Chemtrails over the Country Club is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey. It was released on March 19, 2021, by Interscope and Polydor Records. Del Rey enlisted producer Jack Antonoff as her co-producer for the majority of the album, after working with him on her previous studio album, Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019), while previous collaborator Rick Nowels produced one of the album's tracks. The album features collaborations with Nikki Lane, Weyes Blood, and Zella Day.

Chemtrails over the Country Club is described as a folk, country folk, and Americana record. According to Del Rey, the album is about her friends and family. Other themes featured on the album are themes of escapism, love, heartbreak, and nostalgia, while encompassing her usual references to Americana, alongside emotions of disillusionment.

Chemtrails over the Country Club received acclaim from music critics, with many comparing its sound to its predecessor. The album debuted at number one in eight countries, including the United Kingdom, becoming Del Rey's fifth number one album in the country, and reached the top 5 in twenty countries, including the United States, where it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, becoming Del Rey's sixth consecutive top five album in the country.

Background

Del Rey first announced the album in an interview with Time on August 30, 2019, the release of her sixth studio album, Norman Fucking Rockwell!.[1][2] Originally titled White Hot Forever, it was slated for a 2020 release, with Del Rey saying that the album would be released "sometime within the next 12 or 13 months".[3] On May 25, 2020, the album's final title was revealed to be Chemtrails over the Country Club, scheduled for a September 5, 2020 release.[4][5] After the release of her debut book, Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass in 2020, Del Rey held a book signing, where she revealed that the album had been postponed due to vinyl record production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.[6] Additionally, she revealed the title of the song "Dealer", revealing that she was uncertain about including it on the album.[7][8] "Dealer" would not be included on Chemtrails over the Country Club, but eventually appeared on its follow-up Blue Banisters (2021).[9]

On August 7, 2020, Del Rey posted a video on Instagram featuring a snippet of the track "Tulsa Jesus Freak", which would later be included on the album.[10][11][12] On September 1, Del Rey posted a video on Instagram of herself on the set of the music video for the album title track, and announced that the album's lead single would be the song "Let Me Love You like a Woman", further stating the album would be released "soon" after.[13]

Music and lyrics

Chemtrails over the Country Club is described as a folk, country folk, and Americana record.[14][15][16] The majority of the album was co-produced by Del Rey, alongside Jack Antonoff who is also the sole producer of the album's lead single, "Let Me Love You like a Woman".[17][18] The song "Yosemite", which was recorded during the sessions for Del Rey's fifth studio album, Lust For Life (2017), held between 2015 and 2016,[19] was produced by Rick Nowles. The song failed to be included on Lust For Life, because, according to Del Rey, it "was too happy; we're not there yet."

Del Rey stated "so much of the album" pertains to her "stunning girlfriends" and "beautiful siblings".[20][21] She further added that, "In 2021, [Chemtrails over the Country Club] opens a sunnier chapter in [Del Rey's] controversial roman-à-clef, and folk legend Joan Baez advocates her acceptance in the pantheon", adding that the album "appears to reveal a more vulnerable Del Rey" who is "lighter on the LA menace" and "more innocently emotional" than in her previous work.[22][23]

The song "Breaking Up Slowly" features a guest appearance by American singer Nikki Lane, who also co-wrote the song with Del Rey. The album's closes with a cover of Joni Mitchell's "For Free" from her album Ladies of the Canyon (1970).[22] American singers Weyes Blood and Zella Day join Del Rey on the song.

Cover artwork

On January 10, 2021, a day prior to the release of its title track, Del Rey revealed the album cover and track list of Chemtrails over the Country Club on Twitter and Instagram.[9][24] The cover shows Del Rey with a number of her female friends (who also appear in the title track's music video).[25][26] On January 11, retail chains Target and HMV revealed exclusive editions of the record[27][28] featuring alternate cover art—a portrait photograph by Neil Krug.[29]

Release and promotion

On October 16, 2020, "Let Me Love You Like a Woman" was released alongside its music video as the album's lead single. Del Rey performed the song for the first time on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 14, 2020.[30] The performance, which was pre-recorded, was her first televised performance in nine years, since her infamous appearance on Saturday Night Live in 2012.[31] She performed the song again, as well as a rendition of "Silent Night" on at Jack Antonoff's Ally Coalition Talent Show on December 21.[32][33][34] The following day, she posted a teaser video for the album's title track on her social media platforms, announcing its release as the second single on January 11, 2021, alongside the album's pre-order.[35][36] Chemtrails over the Country Club was released worldwide on March 19, 2021.[37][38] Two more singles were released from the album. The songs "White Dress" and "Tulsa Jesus Freak" were released as the album's third and fourth singles respectively on March 26, 2021.[39][40][41][42]

Chemtrails over the Country Club received acclaim from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 81 based on 28 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[53] At AnyDecentMusic?, which collects critical reviews from more than 50 media sources, the album scored 7.8 points out of 10, based on 29 reviews.[52]

AllMusic's Fred Thomas stated Del Rey "shakes off the cocoon of her slick pop days completely" in Chemtrails over the Country Club, carrying on the nuanced songwriting of Norman Fucking Rockwell! and ensuing in her "most atmospheric" album to-date.[15] Will Hodgkinson of The Times called the album both "beautifully executed" and "thoughtfully realised".[54] Los Angeles Times critic Mikael Wood found Del Rey's singing reaching a "new peak" in Chemtrails; he pinpointed how her vocals move "between her airy head voice and her sultry chest voice".[55] Rhian Daly of NME called the album "a sublime statement" that mediates on fame and romance, having the singer "at the peak of her game".[48] Reviewing for The Independent, Helen Brown named Del Rey "a great storyteller", who consistently details "the who, what, where and when". Brown wrote that the album tones down the "lush orchestration" of its predecessor, opting for more acoustic guitar-picking, supported by "scuffs of scuzzy electric guitar and trip-hoppy hotel lobby organ".[47]

Liam Inscoe-Jones of The Line of Best Fit complimented the album's "gorgeous" instrumentation and Del Rey's story-based songwriting.[56] Praising the album's writing, The Observer critic Kitty Empire described it as "a record chockful of beauty and thoughtful autobiography that only a more experienced, more assured songwriter could have made".[57] Branding it "an enchanting listen" and a "bewitching project", Clash's Robin Murray lauded the album's minimal instrumentation and the world-building of its lyrics.[58] John Amen of PopMatters wrote, "Chemtrails makes use of a more minimal and nuanced palette than earlier albums, Del Rey distancing herself, throughout the set and to varying degrees, from her longstanding persona and familiar stylistics. In this way, she avoids collapsing into formulas or self-caricature, continuing to explore new aesthetic possibilities."[59]

In mixed reviews, Tim Sentz, writing for Beats Per Minute, stated Chemtrails is nowhere near as sonically versatile as its predecessor and is "a coffeehouse-appropriate album that contains almost none of what made her last album transcend".[60] Spin critic Bobby Olivier favored the "several gorgeous arrangements" of the album but felt the music is less memorable than the rest of her catalogue. He found the country and folk inspired sound "sometimes striking", but the lyrics were "uninspired" at moments.[61] Alexis Petridis of The Guardian thought the album centers heavily on Del Rey's recurrent themes of "nostalgia, troubled fame and ne'er-do-well lovers", but appreciated the melodies of its tracks.[46] The A.V. Club's Tatiana Tenreyro dubbed Chemtrails a sonically and lyrically inferior record to Norman Fucking Rockwell!, commenting that most of its tracks "don't stand out" and "blend together in their delicateness".[43] Johnny of the Well, reviewing for Sputnikmusic, criticized the album's "clumsy writing, bland instrumentation, vacuous sentimentalism and hamfisted stylisation"; nevertheless, he picked "Tulsa Jesus Freak" as a highlight.[62]

Commercial performance

Chemtrails over the Country Club debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, earning 75,000 album-equivalent units, (including 58,000 copies in pure album sales) in its first week, according to MRC Data, blocked by the top spot by Justin Bieber's Justice[73] becoming Del Rey's seventh US top ten debut on the chart.[73] The album became her third chart-topper on the US Top Album Sales list, scoring the fourth-largest sales week for a vinyl album since MRC Data began tracking sales in 1991, with nearly 32,000 copies sold.[74] In addition, the album accumulated a total of 21.19 million on-demand streams from the album’s songs.[73]

In the United Kingdom, Chemtrails over the Country Club debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, selling 40,000 copies in its first week and outselling the rest of the top 10 combined,[75][76] becoming Del Rey's fifth UK number-one album.[76] The album became the fastest-selling vinyl of the century for a female act in the UK, with 16,700 vinyl copies sold.[76] In its first three days in the United Kingdom, the album sold 30,566 physical copies.[77] In December 2023, the album was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for earning over 100,000 album-equivalent units in the UK.

Lana Del Rey (* 21. Juni 1985 in New York City als Elizabeth Woolridge Grant) ist eine US-amerikanische Pop-Sängerin und Songwriterin. Sie gilt wegen ihres melancholischen Stils und ihrer unverwechselbaren Stimme als eine der einflussreichsten Sängerinnen ihrer Generation.[1]

Del Reys Musik wird oft als „Hollywood Sadcore“ bezeichnet, da sie in ihren Texten über Themen wie Liebe, Einsamkeit und den amerikanischen Traum singt. Im Stil bezieht sie sich auf Americana der 1950er und 1960er Jahre.

Del Rey begann ihre Karriere im Jahr 2007 unter dem Namen Lizzy Grant und veröffentlichte ihr erstes Album Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant im Jahr 2010. Ihr internationaler Durchbruch kam mit dem Song Video Games (2011) und ihrem zweiten Studioalbum Born to Die, das eines der bestverkauften Alben des Jahres 2012 war. Leben

Lana Del Rey wurde als Elizabeth Woolridge Grant[2] in Manhattan geboren und wuchs in Lake Placid im Bundesstaat New York auf. In den späten 1990er Jahren war sie ein Fotomodell für Abercrombie & Fitch, zusammen mit Lindsay Lohan war sie auf Einkaufstaschen des Modelabels zu sehen.[3] Ab ihrem 18. Lebensjahr war sie als Sozialarbeiterin in New Yorker Obdachlosenheimen und in Rehabilitationszentren für Alkoholiker und andere Drogensüchtige tätig.[4] 2008 machte sie den Bachelor of Arts in Philosophie.[5] Bis zu ihrem 23. Lebensjahr lebte sie in einem katholischen Umfeld; sie war Mitglied des Kirchenchors.[6]

Lana Del Rey lebt in Los Angeles und steht beim Plattenlabel Universal unter Vertrag.

Von August 2011 bis Juni 2014 war sie mit dem schottischen Sänger Barrie-James O’Neill von der Band Kassidy liiert.[7] Nach zwischenzeitlichen Beziehungen mit dem italienischen Fotografen Francesco Carrozzini[8] und dem Polizisten und Reality-TV-Star Sean „Sticks“ Larkin[9] war Del Rey mit dem Musiker und Sänger Clayton Johnson verlobt, von dem sie sich 2021 wieder trennte.[10][11] Im März 2023 wurde bekannt, dass sie sich mit dem Musiker Evan Winiker verlobt hat.[12]

2003–2010: Beginn der Karriere

Im Alter von 17 Jahren begann sie ihre musikalische Karriere. Sie trat anfangs unter mehreren Pseudonymen mit Gitarre oder kleinem Ensemble in kleineren Clubs in Brooklyn und in der Lower East Side auf. Zwischen 2005 und 2006 nahm sie unter dem Pseudonym May Jailer das Album Sirens auf, das im Mai 2012 an die Öffentlichkeit gelangte.[13] Im Jahr 2010 veröffentlichte sie unter dem Künstlernamen Lizzy Grant das Album Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant.

Ihren heutigen Künstlernamen wählte sie nach dem Ort Delray Beach in Florida. Ihr Freund aus dieser Zeit stammte von dort[14] und sie war häufig in Miami und in Kontakt mit spanischsprachigen kubanischen Freunden:

2011–2013: Musikalischer Durchbruch mit Born to Die

Vor ihrem Durchbruch war sie mit Mando Diao auf Tour gegangen. Sie war an den Aufnahmen des MTV-Unplugged-Albums Above and Beyond beteiligt, das im November 2010 veröffentlicht wurde.[16]

Im Jahr darauf veröffentlichte sie ihren Titel Video Games. Bei YouTube erreichte er innerhalb eines Monats über eine Million Aufrufe.[17] Mittlerweile wurde das Video mehr als 317 Millionen Mal angesehen (Stand: 29. März 2023).[18] Zudem erreichte das Lied Platz eins der deutschen Singlecharts. Ihre ersten Auftritte mit dem neuen Album vor deutschem Publikum hatte Lana Del Rey in der am 12. November 2011 ausgestrahlten Folge der ARD-Sendung Inas Nacht[19] sowie bei zwei ausverkauften Konzerten ebenfalls am 12. November 2011 in Köln und am 14. November 2011 in Berlin. In Frankreich, Österreich und der Schweiz kam das Lied auf Platz zwei, in vielen Ländern erhielt es Gold- und Platinauszeichnungen.

Das Album Born to Die erschien am 27. Januar 2012.[20] Es erreichte unter anderem Platz eins der Charts in Deutschland, Österreich, der Schweiz und Großbritannien sowie Platz zwei in den Vereinigten Staaten. Das Video zur gleichnamigen Singleauskopplung wurde bereits im Dezember des Vorjahres veröffentlicht.

Als dritte Single erschien am 22. Juni 2012 in Deutschland der Song Summertime Sadness. Er erreichte die Top 5 in Deutschland und der Schweiz. Eine Veröffentlichung in den USA oder Großbritannien war nicht vorgesehen. In diesen Ländern wurde dafür National Anthem als Single veröffentlicht.

Das Album wurde unter dem Namen Born to Die – The Paradise Edition, auf dem acht neue Songs enthalten sind, am 16. November 2012 neu veröffentlicht.[21] Im Zuge einer H&M-Kampagne veröffentlichte Lana Del Rey vorab den Song Blue Velvet, ein Cover des Songs von Bobby Vinton. Die Single erschien am 20. September 2012 und platzierte sich in den Charts, unter anderem in Großbritannien.[22] Die erste Single aus der Neuauflage war der Song Ride, der am 25. September veröffentlicht wurde.[23] Der Song Burning Desire wurde als Download bereitgestellt.[24] Als weitere Single erschien der Titel Dark Paradise am 1. März 2013.[25] Der Song Young & Beautiful, ein Teil des Soundtracks zum Film The Great Gatsby, erschien am 23. April 2013,[26] das dazugehörige Video einen Tag davor.[27] In den USA ist dies Del Reys erfolgreichste Single nach Video Games. Sie erreichte Platz 22 der Billboard Hot 100. Das Album Born to Die verkaufte sich weltweit mehr als fünf Millionen Mal und war auf dem fünften Platz der bestverkauften Alben des Jahres 2012.[28]

Von April bis September 2013 war sie auf großer Europatournee. Die Paradise Tour für Europa begann am 3. April in Amnéville (Frankreich) und endete am 20. September 2013 in Istanbul. Im Verlauf der Tour trat sie Ende April 2013 auch in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Wien, Frankfurt und München auf.[29] Im November 2013 schloss sie die Paradise Tour mit Auftritten in Lateinamerika ab.

2014–2015: Ultraviolence und Honeymoon

Die ersten Arbeiten an einem neuen Studioalbum nahm sie im Februar 2013 auf. Laut eigener Aussage solle dieses „etwas reduzierter“, aber immer noch „filmisch und düster“ werden.[30]

Am 5. Dezember 2013 veröffentlichte Lana Del Rey den Kurzfilm Tropico.[31] Bei der Premiere bestätigte sie den Titel des neuen Albums, das Ultraviolence heißt.[32][33] Die erste Singleauskopplung West Coast wurde am 14. April 2014 veröffentlicht, als zweite Single wurde Shades of Cool am 26. Mai 2014 ausgekoppelt.

Für den Film Maleficent – Die dunkle Fee coverte sie den Song Once Upon a Dream.

Die dritte Singleauskopplung Ultraviolence folgte am 6. Juni 2014. Das Album erschien am 13. Juni 2014. Am 17. Juni 2014 folgte die bislang letzte Singleauskopplung Brooklyn Baby.[34]

Lana Del Rey trug für den Film Big Eyes die Songs I Can Fly und Big Eyes bei. Big Eyes verschaffte ihr eine Nominierung für den besten Filmsong bei den Golden Globe Awards 2015.

Ende 2014 gab Lana Del Rey bekannt, an einem neuen Album zu arbeiten. Auf Konzerten ihrer Tour gab sie bekannt, dass dieses im September 2015 veröffentlicht werden solle und den Namen Honeymoon trägt.[35] 2015 erstellte sie für ihr neues Album einen Instagram-Account, auf dem sie zeitweise Bilder und kleine Mitschnitte von der ersten, gleichnamigen Single, vor dessen Veröffentlichung zeigte. Der Song wurde am 14. Juli 2015 veröffentlicht. Als zweite Single wurde der Song High by the Beach am 10. August 2015 veröffentlicht. Nach Premiere des Videos bestätigte Lana Del Rey, dass das Album am 18. September 2015 veröffentlicht werde.[36] Laut Lana Del Rey solle ihr neuestes Studioalbum stilistisch mehr in Richtung des zweiten Albums Born to Die als in Richtung des dritten Albums Ultraviolence gehen.

2017: Lust for Life

Am 18. Februar 2017 wurde die zuvor inoffiziell als Love angekündigte Single zunächst von Fans dann von Lana Del Rey veröffentlicht. Das zugehörige Video wurde von Rich Lee produziert.[37] Mit Lust for Life erschien am 19. April 2017 die zweite Singleauskopplung aus dem gleichnamigen Album. Es handelt sich um eine gemeinsame Singleveröffentlichung mit The Weeknd. Am 14. Mai 2017 erschien mit Coachella – Woodstock in My Mind ein weiterer Song. Am 25. Mai 2017 gab Lana Del Rey auf Twitter[38] bekannt, dass Lust for Life am 21. Juli 2017 veröffentlicht wird. Zuvor erschienen mit Groupie Love und Summer Bummer noch zwei weitere Singleauskopplungen. Am 14. September 2017 erschien die bisher letzte Single White Mustang.

2018–2019: Norman Fucking Rockwell

Mit Mariners Apartment Complex erschien am 12. September 2018 die erste Singleauskopplung aus Del Reys kommendem sechsten Studioalbum. Vier Tage später erschien mit Venice Bitch die nächste Singleauskopplung. Am 9. Januar 2019 erschien mit Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman like Me to Have – but I Have It die dritte Vorab-Single aus dem kommenden Studioalbum. Lana Del Rey gab an, dass dieses neue Album Norman Fucking Rockwell heißen wird.[39] Am 17. Mai 2019 veröffentlichte Del Rey eine Coverversion zu Sublimes Doin’ Time.[40] Am Tag der Veröffentlichung feierte ebenfalls eine Dokumentation über die Band ihre Premiere auf dem Tribeca Film Festival.[41] Die Single erreichte Platz 74 der Schweizer Hitparade und wurde zu Del Reys 17. Charterfolg als Interpretin in der Schweiz.[42] Im Vereinigten Königreich erreichte die Coverversion Platz 75 und wurde dort zu Del Reys 22. Charthit.[43] Am 22. August 2019 erschienen mit Fuck It, I Love You und The Greatest zwei weitere Singleauskopplungen, ehe am 29. August 2019 das Album erschien. Am 13. September 2019 veröffentlichte Del Rey zusammen mit Miley Cyrus und Ariana Grande die Single Don’t Call Me Angel.[44] Hierbei handelt es sich um den offiziellen Soundtrack zu Charlie’s Angels.[45]

2020–2021: Chemtrails over the Country Club

Am 16. Oktober 2020 veröffentlichte Del Rey mit Let Me Love You Like a Woman die erste Singleauskopplung aus ihrem kommenden siebten Studioalbum Chemtrails over the Country Club.[46] Während die Single die deutschen und US-amerikanischen Charts verfehlte, gelangen Charterfolge in der Schweiz und dem Vereinigten Königreich.[47][48] Mit Chemtrails over the Country Club erschien am 11. Januar 2021 das Titellied zum kommenden gleichnamigen Album.[49] Wie sein Vorgänger erreichte die Single Chartplatzierungen in der Schweiz und dem Vereinigten Königreich, in Deutschland und den Vereinigten Staaten verfehlte es ebenfalls die offiziellen Singlecharts.[48][50] Am 19. März 2021 erschien letztendlich nach einigen Verschiebungen mit Chemtrails over the Country Club das siebte Studioalbum Del Reys.[51][52]

2021: Blue Banisters

Am 20. Mai 2021 veröffentlichte Del Rey vorab die drei Songs Blue Banisters, Text Book und Wildflower Wildfire aus ihrem angekündigten Album Blue Banisters.[53]

Für die Band Bleachers von Jack Antonoff wirkte sie an den Songs Secret Life und Don’t Go Dark vom Album Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night mit, das am 30. Juli 2021 veröffentlicht wurde.[54]

Am 8. September 2021 folgte mit Arcadia die vierte Singleauskopplung aus dem Album Blue Banisters. Einen Monat später erschien schließlich das Album. Zunächst erschien es exklusiv beim Einzelhändler Sunrise Records and Entertainment in Kanada und den Vereinigten Staaten am 15. Oktober 2021, die reguläre Veröffentlichung erfolgte weltweit eine Woche später am 22. Oktober 2021.[55][56]

Anfang 2022 wurde bekannt, dass Del Rey einen Titel für die Jugendfernsehserie Euphoria aufgenommen habe. Das Lied trägt den Titel Watercolor Eyes und erschien als Einzeltrack-Single am 21. Januar 2022.[57][58]

Anfang Oktober gab Taylor Swift bekannt, dass Del Rey einen Gastbeitrag auf ihrem Album Midnights mit dem Titel Snow on the Beach haben wird, das am 21. Oktober 2022 erscheint.[59]

2023: Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd

Am 7. Dezember 2022 veröffentlichte Del Rey mit Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd die erste Vorab-Singleauskopplung vom gleichnamigen neunten Studioalbum.[60][61] Am 14. Februar 2023 folgte mit A&W ebenfalls vorab die zweite Singleauskopplung.[61][62] Nachdem mit The Grants noch eine Promo-Single am 14. März 2023 erschien,[63] folgte am 24. März 2023 schließlich die Veröffentlichung des Albums Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.[64]

Am 27. Mai gab Del Rey beim MITA Festival in Rio de Janeiro zum ersten Mal wieder ein Konzert nach über drei Jahren Pause.[65] Es war der Auftakt zu einer längeren Festival-Tour mit weiteren Stationen in Europa und Nordamerika.[66][67] Die Einnahmen ihrer Herbst-Tour im Südosten der USA sollen komplett den Auftritts-Städten zugutekommen.[68]

Im August 2023 gewährte Del Rey dem Deutschrapper Kontra K als erstem die Erlaubnis für ein Sampling von Summertime Sadness. Dieser veröffentlichte daraufhin die Single Summertime, bei der Del Rey durch das Sample als Gastsängerin aufgeführt wird.[69] Das Stück avancierte zum Nummer-eins-Hit in Deutschland, dem zweiten Del Reys nach Video Games.[70]

Für die Grammy Awards 2024 erhielt Del Rey fünf Nominierungen. Das Album Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd wurde in den Kategorien Album of the Year und Best Alternative Music Album nominiert, der Song A&W in den Kategorien Song of the Year und Best Alternative Music Performance, und ihre Performance von Candy Necklace mit Jon Batiste in der Kategorie Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.[71]

Am 29. November 2023 trat Del Rey in Graceland bei der TV-Show Christmas at Graceland auf, in der sie in Andenken an Elvis Presley den Song Unchained Melody sang.[72]

Ihre Musik wurde aufgrund ihrer melancholischen Themen und filmischen Klanglandschaften als „Hollywood Sadcore“ bezeichnet. Ihre Texte, in denen Themen wie Liebe, Verlust und Nostalgie häufig auftreten, erheben Anspruch auf literarische bzw. lyrische Qualität; Del Rey spielt bewusst auf die Gedichte von Walt Whitman und Sylvia Plath an.[74]

Del Reys Musik ist stark von den 1950er und 1960er Jahren beeinflusst, insbesondere von den Klängen des klassischen Hollywood und dem goldenen Zeitalter der amerikanischen Popmusik. Neben ihren Retro-Einflüssen hat Del Rey auch zeitgenössische Künstler wie Eminem, Britney Spears, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley und Nirvana als Inspirationen für ihre Musik genannt.[74]
