Dance Hall at Louse Point is the debut collaborative studio album by English alternative rock musicians PJ Harvey and John Parish, released on 23 September 1996 on Island Records. It was reissued on vinyl LP in October 2020.

Background

Parish wrote and played the music, while Harvey sang vocals and wrote the lyrics.[8] The pair had been musical collaborators for several years before making this album together – as a teenager growing up in rural England, Harvey contributed saxophone, guitar and backing vocals to Parish’s band Automatic Dlamini before forming her own band in 1991.[7] Parish later served as co-producer, guitarist, percussionist and keyboard player on Harvey’s 1995 album To Bring You My Love, and would also feature heavily on her 1998 album Is This Desire?.

The album was viewed by many PJ Harvey fans as a minor side project – perhaps due to the top billing accorded the more obscure Parish and her own accreditation as Polly Jean Harvey rather than the more widely recognised PJ Harvey name. The album consequently sold more poorly than any of her solo releases, entering the UK charts at #46 and barely denting the U.S. Billboard charts at #178 for one week.[9] It yielded only one single, "That Was My Veil", which spent a week at #75 in the UK charts.[10] Harvey later admitted that she left all promotional duties for the record to Parish because she was exhausted following a year of intense promotional activity for her own To Bring You My Love album in 1995. Reportedly, bosses at Harvey’s Island Records label feared the avant-garde venture was "commercial suicide",[11] despite it winning generally positive reviews: Entertainment Weekly opined, "This is 'deep' music in every sense; total immersion is recommended",[12] Musician reckoned "The results are as engaging as they are disturbing....full of strange moves and unusual textures", Logo felt it was "thrillingly sinister", while Q magazine praised its "polecat scat and brooding rural blues", adding that it felt "more a series of themes and word paintings."

Speaking about the album to NME in 1998, Harvey explained "I just really wanted to learn different things, and a lot of learning comes from working with other people. I tend to place more importance on lyric writing than music, and I wanted to somehow bring the music to a similar level with that, but I didn’t feel confident in myself as a musician to do it. I know John can write demanding and intellectual music, much more than mine, which is very simple. So it was really just to test my lyric writing." In 2001 she told Chicago Sun-Times, "People don't even count that, yet that's the record I'm really proud of. It was an enormous turning point. Lyrically, it moved me into areas I'd never been to before. Faced with John's music, which is so different to my own, it just made me write lyrics in a very different way and structure songs in a different way."[13]

Parish and Harvey did a brief UK club tour with the Mark Bruce Dance Company in early 1997, performing the album’s experimental songs with a group of interpretive ballet dancers onstage.

In 2009 Parish and Harvey released their second collaborative album A Woman a Man Walked By.

John Parish (* 1959 in Yeovil, Somerset, England) ist ein britischer Musiker, Komponist, Multiinstrumentalist und Musikproduzent, der vor allem durch seine Arbeit mit PJ Harvey, den Eels, Tracy Chapman und Giant Sand bekannt geworden ist.

Lebenslauf

In den 1980er Jahren gründete er die Band Automatic Dlamini. Zur wechselnden Bandbesetzung gehörte u. a. die Sängerin PJ Harvey. Automatic Dlamini nahm drei Musikalben auf: The D is For Drum (1987), Here Catch Shouted his Father (1990 – nicht veröffentlicht) und From A Diva to a Diver (1992). Während dieser Zeit begann Parish seine Karriere als Musikproduzent und arbeitete mit den britischen Bands The Chesterfields und The Brilliant Corners, ehe er PJ Harveys Album To Bring You My Love (1995) produzierte, auf welchem er auch Gitarre, Schlagzeug, Percussion und Orgel spielte.

Parish tourte mit PJ Harvey im Jahr 1995 und im darauffolgenden Jahr nahmen sie Dance Hall at Louse Point (1996) zusammen auf. 1997 produzierte er 16 Horsepowers Album Low Estate. An PJ Harveys Album Is This Desire (1998) war Parish wieder mitbeteiligt. Sein nächstes Projekt war das Schreiben von Liedern für den Soundtrack zum Film Rosie des belgischen Regisseurs Patrice Toyes.

John Parish produzierte Giant Sands Album Chore of Enchantment (2000) und gastierte auf Goldfrapps Album Felt Mountain (2000). Im darauffolgenden Jahr wurde er Koautor auf dem Eels Album Souljacker (2001) und produzierte Musik für Sparklehorse und Tracy Chapman. Außerdem arbeitete er mit einer Reihe von anderen europäischen Künstlern. So produzierte er Alben für den französischen Künstler Dominique A oder die belgische Popband Thou.

2002 nahm er seine eigene Platte How Animals Move (2002) auf und tourte mit seiner eigenen Musik. (Zu seiner Begleitband gehörte u. a. Adrian Utley von Portishead.)

Aus der erneuten Zusammenarbeit mit PJ Harvey entstanden die Alben White Chalk (2007) und A Woman a Man Walked By (2009).

Im Frühjahr 2019 produzierte er das Album Designer der neuseeländischen Sängerin Aldous Harding.

Polly Jean „PJ“ Harvey MBE (* 9. Oktober 1969 in Bridport, Dorset) ist eine britische Alternative-Sängerin und Songwriterin, Lyrikerin und bildende Künstlerin.

Musikalische Laufbahn

PJ Harvey begann ihre musikalische Laufbahn in der Band Automatic Dlamini. Unter ihrem Namen PJ Harvey gründete sich später ein Trio. 1992 erschien das erste gemeinsame Album Dry beim Label Too Pure, mit dem die Band die Aufmerksamkeit der Independent-Szene auf sich zog.

1993 unterzeichnete Harvey einen Vertrag mit dem Plattenlabel Island Records. Anschließend veröffentlichte sie kurz hintereinander zwei Alben, Rid of Me in der originalen Besetzung und, nachdem sich Harvey entschlossen hatte, als Solokünstlerin weiterzumachen, das Album 4-Track Demos. Im selben Jahr tourte sie im Vorprogramm von U2.

1995 erschien ihr Album To Bring You My Love, das John Parish und Flood produzierten. Parish und Harvey hatten bereits in der Band Automatic Dlamini zusammengearbeitet. 1996 brachten der Multiinstrumentalist und Produzent und PJ Harvey gemeinsam Dance Hall at Louse Point heraus. Auf Nick Caves – mit dem sie in den 1990er Jahren eine Beziehung führte[1] – Album Murder Ballads (1996) ist PJ Harvey als Duettpartnerin bei Henry Lee vertreten. Ebenso ist sie auf Trickys Album Angels with Dirty Faces (1998) beim Song Broken Homes Gastsängerin.

Mit ihrem Nachfolgealbum Is This Desire? (1998) konnte sie weder bei den Kritikern noch bei den Plattenkäufern an den Erfolg von To Bring You My Love anknüpfen. 1999 schloss sich Harvey wieder mit ihren alten Bandkollegen zusammen. Gemeinsam nahmen sie in Dorset und New York City das Album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000) auf. Für dieses Album, auf dem auch Thom Yorke (Radiohead) als Gastsänger dabei ist, bekam PJ Harvey 2001 den Mercury Music Prize verliehen. Auf dem Album It’s a Wonderful Life (2001) von Sparklehorse ist PJ Harvey als Gastsängerin und Musikerin vertreten.

PJ Harvey (1998)

2003 wurde sie auf die Rancho De La Luna eingeladen, wo sie mit Josh Homme und anderen Künstlern zusammen an den Desert Sessions Volumes 9 & 10 gearbeitet hat. Im Mai 2004 erschien das Album Uh Huh Her, das stilistisch an Harveys frühere Alben anknüpft. Darüber hinaus war sie 2004 auch auf dem Album Bubblegum von Mark Lanegan vertreten. Hier lieferte sie die Stimme für die Songs Hit the City und Come to Me. 2004 arbeitete sie an dem Album Before the Poison von Marianne Faithfull mit, auf dem auch der Song No Child of Mine enthalten ist.

Mit dem im September 2007 erschienenen elegischen Album White Chalk hat Harvey auf den Einsatz der bis dahin meist dominierenden E-Gitarre verzichtet. Stattdessen ließ sie sich ausschließlich von akustischen Instrumenten – vorwiegend dem Klavier – begleiten und präsentierte sich stimmlich meist eine Tonlage höher.

Am 30. März 2009 wurde das Album A Woman a Man Walked By veröffentlicht, das Harvey erneut in Zusammenarbeit mit John Parish aufgenommen hat. Das achte Soloalbum der Britin, Let England Shake, erschien im Februar 2011. PJ Harvey bekam dafür zum zweiten Mal den Mercury Music Prize verliehen. Zahlreiche Magazine wählten Let England Shake zum Album des Jahres.[2]

Neben ihrem Beruf als Musikerin trat PJ Harvey als Maria Magdalena in Hal Hartleys Spielfilm Das Buch des Lebens auf. Außerdem studierte sie am Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London und arbeitet als Bildhauerin. Im Juni 2013 wurde sie für ihre Verdienste um die Musik mit dem MBE ausgezeichnet. Königin Elisabeth II. überreichte ihr den Orden am 10. Dezember 2013 im Buckingham Palace[3]. Im April 2016 erschien ihr neuntes Soloalbum The Hope Six Demolition Project.

2019 komponierte sie die gleichnamige Filmmusik für eine Theateradaption des Noël Coward Theatre unter der Regie von Ivo van Hove des Filmklassikers Alles über Eva, bei denen die Hauptdarstellerinnen Gillian Anderson und Lily James jeweils bei einem Lied als Gastsängerinnen zu hören sind.[4]

Lyrik und Dokumentarfilm

Im Oktober 2015 veröffentlichte Harvey ihren ersten Gedichtband The Hollow of the Hand, eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fotografen Seamus Murphy. Als Vorbereitung reisten Harvey und Murphy in den Kosovo, nach Afghanistan und nach Washington, D.C.[12] Ihre Erfahrungen wurden in Seamus Murphys Film A Dog Called Money dokumentiert, der 2019 in den britischen und deutschen Kinos zu sehen war.[13][14] Murphy hatte zuvor bereits zwölf Kurzfilme für Harveys Album Let England Shake verantwortet.

2022 veröffentlichte Harvey den Versroman Orlam, der im Dialekt ihrer Heimat Dorset geschrieben ist und an dem sie sechs Jahre arbeitete.[15]
