Streetcleaner: Live at Roadburn 2011 is the first live album from English industrial metal band Godflesh. The release (which consists of the entirety of Godflesh's 1989 studio album Streetcleaner performed live) was recorded on 14 April 2011 at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands.[1] Apart from being the group's debut live album, it was also the first time they played Streetcleaner in its entirety.[2]
This performance marks the first of three times Godflesh played an entire album live at Roadburn. In 2013, the band performed their 1992 album Pure,[3] and in 2018 the band performed their 1994 album Selfless.[4]
The performance
Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick believed that this performance was "the most coherent version of Streetcleaner ever played."[5] The Quietus writer Jamie Thomson said this about the performance: "As [Godflesh] pummeled their way through a complete performance of Streetcleaner in the main theatre, the jackhammer drum machine and guitar crunch invoked more of a physical rather than emotional response – that response being: 'Ouch'."[6] Thomson later wrote "Rather than being dwarfed by the occasion, the image of Justin Broadrick and G. C. Green stood alone on the giant stage reflected perfectly their stark, tormented sound."[6]
While many of the original Streetcleaner tracks were recorded with the aid of a second guitarist, Paul Neville,[7] Godflesh remained a duo for the 2011 performance at Roadburn. In a mixed review of the performance, Ezekiel Rodofili with Cooltry highlighted this discrepancy, writing that the synth employed to replace Neville "wasn't quite up to the task."[8] Regardless, Rodofili went on to praise the way Broadrick and Green played, especially focusing on the importance of Green's bass, and summarizing by saying "Streetcleaner: Live at Roadburn 2011 is decent, if a little uneven."[8] Vince Bellino of Decibel was more positive, saying that Streetcleaner is brought to life in a way different from the studio recordings and writing, "The songs are more dissonant and, at times, cacophonous, a powerful incarnation of the record more than 20 years after its release."[9]
Release
Streetcleaner: Live at Roadburn 2011 was initially released as a limited vinyl pressing on 18 April 2013, available in black with 400 copies and in red with 100 copies.[10] This version of the release divides the tracks "Devastator" and Mighty Trust Krusher", whereas the following releases combine them. The album only saw full digital distribution on 4 April 2017. On 1 November 2017, the album was released on CD in digipak format and was limited to 1,000 copies.[2] Both the digital and CD versions run six minutes longer than the original vinyl release.

Godflesh ist eine britische Band.
Geschichte
Godflesh wurde 1988 in Birmingham von Justin Broadrick und G. C. Green gegründet, die schon seit Justins 14. Lebensjahr gemeinsam Musik machten. Nach einigen Vorläufer-Projekten – Broadrick spielte anfangs bei Fall of Because und Napalm Death und wechselte anschließend zu Head of David – entstand Godflesh.
Die Band wurde stark von Gruppen wie den Swans, frühen Killing Joke, Black Sabbath und Throbbing Gristle beeinflusst. Godflesh griffen den schleppenden Noise-Rock-Stil der Swans und Broadricks Vorgänger-Band Head of David auf und erweiterten diesen um metal-lastige Gitarrenklänge und Elemente des Post-Industrial, was sich insbesondere durch die Hinzunahme von Sound- und Stimmeffekten und eines Drumcomputers äußerte. Dementsprechend zählte man Godflesh mit ihren Frühwerken Streetcleaner (1989) und Slavestate (1991) zum Industrial Metal. Speziell Streetcleaner gilt als einer der Wegbereiter des Genres.
Jedes ihrer Alben ist sehr verschieden gegenüber den übrigen Veröffentlichungen. Während man in älteren Alben auch Grindcore-Einflüsse hören kann, sind die späteren Werke permanenten Veränderungen unterworfen. Ab dem 1992er Album Pure verzichtete die Band weitgehend auf Post-Industrial-Elemente. Seit dieser Abkehr vom Industrial Metal widmete sie sich einer Stilistik, die sich mit dem US-amerikanischen Sludge-Sound vergleichen lässt. Ab 1996 experimentierte sie vermehrt mit Elementen des Hip-Hop, Dub und Breakbeat/Drum and Bass und veröffentlichte die Werke Songs of Love and Hate, Love and Hate in Dub und Us and Them.
„Techno und Hip Hop ist unserer Meinung nach die einzige moderne Musik, die sich mit dem Jetzt, der Zukunft und dem darüber Hinausgehenden befasst, während sogenannte moderne Rock- und Popmusik ausschließlich von der Vergangenheit vereinnahmt ist. Es gibt kaum noch Rock mit wirklicher Brutalität. Die finde ich heute eher in den Protesten des Hip Hop, und das schon seit einigen Jahren. Aus diesem Grund arbeiten wir auch mit dem Schlagzeuger Brian Mantia, weil wir genau diese Art von Groove für ‚Songs of Love and Hate‘ haben wollten.“
Mit dem 2001 veröffentlichten Album Hymns kehrte sie zu den Sludge-Klängen der Alben Selfless und Pure zurück.
Justin Broadrick unterhielt auch während seiner Arbeiten mit Godflesh viele Nebenprojekte wie z. B. Final, God, Ice, Techno Animal u. a. Nach dem letzten Album und einem Wechsel zu einer neuen Plattenfirma verließ G. C. Green die Band, und Justin Broadrick verkündete 2002 das Ende von Godflesh. Broadrick gründete noch vor dem Aus von Godflesh im Jahr 2001 die Post-Metal und Post-Rock-Band Jesu. Seit einem Auftritt auf dem Hellfest im Sommer 2010 sind Godflesh wieder aktiv.[2]
Insbesondere mit ihrem Frühwerk beeinflussten Godflesh zahlreiche andere Metal-/Crossover-Bands, wie Fear Factory, Neurosis und Isis.
