    World Music Radio is the seventh studio album by American singer Jon Batiste. It was released on August 18, 2023, through Verve Records and Interscope Records. The album features guest appearances by JID, NewJeans, Camilo, Jon Bellion, Fireboy DML, Kenny G, Lil Wayne, Leigh-Anne and Lana Del Rey.

    Background

    On March 19, 2021, Batiste released his sixth studio album We Are, a breakthrough record that earned him the Grammy Award for Album of the Year 2022 and entered the charts in multiple countries. On March 4, 2023, Verve Records president Jamie Krents revealed that Batiste was focused on his upcoming album and that it would be out later in 2023.[1]

    World Music Radio is a concept album that revolves around an interstellar entity named Billy Bob Bo who creates "potpourri of the far-flung musical languages of Earth and transmits it to the cosmos with chuckling".[2] In a statement, Batiste explained that he created the record with a newfound feeling of "liberation" as well as a "renewed sense of exploration of my personhood, my craft and of the world around".[3] He announced the album on June 27, 2023, and shared the lead single "Calling Your Name" along with a visualizer.[4] The album was made available for preorder in a multitude of formats, including signed copies and limited edition vinyls.[5] While revealing details of the record, Batiste wanted to shed light on the intentions behind the album, saying that it is designed to "open your heart and stretch your mind, expanding your vision of popular art". He went as far as wanting to "redefine terms like world music".[6]

    World Music Radio received a score of 69 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on five critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception.[7] Bhanuj Kappal of Pitchfork wrote that World Music Radio "collapses the wide-ranging possibilities of global music into something for everyone and no one" as "Batiste's idea of universal music is so averse to cultural specificity—except the Afro-American traditions he's rooted in—that listening to it can feel like a sterile game of spot-the-style".[11] Alexis Petridis of The Guardian remarked that it is "worth noting that the songs are tightly written and hooky, but it is hard to see exactly what Batiste is bringing to the table: even the album's radio show concept, complete with between-song announcements by a DJ, is pretty well-worn".[9]

    Jonathan Michael „Jon“ Batiste (geboren am 11. November 1986 in Kenner, Louisiana) ist ein US-amerikanischer Musiker und Komponist. Der Oscar- und fünffache Grammy-Preisträger war von 2015 bis 2022 musikalischer Leiter der Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

    Leben und Wirken

    Batiste wurde in eine Musikerfamilie geboren, zu der u. a. auch Harold Battiste und Lionel Batiste gehörten. Die HBO-Serie Treme basiert in Teilen auf der Geschichte der Familie. Batiste selbst hatte in der Serie ebenfalls einen Auftritt und spielte sich selbst. Er besuchte die Juilliard School, an der er Masterabschlüsse in Jazz und klassischer Klaviermusik erwarb.[2][3]

    Batiste leitet die Musikgruppe Stay Human, die er mit seinen Studienkollegen Phil Kuehn und Joe Saylor gegründet hatte. Er wurde als musikalischer Leiter der Late Show with Stephen Colbert bekannt und war in der Sendung vereinzelt auch als Sidekick aktiv.[4][5] 2012 wurde er stellvertretender künstlerischer Leiter des National Jazz Museum in Harlem.[6] Seit 2017 ist er außerdem Music Director beim Magazin The Atlantic.[7] Im Mai 2017 erhielt er wie auch George Wein den Ehrendoktor der Salve Regina University.[8][9]

    Für den am 25. Dezember 2020 veröffentlichten Pixar-Film Soul schrieb Batiste die Jazz-Stücke und gewann zusammen mit den Komponisten des Soundtracks Trent Reznor und Atticus Ross einen Golden Globe Award.[10][11] Diese wurden als ein Teil des Soundtracks veröffentlicht. Bei den Grammy Awards 2021 wurde er sowohl für sein Album Chronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard in der Kategorie Bestes Instrumentalalbum als auch für das Album Meditations (mit Cory Wong) in der Kategorie Grammy Award for Best New Age Album für eine Auszeichnung nominiert.[12] Für seine Arbeit an Soul erhielt Batiste 2021 außerdem den Critics’ Choice Movie Award, einen BAFTA[13] sowie den Oscar. Im Sommer 2021 wurde Batiste Mitglied der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[14]

    Im März 2022 erhielt Batiste bei den Grammy Awards 2022 fünf Grammys und wurde damit zum meistausgezeichneten Künstler der Verleihung.[15] Er war zuvor mit elf Grammy-Nominierungen der meistnominierte Künstler jener Veranstaltung gewesen.[16] Einen Monat zuvor hatte er Suleika Jaouad geheiratet, die an Leukämie erkrankt war und vor einer Knochenmarktransplantation stand.[17] Kurioserweise wurde Batiste 2022 im jährlichen Kritikerpoll des Down Beat sowohl als Jazzkünstler des Jahres als auch als Künstler des Jahres „darüber hinaus“ (Beyond Artist) ausgezeichnet.[18]

    Im August 2022 wurde bekannt, dass Batiste seine Rolle in der Late Show aufgibt, um sich verstärkt auf sein künstlerisches Wirken zu konzentrieren.[19]
