Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is the fourth studio album by British rapper Little Simz, released on 3 September 2021 by Age 101 Music and AWAL.[1] The album succeeds the Mercury Prize-nominated album Grey Area,[2] released in 2019, and the five-track EP, Drop 6 (2020).[3][4] It is supported by five singles: "Introvert", "Woman", "Rollin Stone", "I Love You, I Hate You" and "Point and Kill". The album is produced by frequent collaborator Inflo, and includes guest appearances from Cleo Sol and Obongjayar.

The album received critical acclaim and was named the best album of 2021 by Exclaim! and BBC Radio 6 Music. It won the 2022 Mercury Prize on 18 October 2022.[5] It also won the Libera Award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Record and was nominated for the Brit Award for British Album of the Year. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was included in Rolling Stone's ranking of the 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time.[6]

Title and concept

The album title is a backronym of Simbi, which is part of Simz's full first name, Simbiatu. Speaking on the album title to The Guardian, Little Simz commented: "I'm just very to myself and I didn't know how to really navigate that, especially coming in this industry where you're expected to have this extroverted persona all the time. I wanted to just let people know like, yo, I'm actually this way inclined […] When it comes to business and my work, I'm not shy at all, I don't hold back with that. I'm very serious and direct, but other stuff sometimes."[7] Thematically, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is about Simz "being this introverted person that has all these crazy thoughts and ideas and theories in my head and not always feeling like I’m able to express it if it’s not through my art."[7]

Release and promotion

Little Simz announced the album's title, cover art, release date, and preorder on 21 April 2021.[8] The first single, "Introvert", was released alongside its music video on 21 April 2021. The second single, "Woman" featuring Cleo Sol, was released on 6 May 2021 with a music video directed by Little Simz.[9] The track "Rollin Stone" was released as the third single on 14 June 2021,[10] followed by "I Love You, I Hate You" as the fourth single on 8 July 2021.[11][12] A fifth single, "Point and Kill" featuring Obongjayar, was released on 1 September 2021, followed by a music video.[13]

An accompanying European tour was announced on 28 May 2021, scheduled for winter 2021 and early 2022.[14]

Chart performance

The album debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart, becoming her highest charting album and first top forty. The album was the biggest selling album in independent record shops the week of its release.[15]

The album received widespread acclaim from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, the album received an average score of 88, based on 24 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[17]

In the review for AllMusic Timothy Monger compared the album favourably to its predecessor; "As on Grey Area, there are no dry spells or dips in quality, just a master class in modern songwriting with heaps of poise and a beating, soulful heart."[18] Lee Wakefield for Clash wrote that Sometimes I Might Be Introvert makes for "addictive listening", adding that "the cinematic flourishes are cranked up and Simz is more confessional than ever, pondering what defines her as both Little Simz the artist and Simbi the person."[19] Uncut concluded it was "an even more ambitious conceptual album that finds her sharing her insecurities, praising her heroes and going on a fairytale voyage over 19 tracks."[17] Writing for The Independent, Helen Brown described it as "the most thrilling album of the year", praising the "Bond theme-level orchestration" in the production and Little Simz's lyricism. Rachel Aroesti, writing for The Guardian, concluded Sometimes I Might Be Introvert "may or may not provide a commercial boost for its maker, but this rich, fascinating album cements Little Simz’s significance regardless."[21]

Entertainment Weekly noted that Little Simz "once again showcases her vulnerability, opening up old wounds from relationships with her father, a past lover, and, ultimately, herself."[20] PJ Somerville from The Line of Best Fit commented that "Talking family, trauma, the industry and her peers, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is tactical, theatrical, and is the product of 100,000 hours spent honing her craft resulting in a body of work with heart, and its head firmly on its shoulders."[23] Granting the record Album of the Week, James Rettig for Stereogum declared Sometimes I Might Be Introvert as Simz's "most personal album yet but also her most removed, in the sense that it’s cinematic and surreal and overwhelming", praising the subject matter and "sweeping orchestral" production.[27] PopMatters' John Amen praised the album, writing that Simz "moves from stream-of-consciousness confessions to epigrammatic observations, volatile rants to equanimous self-examinations, and personal confessions to broad societal diagnoses."[28]

Little Simz (* 23. Februar 1994 in Islington, London als Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo)[1] ist eine britische Rapperin, Sängerin und Schauspielerin.

Name

Der Name Little Simz leitet sich von Ajikawos Vornamen ab. Bis 2013 firmierte sie unter dem Namen Lil Simz. Als Produzentin nennt sie sich zuweilen She, ebenso in den sozialen Netzwerken, wo sie auch als Simztheperson erscheint. Des Weiteren benutzt sie das Pseudonym Bars Simzson. In den Medien wird ihr Name meist mit Simbi Ajikawo angegeben. Simbi wird sie auch im Alltag genannt und so nennt sie sich selbst in ihren Veröffentlichungen.

Karriere

Schauspiel

Erste größere Bekanntheit erlangte Ajikawo als Schauspielerin, als sie 2010 die Rolle der Vicky in der BBC-Serie Spirit Warriors spielte. 2013 spielte sie in fünf Folgen der Serie Youngers des britischen TV-Senders E4.[2] Nach dieser Produktion stellte sie ihre Tätigkeit als Schauspielerin zunächst ein, um sich ganz ihrer Musikkarriere widmen zu können.[3] Seit 2019 spielte sie in 18 Folgen der Netflix-Serie Top Boy die Rolle der Shelley.[2]

Musik

Little Simz bezeichnet ihre Musik selbst als Rap Experimental.[4] Ihre Musik ist fest im Hip-Hop Subgenre Grime verwurzelt, zeichnet sich aber durch eine Offenheit gegenüber Einflüssen verschiedenster Musikstile und -genres aus. Elemente aus Rock, Jazz und sogar Klassik verleihen ihren Produktionen eine Genre-untypische, musikalische Vielschichtigkeit.[5][6]

Zusammen mit Josh Arcé, Chuck 20 und Tilla bildet Simz das Musikerkollektiv Space Age. Regelmäßig erscheinen die Künstler als Gastmusiker auf den Veröffentlichungen der anderen, sie veröffentlichen aber auch als Gruppe.[7]

Live tritt Little Simz sowohl mit DJs als auch mit Livebands auf. Bei einigen Songs spielt sie live selbst Gitarre.

Ajikawo begann schon im Kindesalter, zu rappen und zu musizieren. Bereits mit 11 Jahren trat sie zum ersten Mal in einem Jugendzentrum live auf.[8] Als ihre frühen, prägenden Einflüsse nennt sie Missy Elliott und Lauryn Hill.[9]

2010 veröffentlichte sie ihr erstes Mixtape Stratosphere. Der Radiomoderator DJ Semtex spielte den Titelsong wiederholt auf BBC 1Xtra, wodurch sie in der Hip-Hop-Szene bekannt wurde.[10] Einen weiteren Schub erhielt ihre Popularität 2013, als Jay-Z ihr Mixtape Blank Canvas auf seiner Webpage Jay-Z’s Live and Times veröffentlichte.[11]

Little Simz (2019)

Ende 2016 veröffentlichte Simz ihr Multimedia-Projekt Stillness in Wonderland. Neben einem gleichnamigen Album erschien Stillness in Wonderland – The Film, ein Kurzfilm bei dem Jeremy Cole Regie führte, sowie die auf vier Teile angelegte Comic-Miniserie Welcome to Wonderland (Autor: Eddie Smith, Zeichner Mckay Felt). Zur Veröffentlichung fand in London eine The Stillness in Wonderland Experience genannte Live-Veranstaltung statt. Neben einer Ausstellung mit Werken des Künstlers Mckay Felt traten auf zwei Bühnen Little Simz mit Band und zahlreiche Gastmusiker wie Mick Jenkins, Tiffany Gouché und das Jazz-Ensemble Nérija auf.[18]

Im Rahmen der Welcome to Wonderland Tour bestritt Simz Anfang 2017 ein weiteres Mal zahlreiche Konzerte in Europa, Nordamerika und Australien. Im Februar des Jahres nahm sie mit Musikern der Band Phony Ppl eine Session für die beliebte NPR-Serie Tiny Desk Concerts auf.[19]

Little Simz' Album Grey Area erreichte 2019 Platz 87 der britischen Charts und wurde für den Mercury Prize nominiert.[20] Im Mai 2020 folgte die EP Drop 6, die ihre „persönlichen Erfahrungen und Selbstzweifel in der sozialen Isolation in Folge der Coronavirus-Pandemie“ (ByteFM) behandelt.[21]

Ebenfalls im Corona-bedingten Lockdown, zunächst in London, später in Berlin, schrieb Simz das Album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, das 2021 erschien.[22] Der Titel des 19 Stücke umfassenden Albums ist ein Akronym ihres Rufnamens Simbi. Für ihr Album erhielt Little Simz 2022 den Mercury Prize.[23]

2022 erschien das Album No Thank You, das 10 Songs umfasst. Das Album wurde ohne große Werbekampagne und ohne Single-Auskoppelungen an einem Montag (typischerweise erscheinen Alben am Freitag) veröffentlicht. Mehrere Rezensenten betrachten das Album als „Abrechnung“ mit der Musikindustrie.[24][25][26][27]

Biografisches und Privatleben

Ajikawo kam als Tochter nigerianischer Einwanderer zur Welt.[3] Sie wuchs in ihrem Geburtsort Islington auf, die Familie wohnte in einem Haus, in dem Flüchtlinge vom Sozialamt untergebracht wurden.[28] Sie besuchte die Highbury Fields School in Highbury und war regelmäßige Besucherin des St. Mary’s Youth Club in Islington, wo ihr kreatives Talent gefördert wurde.[10] In der Folge studierte sie Music Technology am Westminster Kingsway College in London.[29]

2018 wurde ihr enger Freund Harry Uzoka, britisches Model und Schauspieler, auf offener Straße ermordet. Simz widmete ihm den Song Wounds auf dem Album Grey Area, in dem sie die traumatische Erfahrung reflektiert.[30]
