Dawn of Chromatica is the third remix album by American singer Lady Gaga, released on September 3, 2021, by Streamline and Interscope Records. Consisting of remixes of songs from Gaga's sixth studio album, Chromatica (2020), the album embraces an underground, hyperpop production and features collaborations with numerous pop, electronic and Brazilian musicians.

Gaga's goal with her album was to display her love and support towards younger and upcoming artists. The featured acts include Arca, Rina Sawayama, Pabllo Vittar, Charli XCX, Ashnikko, Shygirl, Dorian Electra and Bree Runway, while retaining the contributions of Ariana Grande, Blackpink, and Elton John from the original album. Dawn of Chromatica received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who underscored its experimental nature. Commercially, it peaked at number 66 on the US Billboard 200, while topping the Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

Background and recording

On March 2, 2020, American singer Lady Gaga announced that her sixth album, Chromatica, was to be released on April 10.[1] The album was later postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though it was eventually released on May 29, 2020.[2][3] On April 4, 2021, the album's executive producer, BloodPop,[4] teased the possibility of a Chromatica remix album, asking his Twitter followers to suggest which artists they would like to see on such a project if it were to exist. He later replied to his tweet and tagged Japanese-British musician Rina Sawayama, who replied to it with a smirking emoji. He also confirmed he was working with British musician Charli XCX on a remix of the album's third single "911", and that the remix album would include an early version of "Babylon" that soundtracked an advertisement for Gaga's cosmetics brand Haus Laboratories.[5] On May 8, BloodPop revealed on his Twitter that American musician Dorian Electra would be on the album.[6] During an interview at the 2021 Brit Awards, Sawayama talked about the project, stating that "The wish is on the internet, and I've done my bit, let's just say that. So, it's in the works."[7] She also hinted that the song she was featured on was "Free Woman".[8]

English singer-songwriter Charli XCX and English producer A. G. Cook remixed "911".

On May 12, 2021, Charli XCX announced that production for the "911" remix had begun.[9] Later that month, British musician Bree Runway revealed she was involved with the remix album during an interview on The Jonathan Ross Show,[10] while on August 10, announcing she would appear on a remix of "Babylon" by tweeting out its lyrics.[11] That same day, Gaga acknowledged the album for the first time, saying that it was "so f*cking fuego" in a tweet,[12] and American singer and rapper Ashnikko confirmed her involvement with the project.[11] A snippet of her "Plastic Doll" remix was teased by RuPaul's Drag Race winner Aquaria during a DJ set in the weeks leading up to the album's announcement.[13] During the same period of time, the brazilian singer and drag queen Pabllo Vittar hinted that she would be featured on a remix of the song "Fun Tonight" bringing dancing brazilian rhythms such as forró and brega-pop, and American producer Lil Texas confirmed his involvement by posting a short snippet of his remix of "Sine from Above".[14][15] Other announced contributors include British musician Shygirl and Venezuelan producer Arca, who revealed to her Discord fan server that she had remixed Chromatica's second single "Rain on Me", which features American singer Ariana Grande.[8]

In July 2021, Canadian producer and singer Grimes announced on her Discord that she had produced remixes of the three interludes featured on Chromatica. She mentioned that she initially missed the deadline to submit them to the record label, but later speculated that due to the project's delay, there would be time.[16] However, after the album's official announcement on August 30, 2021, it was apparent that Grimes' contributions did not make the cut.[8]

Talking about the album, Maureen Lee Lenker of Entertainment Weekly opined that "while most remix albums are a further celebration of the lead artist's music, the forward-thinking Lady Gaga uses Dawn of Chromatica to also spotlight some of the recent pop talent that's blossomed in her image."[17] In an interview with The Wall Street Journal after the release of the record, Gaga said: "I love young artists and support them. All of them on the album have something to say, and they performed their hearts out."[18]

Composition

Dawn of Chromatica is truly a collaboration between Lady Gaga, the featured artists, and the community, for the community."

Dawn of Chromatica contains mainly underground pop and hyperpop sound.[20][21][22] The album opens with "Alice" remixed by the Berlin-based Philadelphian rapper and producer Lsdxoxo, who described it as "'Promiscuous Girl' on 2CB" [sic].[23] The second song in the track list, "Stupid Love", is remixed by the French producer Coucou Chloe, who "strips away the lead single's bubblegum beats to reveal a macabre midnight romp".[24][25] Arca's remix of "Rain on Me" follows as the third track; she introduces synths in the song and samples the songs "Time" and "Mequetrefe" off her fourth studio album Kick I (2020), as well as the Changa tuki track "Mételo Sácalo" by DJ Yirvin.[26][8] Rina Sawayama and English producer Clarence Clarity's remix of "Free Woman" features influences of metal with wailing riffs and drum fills, which resembles Gaga's 2011 studio album Born This Way. Sawayama starts the songs saying "let's go Gaga".[27] Pabllo Vittar's reimagination of "Fun Tonight" consists of forró music.[28]

The Charli XCX and English producer A. G. Cook remix of "911" gives a "transcendental" sound to the original version, with an overly distorted chorus and a new verse with lines such as "I look out to Venus and search for a place / And search for a place / And sometimes I hate myself" and "If it's all getting way harder / Turn it up, party to Gaga".[28][29] Ashnikko remixed "Plastic Doll" into a trap version, changing its mid-tempo composition."[13][28] "Sour Candy", featuring South Korean girl group Blackpink, receives a "booty-popping" club version by Shygirl and the Guernsey producer Mura Masa, and includes little metallic whizzes.[13][30][29] The remix, however, retains vocal contributions of Blackpink's Rosé and Lisa only, removing those of Jennie and Jisoo.[31] The album follows with an EDM remix of "Enigma" by American producer Doss, featuring "pulsating drops".[28][29] Dorian Electra's remix of "Replay" is influenced by metal and features "dramatic vocals" and "menacing growls".[26][30]

Scottish musician Sophie's work with Gaga remained unreleased, though her impact on Dawn of Chromatica was noted.

"Sine from Above", a duet with English musician Elton John, was remixed by American musician Chester Lockhart, Canadian musician Mood Killer, and Lil Texas. Their version features distorted bass, glitched trap, drum & bass, cartoonish sound samples, a sax solo and finishes with hardstyle music.[32][13][30] English musician Planningtorock's turns "1000 Doves" into a new wave track with house music influence.[32][27] The album closes with two versions of "Babylon": the "throbbing techno revamp" featuring Bree Runway and American producer Jimmy Edgar, alongside the "sledgehammering" Haus Labs version.[13][26][29]

Although BloodPop previously teased potential release of Gaga's collaborations with late Scottish producer Sophie that were scrapped from the original album, none of the songs appear on Dawn of Chromatica.[13] Sam Murphy of Junkee nevertheless acknowledged the "impact she has had on this futuristic brand of pop music. [...] The hyperpop movement [...] can largely be traced back to Sophie, and all the artists who appear here display some of Sophie's influence."[28] The producers of the "Sine from Above" remix further underscored this. Mood Killer stated that Sophie's "presence is all over the remix album. It's undeniable; she's part of the fabric of our scene and the industry, or whatever — our corner of it."[33] Chesther Lockhart added that "even if the style is different, so many of the sounds and the forward-thinking-ness and the ability to use electronic instruments in a different way is inspired by Sophie's impact on this underground electronic music scene over the past decade."[33]

Release

Dawn of Chromatica was officially announced on August 30, 2021, and released on September 3, on streaming and digital download formats.[34] Its CD was released on November 19, 2021,[35] while the vinyl was released in March 2022.[36] On the release day, Gaga posted a video of herself with cartoon filters through her social media. It included a snippet from the breakdown of the "Sine from Above" remix, along with a message encouraging her followers to "smile and dance through the pain".[37] In a further Twitter post, she invited her followers to celebrate the album's artists "who see the world, feel the world, and put that feeling into something bigger than all of us: music."[38]

According to Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, Dawn of Chromatica received a score of 74 based on four reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[39]

Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic called the album "the daring and liberated sibling" to Chromatica, with "wild, sometimes noisy, and always thrilling reimaginings."[30] Dubbing it "brilliantly entertaining", Robin Murray from Clash stated that "this remix compilation is an excuse to adore Lady Gaga for her abilities as a cultural curator, one of this generation's few – only – true interstellar pop talents."[25] Sam Murphy of Junkee thought that the remix album "unlocks the thrilling potential of the original", adding that "the whole album is noisy and garish, but it's thrilling to hear Gaga in a sonic arena that's uninhibited by what is happening in the mainstream.[28] Wolfgang Ruth of Vulture claimed that "filled with sliving remixes containing sliving features [...] this record is, no surprise, next level."[41] Writing for Gigwise, Alex Rigotti referred to it as "deliciously dramatic pop insanity".[29]

According to Pitchfork's Jamieson Cox, Dawn of Chromatica is "less a wall-to-wall collection of club bangers than an expansion of the Chromatica cinematic universe," and feels "less like a celebration of a world-beating record and more like passing the torch."[27] Tom Hull described the album as "beats sharpened, persona reduced, like a filter that turns realistic photos into caricatures."[40] Alexa Camp of Slant Magazine was more critical, opining "the album is a mixed bag, swinging wildly between microgenres and quality from track to track. If the original album favored pop hooks over musical invention, many of the versions on Dawn of Chromatica are noisy or just plain tuneless."[26]

Commercial performance

In the United States, Dawn of Chromatica debuted at number 66 on the Billboard 200 chart with 11,000 album-equivalent units,[42] while topping the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. This made Gaga tie the record for the most cumulative number one dance albums and extend her record as the artist with the most cumulative weeks at number one (at 211 weeks). She also became the first artist in history to occupy the top four positions in a single week, with Dawn of Chromatica, Born This Way (2011), The Fame (2008), and Chromatica (2020), respectively.[43]

Lady Gaga (* 28. März 1986 in New York City, New York als Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin, Songwriterin, Schauspielerin und LGBT-Aktivistin. Mit dem Debütalbum The Fame gelang ihr 2008 der internationale Durchbruch. Sie zählt mit über 180 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern zu den erfolgreichsten Sängerinnen.[1] Bisher veröffentlichte sie sieben Studioalben, darunter zwei mit dem Jazz-Musiker Tony Bennett. Mit der Hauptrolle in A Star Is Born (2018) gelang ihr auch der internationale Durchbruch als Schauspielerin. Sie wurde 2019 für einen Oscar in der Kategorie Beste Hauptdarstellerin nominiert und erhielt die Auszeichnung in der Kategorie Bester Song. Zudem wurde sie mit bislang 13 Grammys und zwei Golden Globes ausgezeichnet.

Leben

Sie wurde 1986 als Tochter italoamerikanischer Eltern in Manhattan geboren. Ihr Vater Joseph Germanotta ist Internetunternehmer, ihre Mutter Cynthia Louise Bissett Assistentin in einer Telekommunikationsfirma.[2] Sie hat eine jüngere Schwester und besuchte eine katholische Mädchenschule in der Upper East Side.[3] In der High School spielte sie Musical-Hauptrollen, wie die Adelaide in Guys and Dolls und die Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.[4]

Im Alter von 17 Jahren begann sie an der Tisch School of the Arts der New York University ein Musikstudium. Mit dem Schreiben von Essays und analytischen Arbeiten über Kunst, Religion, Soziales und Politik bildete sie sich in ihrem Songwriting weiter.[5] Im vierten Semester verließ sie die Hochschule, um sich ganz auf ihre Karriere zu konzentrieren.[6] Nachdem sie im Alter von 18 Jahren aus ihrem Elternhaus ausgezogen war, arbeitete sie als Go-go-Tänzerin, da ihre Eltern sie finanziell nicht unterstützten.[7] In dieser Zeit habe sie damit begonnen, Drogen zu konsumieren, worauf ihr Vater vorübergehend den Kontakt abgebrochen habe.[8] Mit 19 Jahren sei sie vergewaltigt worden.[9]

Sie erzählte in der Sendung Larry King Live, sie leide an der Autoimmunerkrankung Lupus erythematodes, an der ihre Tante gestorben sei. Die von den Ärzten bei ihr ermittelten Werte lägen jedoch im Toleranzbereich, bislang hätte sich keines der typischen Symptome gezeigt.[10] Im September 2017 gab sie bekannt, an Fibromyalgie zu leiden.[11]

Von 2011 bis 2016 war sie mit dem Schauspieler Taylor Kinney liiert, mit dem sie sich im Februar 2015 verlobt hatte.[12] Nach einer kurzen Liaison mit ihrem Toningenieur Don Horton im Sommer 2019 präsentierte Gaga im Februar 2020 bei Instagram den Investor Michael Polansky als neuen Mann an ihrer Seite.[13]

Karriere

Musikalische Anfänge

Sie begann bereits im Kindesalter mit dem Klavierspielen und als Jugendliche mit dem Schreiben von Songs.[14] Ihre ersten Auftritte hatte sie in der Rock-, vor allem aber in der Camp- und Queer-Szene der Lower East Side, wo sie unter anderem im Vorprogramm von Glam- und Garage-Rockbands wie Semi Precious Weapons zu sehen war.[15] Im Alter von 19 Jahren unterzeichnete sie bei Def Jam Recordings einen Plattenvertrag, der aber nach drei Monaten wieder aufgelöst wurde.[16] Kurz danach lernte sie den Musikproduzenten RedOne kennen, mit dem sie das Lied Boys Boys Boys schrieb.[17]

Der Musikproduzent Rob Fusari verglich einige der Gesangsharmonien in den von Lady Gaga geschriebenen Songs mit denen von Freddie Mercury. Er habe per Zufall ihren Künstlernamen kreiert:[18]

„Jeden Tag, wenn Stef [Lady Gaga] ins Studio kam, fing ich an Radio Ga Ga zu singen, anstatt „Hallo“ zu sagen. ‚Lady Gaga‘ war eigentlich eine Panne; ich tippte ‚Radio Ga Ga‘ in eine SMS und es führte eine Autokorrektur durch; so änderte sich ‚Radio‘ irgendwie in ‚Lady‘. 2007 arbeitete Lady Gaga mit der Künstlerin Lady Starlight zusammen, die ihre Bühnenoutfits kreierte.[19] Das Duo trat schließlich unter dem Namen Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue auf; im August spielten sie beim Musikfestival Lollapalooza.[20] Ab 2009 war ein Team mit dem Designer Nicola Formichetti für ihren extravaganten Kleidungsstil verantwortlich.[21]

2008–2010: Der internationale Durchbruch mit The Fame und The Fame Monster

2008 zog Lady Gaga nach Los Angeles, um ihr Debütalbum The Fame fertigzustellen;[8] es wurde im August veröffentlicht. Das Album wurde mit rund 15 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern ein weltweiter kommerzieller Erfolg; es erreichte Platz 1 in sechs Staaten und Platz 2 in den Vereinigten Staaten.[22] Die ersten beiden Singleauskopplungen, Just Dance und Poker Face, waren ebenfalls kommerzielle Erfolge. 2011 wurde sie für Poker Face mit einem Grammy in der Kategorie Best Dance Recording ausgezeichnet. Für das Album erhielt sie einen Grammy in der Kategorie Best Electronic/Dance Album. Zudem gewann die vierte Singleauskopplung Paparazzi bei den MTV Video Music Awards in den Kategorien Best New Artist sowie Best Art Direction und Best Special Effects. 2008 sang sie im Vorprogramm bei einer Tournee der Boygroup New Kids on the Block.[23] Ihre erste Tournee als Headliner war 2009 die The Fame Ball Tour.[24] Im gleichen Jahr nahmen The Midway State mit Lady Gaga ein Peter-Gabriel- und Kate-Bush-Cover von Don’t Give Up von 1986 auf. Der Song ist offiziell unveröffentlicht. Eine Bootleg-Version ist jedoch auf YouTube zu finden. Produziert wurde diese Version von Martin Kierszenbaum und Gavin Brown.[25] Darüber hinaus existiert eine Studio-Version von 2012.[26]

Im November 2009 wurde die EP The Fame Monster mit acht neuen Liedern veröffentlicht.[27] Die erste Single Bad Romance erreichte in 18 Staaten Platz 1[28] und wurde über vier Millionen Mal heruntergeladen. Damit ist sie die erste Sängerin, die drei Singles – Just Dance, Poker Face, Bad Romance – über vier Millionen Mal in den USA digital verkaufen konnte.[29] Als zweite Single wurde das Lied Telephone, eine Zusammenarbeit mit Beyoncé, ausgekoppelt. Der Song wurde Lady Gagas vierter Nummer-eins-Hit im Vereinigten Königreich. Ihre anschließende Monster Ball Tour umfasste rund 200 Konzerte.

2011–2012: Born This Way und Filmdebüt

Im Februar 2011 wurde aus ihrem nächsten Album die gleichnamige Singleauskopplung Born This Way veröffentlicht. Wenige Stunden nach der Veröffentlichung stand das Lied auf Platz 1 verschiedener Downloadportale und war in den iTunes-Charts in 23 Staaten verzeichnet.[30] Born This Way war der erste Song, der nur durch Downloads Platz 1 der deutschen Singlecharts erreichte; es war Lady Gagas vierter Nummer-eins-Hit in Deutschland innerhalb von zwei Jahren. Sie gewann für Born This Way bei den Europe Music Awards zwei Preise, unter anderem für den besten Song. Insgesamt gewann sie am Abend vier Preise. Poker Face und Just Dance sind in den Vereinigten Staaten die ersten Songs, die mehr als sechs Millionen Mal heruntergeladen wurden.[31] Die Musikvideos von Lady Gaga wurden auf dem Internetportal YouTube über eine Milliarde Mal aufgerufen, was zuvor keinem anderen Musiker gelungen war.[32]

Im Mai 2011 stellte Lady Gaga in Großbritannien einen Rekord auf: Sie ist die erste Solokünstlerin seit Ruby Murray 1955, die es geschafft hat, mit vier Singles gleichzeitig in den Top 20 vertreten zu sein, nämlich mit Born This Way, Judas, The Edge of Glory und Hair.[33] Ihren ersten Deutschland-Auftritt im Rahmen der Promotion-Tour für das neue Album absolvierte sie im Juni 2011, als sie im Finale der Casting-Show Germany’s Next Topmodel in Köln auftrat. Im November 2011 trat sie bei den MTV Europe Music Awards auf. Dort war sie für sechs Preise nominiert, von denen sie vier gewann.[34] Im selben Monat trat sie beim Bambi 2011 mit dem Titel Marry the Night in einer Live-Version auf. Kurz darauf wurde ihr von Karl Lagerfeld der Bambi in der Kategorie Pop International überreicht.[35] Lady Gaga lag 2011 mit Einnahmen von mehr als 25 Millionen US-Dollar auf Platz 4 der finanziell erfolgreichsten Musiker weltweit.[36]

Ende April 2012 startete sie ihre Tour The Born This Way Ball in Seoul; es folgten über 100 Shows weltweit. 2013 gab sie ihr Filmdebüt mit der Rolle der La Chameleón in Robert Rodriguez’ Film Machete Kills.[37]

2013–2014: ARTPOP und Cheek to Cheek

Wegen einer Hüftverletzung musste sie die Tournee frühzeitig beenden.[38] Es folgte eine Auszeit, in der sie sich von einer Operation erholte. Im August 2013 wurde die Single Applause von ihrem dritten Studioalbum Artpop veröffentlicht, nachdem einige Ausschnitte illegal ins Internet gestellt worden waren.[39] Zuvor wurde auch eine Demoversion von ihrem Song Aura illegal im Netz veröffentlicht. Applause konnte sich in den US-Charts in den Top 5 platzieren.[40] Es folgte ein Auftritt an den VMAs.

Die folgende Singleauskopplung Do What U Want, eine Kollaboration mit R. Kelly, wurde ein weiterer Charterfolg.[41] Das Album Artpop erschien im November 2013. Lady Gaga lud einige Fans zu einer Launch-Party in New York ein, die sie artRAVE nannte. Dort präsentierte sie Statuen von Jeff Koons und sang mehrere Songs aus dem Album.[42] Artpop wurde ihr zweites Nummer-eins-Album in den USA und konnte auch in anderen Staaten die Spitze der Charts erreichen. Es blieb allerdings hinter den Erwartungen zurück; ihr voriges Album hatte sich besser verkauft. Einen Tag vor der Veröffentlichung des Albums kündigte ihr Manager Troy Carter. Sie durchlebte eine depressive Phase und mied für einige Zeit die Öffentlichkeit.[43] Die dritte Single des Albums, G.U.Y., wurde im März 2014 veröffentlicht. Sie erreichte Platz 76 in den Billboard Hot 100.[44] Von Mai bis November 2014 ging sie auf die Welttournee artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball. Sie gab insgesamt 75 Konzerte auf vier Kontinenten und trat unter anderem zum ersten Mal in Istanbul und den VAE auf.[45]

Noch vor dem Ende ihrer Tournee startete sie die Promotion für ihr nächstes Studioalbum Cheek to Cheek, das sie zusammen mit Tony Bennett aufgenommen hatte. Es war bereits die zweite Zusammenarbeit mit ihm; 2011 hatte sie mit ihm ihre Version von The Lady Is a Tramp aufgenommen. Cheek to Cheek unterscheidet sich von ihren übrigen Veröffentlichungen dadurch, dass es eine Jazz-Platte ist. Die erste Single, Anything Goes, wurde im Juli 2014 veröffentlicht.[46] Eine weitere Single, I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, folgte im August. Beide erreichten Platz 1 der Billboard Digital Jazz Songs Charts. Die Albumveröffentlichung folgte im September; auch dieses Album erreichte Platz 1 der Billboard-Charts.[47] Außerdem wurde Cheek to Cheek bei der 57. Grammy-Verleihung in der Kategorie Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album ausgezeichnet.[48] Später folgte die Ankündigung, dass Bennett und Lady Gaga 2015 in Amerika und Europa auf Tournee gehen würden. Das erste Konzert gaben sie Silvester 2014 in Las Vegas.[49]

2015–2017: American Horror Story und Album Joanne

Im Februar 2015 sang Lady Gaga bei der Oscarverleihung 2015 einen Ausschnitt aus The Sound of Music. Für ihren Auftritt bekam sie gute Kritiken, so auch von Julie Andrews, die in dem 1965 Oscar-prämierten Film die Hauptrolle spielte.[50] Bei den Europaspielen 2015 in Baku trat sie mit einer Klavierversion von John Lennons Song Imagine auf.[51] Im September 2015 erschien der Song Til It Happens to You, der für einen Grammy und einen Oscar nominiert wurde.

Im Oktober 2015 wurde ein Modefilm veröffentlicht, der von Nick Knight für Tom Ford gedreht worden war. Er zeigt Lady Gaga neben mehreren Models, die auf einem Laufsteg tanzen. Im Hintergrund läuft eine neue Version des Stücks I Want Your Love von Chic, die von Lady Gaga und Nile Rodgers aufgenommen worden war.[52] Von Oktober 2015 bis Januar 2016 war sie in der fünften Staffel der Serie American Horror Story in einer Hauptrolle zu sehen. Für ihre Darstellung wurde sie mit einem Golden Globe ausgezeichnet.[53] In der 6. Staffel hatte sie eine Nebenrolle.[54]

Im Februar 2016 sang sie beim Super Bowl 50 die amerikanische Nationalhymne.[55] Bei den 58. Grammy Awards im selben Monat trat sie mit einem Tribut für den kurz zuvor verstorbenen David Bowie auf.[56]

Im September 2016 erschien Perfect Illusion, die erste Single aus ihrem fünften Studioalbum Joanne, die im Oktober 2016 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Single sowie das Album konnten aber nicht an die alten Erfolge anknüpfen und fielen nach zwei beziehungsweise fünf Wochen aus den deutschen Charts. Im Oktober startete sie die Dive Bar Tour, bei der sie für drei Konzerte durch die USA reiste. Es folgte die Singleauskopplung Million Reasons. Für das Album arbeitete sie unter anderem mit Mark Ronson, RedOne und Elton John zusammen.[57]

Im Februar 2017 trat sie in der Halbzeitshow des Super Bowl LI vor 150 Millionen Zuschauern auf. Im März 2017 war sie als Gast-Jurorin bei RuPaul’s Drag Race zu sehen. Im April war sie der Headliner des Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival und sang dort unter anderem den Song The Cure, der nach dem Auftritt als Single veröffentlicht wurde. Die Dokumentation Gaga: Five Foot Two wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Netflix gedreht und im September 2017 veröffentlicht.

Seit 2018: Film A Star Is Born, Shows in Las Vegas und Chromatica

Im August 2017 gab Lady Gaga bekannt, dass sie mit den Arbeiten an ihrem sechsten Studioalbum begonnen habe. Sie nahm unter anderem Songs mit Boys Noize, DJ White Shadow und BloodPop auf, mit denen sie bereits früher zusammengearbeitet hatte. Im März 2018 erschien ein Cover von Elton Johns Song Your Song, das sie für das Album Revamp & Restoration aufgenommen hatte.

In Bradley Coopers Remake von A Star Is Born übernahm sie die Hauptrolle. Der Film erschien im Oktober 2018. Zudem nahm sie auch Songs für den Soundtrack auf. Als erste Single wurde bereits im September der Song Shallow veröffentlicht, den sie zusammen mit Cooper gesungen hat. Das Stück wurde 2019 für mehrere Grammys nominiert und mit einem Oscar für den besten Filmsong ausgezeichnet.

Seit Dezember 2018 spielte Lady Gaga regelmäßig zwei Showprogramme in Las Vegas: Bei Enigma führte sie ihre Pophits auf, bei Jazz & Piano Akustikversionen ihrer Stücke sowie Jazz-Titel.[58] Im Februar 2020 veröffentlichte sie mit der Single Stupid Love die erste Auskopplung ihres sechsten Studioalbums Chromatica, das Ende Mai 2020 erschien.[59] Im selben Monat brachte sie die Single Rain on Me, eine Kollaboration mit Ariana Grande, heraus.[60] Mit Sour Candy hatte Lady Gaga kurz vor Start des neuen Albums in Zusammenarbeit mit Blackpink die dritte Singleauskopplung veröffentlicht.[61] Im Januar 2021 sang sie bei der Amtseinführung von Joe Biden als Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten die amerikanische Nationalhymne. Als Vorsichtsmaßnahme hierfür trug sie während ihres Auftritts ein kugelsicheres Kleid.[62]

Am 1. Oktober 2021 erschien Love for Sale, ihr zweites gemeinsames Album mit Tony Bennett.

Im März 2022 kündigte Lady Gaga ihre Welttournee The Chromatica Ball an. Diese sollte bereits 2020 stattfinden, wurde jedoch aufgrund der COVID-19-Pandemie zunächst abgesagt.[63] Das einzige Deutschland-Konzert fand am 17. Juli 2022 in der Düsseldorfer Merkur Spiel-Arena statt.

Für den Film-Soundtrack zu Top Gun: Maverick (2022) arbeitete sie mit den deutschen Filmkomponisten Hans Zimmer und Harold Faltermeyer zusammen. Für den daraus resultierenden Song Hold My Hand erhielt sie jeweils eine Nominierung für einen Grammy und einen Golden Globe.

Neben Joaquin Phoenix wird Lady Gaga eine Hauptrolle in der Fortsetzung von Joker (2019) spielen, die 2024 in die Kinos kommen soll.[64]

Einflüsse und Musikstil

Musikalisch ist Lady Gaga von Musikern wie David Bowie, Queen, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Grace Jones und Debbie Harry beeinflusst worden.[16] Ihr Gesang wird mit dem von Madonna und Gwen Stefani verglichen und ihre Musik als Pop der 1980er- und Europop der 1990er-Jahre bezeichnet.[65] Im Rückblick auf ihr Debütalbum The Fame schrieb die Zeitung Sunday Times: „Wenn man die Musik, Mode, Kunst und die Technologie kombiniert, erinnert Lady Gaga an Madonna, als sie gut war, an Gwen Stefani etwa zur Zeit von Hollaback Girl, an Kylie 2001 oder an Grace Jones gerade jetzt.“[66] Ähnlich kommentierte die Kritikerin Sarah Rodman vom Boston Globe ihre „Offensichtlichen Inspirationen von Madonna bis Gwen Stefani, die in ihrer mädchenhaften, aber kräftigen Stimme und ihren sprudelnden Beats auftauchen“.[67]

Vergleiche zwischen ihr und Madonna kommentiert Lady Gaga folgendermaßen: „Ich will nicht überheblich klingen, aber ich habe es zu meinem Ziel gemacht, die Popmusik zu revolutionieren. Die letzte Revolution wurde von Madonna vor 25 Jahren eingeleitet.“[68] In einem Interview bezeichnete sie sich als großen Fan von Iron Maiden, für die sie auch schon als Roadie gearbeitet hat.[69]

Lady Gaga bezeichnete Rainer Maria Rilkes Briefe an einen jungen Dichter als ihr Lieblingsbuch;[70] seit 2009 trägt sie ein Zitat daraus auf Deutsch als Tätowierung auf ihrem linken Oberarm: „Prüfen Sie, ob er in der tiefsten Stelle Ihres Herzens seine Wurzeln ausstreckt, gestehen Sie sich ein, ob Sie sterben müßten, wenn es Ihnen versagt würde zu schreiben. Muß ich schreiben?“[71]

2012 wurde eine Gattung der Farne, die 19 Arten umfasst, von einer Arbeitsgruppe um die Biologieprofessorin Kathleen Pryer (Duke University) nach Lady Gaga benannt, darunter die Artnamen Gaga germanotta (in Anspielung auf ihren Familiennamen) und Gaga monstraparva („Gagas kleine Monster“). Ein auffälliges gemeinsames Merkmal dieser Farne sei die Abfolge der Nukleinbasen G-A-G-A in einem ihrer Gene.[77]
