Liquid Tension Experiment 3 is the third studio album by the American instrumental progressive metal super group Liquid Tension Experiment. Released on April 16, 2021,[1] it is their first studio effort since 1999's Liquid Tension Experiment 2.[7]

The regular edition of the album contains eight tracks, including two duets, one "on-the-fly jam" and one "meticulously arranged cover"; the bonus disc comes with almost one hour of improvisations. It was released in digital, CD, LP and Blu-ray formats, including a limited 2CD+Blu-ray artbook edition and a limited deluxe hot pink box set.[7]

A video for the song "The Passage of Time", their first composition in 22 years, was released on January 22, 2021.[7][8] This was followed up by a video for "Beating the Odds" on February 26, 2021,[9][10] and then by a video for "Hypersonic" on March 24, 2021.[11]

Background and writing

On December 14, 2020, band members Tony Levin (bass), John Petrucci (guitars), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and Mike Portnoy (drums) released a series of posts on social media (pictures of themselves wearing surgical masks spelling out "LTE 3") teasing a third Liquid Tension Experiment album; a picture of the four of them together with the same masks was posted the following day.[12] On December 17, 2020, it was formally announced that Liquid Tension Experiment 3 would be released by Inside Out Music in the second quarter of 2021.[13] The date, later announced to be March 26, has since been delayed to April 16, 2021, due to printing errors by the manufacturer.[1]

The album had been recorded secretly in August 2020,[14] at the Dream Theater studio named DTHQ.[15] Portnoy had previously recorded drums for Petrucci's solo album Terminal Velocity at the studio, their first release together since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings (with Dream Theater);[16] the band would re-use the studio for the LTE sessions. Portnoy and Rudess also had performed together during a Cruise to the Edge a few years before.[17] The drummer said that the "insanity of 2020" allowed them some time to reunite.[17]

Also according to Portnoy, all members plus two studio professionals quarantined and took COVID-19 tests before the album's sessions.[17]

Like Liquid Tension Experiment 2, each song is described by the band in detail within the liner notes.

The track "Chris & Kevin's Amazing Odyssey" is a follow-up to "Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure" (from Liquid Tension Experiment) and "Chris & Kevin's Bogus Journey" (from Spontaneous Combustion); Chris and Kevin is how a photographer mistakenly called Mike and Tony during photo sessions for the first album, and that has since remained a recurring internal joke and is used to title duets between the drummer and the bassist.[17] It is a drum-and-bass duet featuring Levin on the electric upright bass.[18]

"Rhapsody in Blue", composed by George Gershwin, was arranged and performed by the band during their 2008 tour; the band would record a studio version of the arrangement for the album.[18] The middle section of the band's 2008 arrangement was inspiration for the middle section of "The Count of Tuscany" off Black Clouds & Silver Linings; also, the standard clarinet introduction was played by Levin on the Chapman Stick.[19]

Liquid Tension Experiment ist eine US-amerikanische Progressive-Rock/Metal-Supergroup, die 1997 von Mike Portnoy, dem damaligen Schlagzeuger von Dream Theater, ins Leben gerufen wurde. Weitere Mitglieder waren der Bassist Tony Levin (unter anderem King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), Gitarrist John Petrucci (ebenfalls Dream Theater) sowie Keyboarder Jordan Rudess (seit 1999 bei Dream Theater).

Geschichte

Erste Phase (1998/1999)

Das erste Album des Projekts, Liquid Tension Experiment, wurde 1998 in nur sechs Tagen aufgenommen. Das Debüt enthält acht komponierte Stücke sowie eine knapp 30-minütige Jamsession namens Three Minute Warning. Nach der Veröffentlichung wurde am 31. Januar 1999 ein Konzert auf der NAMM gegeben.

Das zweite Album, Liquid Tension Experiment 2, ist größtenteils zwischen dem 11. Oktober und dem 29. November 1998 aufgenommen worden. Es enthält acht Stücke, die zwischen viereinhalb und knapp 17 Minuten dauern und von denen drei improvisiert sind. Das fast 17-minütige Hauptstück 'When the Water Breaks' trägt seinen Namen, weil John Petruccis Frau in der Zeit der Aufnahmearbeiten ihre gemeinsame Tochter Kiara gebar. Es enthält auch einige Elemente, die auf das Ereignis hinweisen: So ist zu Anfang eine (Kinder-)Spieluhr zu hören und Petrucci imitiert während des Stücks mehrere Male Babylaute mit seiner Gitarre. Aufgrund der Geburt konnten einige Gitarrenspuren erst 1999, einige Monate nach den Hauptaufnahmen eingespielt werden.

Bereits nach den Aufnahmen zum ersten LTE-Album hatte sich Keyboarder Jordan Rudess Portnoys und Petruccis Stammband Dream Theater angeschlossen, wo er die Nachfolge von Derek Sherinian angetreten hatte. Da mittlerweile also drei der vier LTE-Mitglieder bei Dream Theater aktiv waren, verständigte man sich darauf, dass es bis auf weiteres keine neuen LTE-Alben mehr geben werde. Auch wurde Mike Portnoy nach eigenen Angaben vom Plattenlabel Magna Carta, bei dem Liquid Tension Experiment ihre zwei Alben veröffentlicht hatten, betrogen, weshalb er kein weiteres Mal mit Magna Carta zusammenarbeiten wolle.

Zweite Phase (seit 2007)

Anfang 2007 fand ein Treffen zwischen Tony Levin und den anderen LTE-Mitgliedern statt. Eine Fortsetzung des Projekts im Jahre 2008 wurde seitens der Mitglieder nicht mehr ausgeschlossen.

Am 26. Oktober 2007 erschien unter dem Namen Liquid Trio Experiment ein Album namens Spontaneous Combustion. Es enthält Aufnahmen, die während der Arbeiten am zweiten Liquid-Tension-Experiment-Album entstanden waren, zu der Zeit, als Petruccis zweite Tochter Kiara geboren wurde und er bei seiner Frau im Krankenhaus war. In dieser Zeit spielten die Musiker Levin, Rudess und Portnoy einige spontane Jams ein, da sie die gebuchte Studiozeit nicht ungenutzt verstreichen lassen wollten.

Zum zehnjährigen Jubiläum dieser Zusammenarbeit traten die vier Musiker in den USA auf, darunter auch im Rahmen des NEARfests in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania). 2009 erschien das Live-Album Liquid Trio Experiment 2: When the Keyboard Breaks – Live in Chicago. Der Titel des Albums ist eine Anspielung auf das Stück When the Water Breaks von 1999 und bezieht sich auf Probleme mit Rudess’ Keyboard etwa um die Mitte der Aufführung im Park West, die die Musiker dazu veranlassten, untereinander ihre Instrumente zu tauschen und den Rest des Auftritts vollständig zu improvisieren. Auf dem Album ist ausschließlich dieser improvisierte Teil komplett enthalten. Als (spontaner) Gastmusiker agierte Charlie Benante von der Metal-Band Anthrax.

LTE3

Einige Jahre nachdem Mike Portnoy Dream Theater verlassen hatte, wurde in Interviews verlautbart, dass alle Mitglieder der Band ein neues Album aufnehmen würden, sobald es die Zeit erlaubt. Am 15. Dezember 2020 sind erste Teaser in den sozialen Medien aller Band-Mitglieder veröffentlicht worden. Am 17. Dezember 2020 wurden erste, kurze Musik-Ausschnitte des dritten Albums veröffentlicht. Das Album ist am 16. April 2021 beim deutschen Label InsideOut Music erschienen.[1][2][3]
