britische Schriftsteller Hanif Kureishi verarbeitete die Figur seines Schulfreunds Billy Idol und die Geschichte der Band Generation X in seinem Roman Der Buddha aus der Vorstadt (The Buddha of Suburbia, 1990), der auch verfilmt wurde.
Als Generation X wurde in den 1990er Jahren auch die Generation der in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren Geborenen bezeichnet, nach dem Buch von Douglas Coupland.
