Go West is the debut studio album by the English pop duo Go West, released in April 1985 by Chrysalis Records. The album brought the band into the limelight, scoring them a string of top 40 hits in the UK and New Zealand. "We Close Our Eyes" was the most successful single, reaching No. 4 in New Zealand and No. 5 in the UK. The album itself reached No. 8 in the UK.[4]

A super deluxe edition was released on 6 May 2022 packaged as a 4 CD+DVD box set, newly remastered by original producer Gary Stevenson from the original production tapes. It features the original album, a slightly expanded version of the remix album Bangs & Crashes (1986), demos and rarities (including additional remixes), an unreleased live performance from Hammersmith Odeon on 21 November 1985, a DVD featuring all promo clips for the singles of the album, a never before seen 1985 live performance from Yokohama, Japan and various live television appearances.[5]

Background

Go West, formed in London by Peter Cox and Richard Drummie, had been writing songs for the album since 1982. Two songs featured on the album, "We Close Our Eyes" and "Call Me", helped them land a record deal with Chrysalis Records.

The album features more top 40 UK/New Zealand hits than any other albums and helped them to be voted Best Newcomers at the 1986 Brit Awards.

The song "Goodbye Girl" was featured in the first episode of the second season of the 1980s TV series Miami Vice.

The song "Call Me" is included on the soundtrack for the popular 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, on the fictional in-game radio station "Flash FM" and on the official soundtrack release.[6]

Go West wurde 1982 von Peter Cox und Richard Drummie gegründet.

Die Debütsingle We Close Our Eyes wurde 1985 veröffentlicht. Das Lied stieg in die deutschen und Schweizer Top 20 sowie in die englischen Top 10 und ist bis heute die erfolgreichste Go-West-Single in Europa. Das zugehörige Album Go West wurde in Großbritannien mit Doppelplatin ausgezeichnet. Bei den BPI Awards 1986 wurde das Duo als „British Breakthrough Act“ geehrt.[1]

Bis 1987 folgte eine Reihe von Singles, die sich größtenteils auf mittleren Positionen der englischen und/oder amerikanischen Charts platzieren konnten. Lediglich Call Me (1985) und Don’t Look Down – The Sequel stachen hervor und erreichten die Top 20 der UK-Charts.

Nach einer längeren Pause hatte Go West 1990 mit der Single The King of Wishful Thinking vom Soundtrack zum Film Pretty Woman einen Top-10-Hit in den Vereinigten Staaten, was das Lied zum größten Hit der Band in Amerika machte. In der britischen Heimat erklomm der Titel eine Top-20-Position, in Deutschland reichte es nur knapp für die Top 50.

Mit den Singles Faithful (1992) und What You Won’t Do for Love (1993), beide vom goldprämierten Album Indian Summer, konnte Go West an diesen Erfolg anknüpfen. Zum letzten Top-20-Hit in Großbritannien wurde 1993 Tracks of My Tears, ein Lied vom Album Aces and Kings: The Best Of, das die Top 10 der britischen Singlecharts erreichte und mit einer Goldenen Schallplatte ausgezeichnet wurde.
