L'Enfant Sauvage (French for "The Wild Child") is the fifth studio album and major label debut by French heavy metal band Gojira. It was released 26 June 2012 via Roadrunner Records.[1]

Background

Gojira was going to tour with Lamb of God and Dethklok, but because of Randy Blythe's arrest in the Czech Republic, the tour was cancelled.[2] Gojira subsequently announced a headline tour of their own, which began in January 2013 with support from The Devin Townsend Project and The Atlas Moth.[3]

Writing and composition

The composition and pre-production of L'Enfant Sauvage were materialized in the southwest of France (Le Studio des Milans).[4] Gojira opted for more "power" and density of sound and emphasized more "epicness" in the structures of the songs.[5] It was co-produced and recorded by Josh Wilbur and Joe Duplantier in New York.[5][4]

L'Enfant Sauvage is partly inspired by François Truffaut's film of the same name,[6] which tells the true story of Victor of Aveyron, a child who was found alone in the woods with behaviors closer to a wild animal than a civilized human. "We are part of this world. And also there is this idea that an enfant sauvage, a child that grew up in nature, is not confronted with others, with emotions, with guilt and identity, so it would be a state where you are closer to the essence of things."

Frontman, guitarist, and songwriter Joe Duplantier spoke about the meaning of the album by saying, "When you become a musician, you don't have a boss telling you what to do so you have to be very responsible." He goes on to say "With freedom comes responsibility, so I'm asking myself, 'What is freedom? What does it mean to me?' L'Enfant Sauvage reflects on that. There's no answer though. There's just life and questions."[7]

Duplantier expanded on this idea in an interview with The Quietus, explaining that "Since the beginning, since the very first demo even, I've been obsessed with the human condition, the soul, why we are here and is there an answer to that question - the mysteries of life in general. Are we a body? Or are we more than that? And if we are more, then what are we? I'm full of questions, but there are no answers really, just intuition, and a strong intuition that we are more than just flesh and blood".

The song "The Gift of Guilt" was a reflection of Joe Duplantier on the theme of guilt, passed down from generation to generation.[6]

During the recording of the album, Joe Duplantier became a father. "It's a trip man, it's amazing. Of course I'm very influenced by what happened and talking about birth and becoming a dad is not completely disconnected, it's relevant in a way, but everything is influencing me when I'm writing."[8]

Touring and promotion

On 30 April 2012, the band performed a new song for the forthcoming album, the title track "L'Enfant Sauvage", at Rockstore in Montpellier.[9] Music and lyric videos have been released for five songs off the album: "Explosia",[10] "L'Enfant Sauvage",[11] "The Axe",[12] "Liquid Fire",[13] and "Born in Winter".[14]

The band toured North America in support of the album with the Devin Townsend Project and The Atlas Moth in 2013, and also launched a worldwide tour.[3][15] In March 2014 the band released a DVD/CD live album of their performance at the Brixton Academy in London on 24 March 2013 entitled Les Enfants Sauvages through Roadrunner.[16][17] It also featured a 60-page hardcover book featuring photographs of the band taken around the world in the course of the last few years of their touring, spanning over 150 shows.[16]

L'Enfant Sauvage was met with universal acclaim from music critics. On Metacritic, based on 10 reviews, the album has received a score of 86/100, which indicates "universal acclaim".[18]

Writing for the BBC, Raziq Rauf wrote that "This is as flawless an extreme metal album as you'll hear, in 2012 or any other year", adding that "Gojira is one of the finest bands of our generation, and with L'Enfant Sauvage they've created another album to suit such a reputation." In his review of the album for The Guardian, Dom Lawson gave the album a perfect rating, writing that "Their fifth studio album sustains their trademark blend of unfathomable heaviness, structural invention and ecological-cum-existential poetry while subtly enhancing its dramatic and emotional impact", concluding that "overall this is a ferociously original piece of work that reaches its electrifying zenith on The Gift of Guilt: six minutes of sledgehammer sorrow built from riffs that sound like warning shots fired from the planet's doomed and turbulent core. This is metal taken to a higher plane of brilliance."

Commercial performance

The album sold almost over 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 34 on The Billboard 200 chart. In comparison, the band's previous CD, The Way of All Flesh, opened with 4,200 units back in 2008 to land at No. 138. It also reached No. 17 digitally in France.[35]

It peaked at No. 6 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart and No. 13 on the Top Rock Albums chart.[36]

Gojira (ehemals „Godzilla“) ist eine französische Metal-Band. Die Band wurde 1996 in der Stadt Bayonne gegründet.[1] Der Name stammt vom japanischen Originaltitel des 1950er-Jahre-Films Godzilla (japanisch ゴジラ Gojira). Gojiras Texte haben meist die Erde und Umwelt zum Inhalt und sind spirituell geprägt.[2]

Geschichte

Die Band wurde im Jahr 1996 von Sänger und Gitarrist Joseph Duplantier, seinem Bruder Mario Duplantier, der Schlagzeug spielt und Gitarrist Christian Andreu gegründet. Unter dem Namen „Godzilla“ spielten sie einige Demos ein, die noch sehr eindeutig dem Death Metal zuzuordnen waren.[3] Aus rechtlichen Gründen änderte man kurz vor Veröffentlichung ihres 2001 erschienenen Debütalbums Terra Incognita (lateinisch für „unbekanntes Land“) den Bandnamen in „Gojira“, mit Jean-Michel Labadie war ein neuer Bassist zur Band gestoßen.

Nachdem im Jahr 2003 ihr zweites Album The Link (englisch für „Die Verbindung“) erschienen war, wurden diverse Konzerte aufgenommen und im Rahmen einer DVD mit dem Namen The Link Alive veröffentlicht. Diese beiden Publikationen brachten ihnen einen Plattenvertrag mit dem französischen Label Listenable Records ein, welches ihr drittes Album From Mars to Sirius (englisch für „Vom Mars zum Sirius“) in Europa auf den Markt brachten. Die guten Kritiken der internationalen Fachpresse ebneten den Weg zu einem Vertrag mit dem US-amerikanischen Label Prosthetic Records, die ihr Album 2006 in Nordamerika erneut veröffentlichten. Im November desselben Jahres nahm Gojira an der US-Tour der finnischen Band Children of Bodom teil und spielte somit gemeinsam mit Amon Amarth und Sanctity.[4] Im Frühjahr 2007 spielte die Band als Vorband für Lamb of God gemeinsam mit Trivium, Annihilator und Sanctity.[5] Am Ende des Jahres tourte Gojira außerdem mit Behemoth und Job for a Cowboy.[6]

Anfang 2008 stieg Joseph Duplantier in die brasilianische Band Cavalera Conspiracy ein und wirkte auf ihrem ersten Album Inflikted als Bassist mit. Gojiras viertes Studioalbum The Way of All Flesh (englisch für Der Weg allen Fleisches) wurde am 10. Oktober 2008 veröffentlicht. Als Gastmusiker wirkte der Lamb-of-God-Sänger Randy Blythe mit.[7] Über das Album sagt Sänger Duplantier:

“This album is also a ‘requiem’ for our planet. […] We don’t want to be negative or cynical about the fate of humanity, but the situation on Earth is growing critical, and the way humans behave is so catastrophic that we really need to express our exasperation about it. It’s not fear, but anger. But we still believe that consciousness can make a difference and that we can change things as human beings.”

Ab Herbst 2008 spielte Gojira gemeinsam mit Sonic Syndicate als Vorband für In Flames auf ihrer Europa- und US-Tournee.[8] Im Frühjahr 2009 schloss sich die erste Headliner-Tour der Bandgeschichte an.

Im Jahr 2010 arbeiteten sie erstmals mit der Band Apocalyptica zusammen, woraufhin das Lied Bring Them to Light produziert wurde.

Das 2016 erschienene Studioalbum Magma ist die überhaupt erste Veröffentlichung einer französischen Band, die den ersten Platz der Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums erzielen konnte.[3] Später folgten zwei Grammy-Nominierungen – zum einen für das Studioalbum in der Kategorie „Best Rock Album“, zum anderen für die Single Silvera im Bereich „Best Metal Performance“.[9]

Ab Ende 2019 nahm Gojira im bandeigenen Silver Cord Studio in New York ein weiteres Album auf. Im August 2020 gab es mit einem Musikvideo zum Song Another World einen ersten Ausblick auf das neue Material,[10] am 17. Februar 2021 erschien die Vorab-Single Born For One Thing. Das siebte Studioalbum trägt den Titel Fortitude und erschien am 30. April desselben Jahres.[3]

Stil

Gojira verwenden in ihrer Musik eine große Bandbreite von Stilen,[11] dabei spielen insbesondere Death Metal / Technical Death Metal,[12] Thrash Metal,[13] Progressive Metal[14] und Groove Metal eine große Rolle. Sie werden daher gelegentlich mit Bands wie Meshuggah, Mastodon, Sepultura, Neurosis oder Morbid Angel verglichen.[13][14][15][16] Musikalische Einflüsse von Gojira liegen bei verschiedenen Bands wie Death, Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Metallica, Tool und Neurosis.[16][17]

Die Band spielt einen technisch ausgefeilten, rhythmischen Metalstil mit präzisem Drumming, ungewöhnlichen Rhythmen, abgehackten „Start-Stop-Riffs“ und Breakdowns. Sie sind außerdem bekannt für die Verwendung von stimmungsvollen Elementen und Instrumentaleinlagen in ihrer Musik.[18][13][14]

Die Musik von Gojira zeichnet sich durch progressive, ungewöhnliche Songstrukturen aus und ist frei vom oft in der populären Musik verwendeten Aufbau „Strophe – Refrain – Strophe“.[18] Der Gesangsstil bewegt sich im Rahmen von Hardcore-typischen Shouts und Death-Metal-typischem Growling.[14] Häufig werden Growls und klarer Gesang zusammengemischt, um einen aggressiv wirkenden, aber dennoch melodischen Effekt zu erzielen.[11][16]

Die Bandmitglieder wuchsen in Bayonne auf, einer Stadt an der französischen Westküste. Die dortige malerische Landschaft und die felsige Küste veranlasste sie, sich mit der Natur und der Erde zu befassen, und stellt so einen großen Einfluss für die Thematik dar, die Gojira in ihrer Musik zum Ausdruck bringen. Die Songtexte der Band befassen sich mit Spiritualität und Aspekten des Umweltschutzes.[19]

Soziales Engagement

Gojira betreiben eine Kooperation mit der Umweltorganisation Sea Shepherd zum Schutze der bedrohten Meerestiere, insbesondere von Delfinen, Walen und Haien. Ein Sea-Shepherd-Schiff war zeitweise nach der Band benannt. Auf Gojira-Konzerten betreiben Mitglieder von Sea Shepherd Merchandisestände, Erlöse einer EP mit Gastbeiträgen namhafter Musiker wie z. B. Devin Townsend, Max Cavalera und Fredrik Thordendal gingen der Organisation zu.[20]
