Jordi (stylized in all caps) is the seventh studio album by American band Maroon 5. It was released on June 11, 2021, through 222, Interscope and Polydor Records. The album features guest appearances from Megan Thee Stallion, Blackbear, Stevie Nicks, Bantu, H.E.R., YG, and late rappers Juice Wrld and Nipsey Hussle. The deluxe edition of the album features additional guest appearances from Anuel AA, Tainy, and Jason Derulo.

It is the band's first album in four years since Red Pill Blues (2017), and also their first album without longtime bassist Mickey Madden following his arrest in 2020, due to domestic violence (though some of his contributions are heard on tracks 10 & 12).

The album is titled after a nickname of the band's late manager Jordan Feldstein, who died in 2017.[1] The album received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.[2]

Background

One month after the release of Red Pill Blues in November 2017, the band's manager and Adam Levine's childhood friend Jordan Feldstein died of a pulmonary embolism aged 40.[3] Feldstein was the older brother of actors Jonah Hill and Beanie Feldstein. Two years later, the band dedicated the song "Memories" to him.[4] The song went on to become a worldwide success—it is the first single released from the album and it appears on the track listing in two versions (alongside the original version of the song, the album also includes a remix, featuring American rappers Nipsey Hussle & YG). The album was recorded between 2019 and 2021 (prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic).[5][6][7][8]

On April 29, 2021, the band announced the album and was available for pre-order on the same day.[9] The track listing for the deluxe edition was announced on May 24, 2021.[10]

Singles

The album is promoted by five singles. The first single, "Memories", was released on September 20, 2019.[11] The song debuted at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, later peaking at number 2 and becoming the band's tenth top-5 single, as well as their fifteenth top-10 single. The second single, "Nobody's Love", was released on July 24, 2020.[12] The song was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests.[13] It peaked at 41 and 119 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200, respectively.

The third single, "Beautiful Mistakes", a collaboration with American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, was released on March 3, 2021,[14] also with a lyric video.[15] The official music video was released on March 11, 2021, and was directed by Sophie Muller.[16] The song peaked at 13 and 26 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Global 200, respectively.[17][18] The fourth single, "Lost", was released alongside the album on June 11, 2021, along with an official music video.[19] The fifth and final single "Lovesick", was sent to Italian radio on January 7, 2022.[20]

Musician Bantu released a remix version of the album's song "One Light" on August 5, 2022, with the band and featuring artists Yung Bleu and Latto.[21]

Jordi received mixed to negative reviews from critics. Aggerator Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 48 out of 100, based on 9 reviews, it garned "mixed to average reviews", This is the lowest score of any the 381 albums listed on Metacritic from 2021.[22]

Writing for NME, El Hunt reported that, with Jordi, Maroon 5 were "more visible, and, at times, vulnerable", describing the two versions of "Memories" as "sharp pop songs with both substance and heart". Talking about the collaborations, Hunt detailed that Stevie Nicks' contribution to "Remedy" sounded like "a corrupted Siri singing country-western", and described Jason Derulo's collaboration with Levine, "Lifestyle," as "silly" and "slightly overdone". She remarked that the addition of Juice Wrld on "Can't Leave You Alone" "serves little purpose", and that his verse is "wedged into the middle of an otherwise unremarkable break-up song".[29]

In a negative review, Kate Solomon of i described the songs on the album as "generic but hypnotic melodies over generic but danceable beats", saying that the songs were "banal" and "advertisement-friendly". While Solomon highlighted the inclusion of H.E.R. and Megan Thee Stallion, she described the posthumous appearances by Nipsey Hussle and Juice Wrld as "unmemorable". Solomon remarked that the album is "perfectly crafted to please crowds, to slip into your consciousness without you really realising [sic]".[27] In a similar review, The Guardian's Alexis Petridis described the album as "a plethora of well-worn 21st-century pop tropes – tropical house sounds, post-Tame Impala floaty synths – but nothing you would describe as novel in the music or lyrics". He likened Maroon 5 to a blank canvas, saying that the band was "reliant on guest artists to inject personality and songwriters and producers to come up with the goods". He highlighted Bantu and Thee Stallion's contributions, describing them as "fiery" and "a surprise", respectively, but described the rest of the album as a "mixed bag", and remarked that the songs felt "too calculated for their own good".[26]

Commercial performance

In the United States, Jordi debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 37,000 equivalent units, which consisted of 15,000 pure album sales, marking the group's lowest first week album sales.[33] Despite this, it also marks the group's seventh top ten effort on the charts since their debut album Songs About Jane. As of June 22, 2021, the album has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for moving 500,000 units in the country alone.[34]

Maroon 5 ist eine US-amerikanische Pop-Rock-Band aus Los Angeles. Sie wurde ab 2004 durch Songs wie This Love, She Will Be Loved und Moves like Jagger bekannt.

Geschichte

Kara’s Flowers

Drei der Bandmitglieder kannten sich bereits, seit sie gemeinsam die Junior High School in Los Angeles besucht hatten. Als sie die Brentwood School besuchten, schlossen sich Adam Levine, Mickey Madden und Ryan Dusick an, die bereits zusammen Musik machten und gründeten die Band Kara’s Flowers, eine Garagenrock-/Grunge-Band, die ihren ersten Auftritt im Whisky A Go-Go im September 1995 hatte. Zu dieser Zeit sang Adam Levine noch mit einer tieferen Stimme im Grunge-Stil.

Während die Bandmitglieder noch die High School besuchten, schloss die Band einen Vertrag mit Reprise Records und veröffentlichte 1997 ihr Album The Fourth World, als gerade drei der vier Mitglieder ihren Schulabschluss machten. Zu Soap Disco, dem ersten Stück auf dem Album, wurde ein Video gedreht, das aber auf MTV keinen Erfolg hatte. Trotz Tourneen mit Reel Big Fish und Goldfinger brachte das Album kaum Geld ein. 1999 trennte sich die Band von Reprise Records. 2001 unterschrieb Maroon 5 einen Vertrag mit Octone Records, einem unabhängigen Label in New York.

Songs About Jane

Die Gruppe nahm ihr Debütalbum Songs About Jane in Los Angeles mit dem Produzenten Matt Wallace auf, der schon mit Bands wie Blues Traveler und Third Eye Blind gearbeitet hatte. Zu vielen Liedern auf dem Album war die Band unmittelbar durch Adam Levines turbulenter Beziehung zu seiner Ex-Freundin Jane inspiriert worden. Levine sagte zu dem Titel des Albums:

„Wir machten gerade Schluss, als die Band mit den Studioaufnahmen startete. Nach dem Aufstellen einer Liederliste entschieden wir uns das Album Songs About Jane zu nennen, weil wir meinten, dass wir mit diesem Titel die ehrlichste Aussage machen konnten.“[2]

She Will Be Loved wird in dem Film Mit dir an meiner Seite gespielt und befindet sich auch auf dem Soundtrack zum Film.

Umbesetzung

Im September 2006 wurde auf der Website von Maroon 5 bekanntgegeben, dass Ryan Dusick nicht mehr Schlagzeuger der Band sei. Aufgrund anhaltender Schulterprobleme, die beim Spielen am Schlagzeug starke Schmerzen verursachen, musste er seinen Austritt bekanntgeben. Ersetzt wurde er durch Matt Flynn, der ihn schon seit über zwei Jahren vertreten hatte. Allerdings hatte sich Dusick nach seinem Ausstieg nicht völlig von der Band zurückgezogen. Er war als Musical Director für das Album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, das 2007 erschien, mitverantwortlich.

Hands All Over

Im September 2010 veröffentlichte die Band ihr drittes Studioalbum, Hands All Over. Es konnte sich im deutschsprachigen Raum sofort nach Veröffentlichung in den Top 20 der Albumcharts platzieren, wobei es aber nicht an den Erfolg der Vorgänger anknüpfen konnte. Im August 2011 wurde eine Re-Edition des Albums veröffentlicht, die mit Moves like Jagger (feat. Christina Aguilera) und einem Cover des Queen-Hits Crazy Little Thing Called Love zwei zusätzliche Stücke enthielt. Besonders Moves like Jagger etablierte sich schnell als Hit und platzierte sich auf Platz zwei der deutschen Singlecharts.

Overexposed

Im März 2012 gab die Band bekannt, dass Gründungsmitglied, Keyboarder, Rhythmus-Gitarrist und Hintergrund-Sänger Jesse Carmichael die Band auf unbestimmte Zeit verlasse. Die Gruppe würde die Arbeit an ihrem vierten Studioalbum mit der Hilfe von PJ Morton weiterführen, der die Band schon seit einiger Zeit bei Touren begleitet hatte. Danach teilte die Band mit, dass im Juni 2012 ihr viertes Studioalbum, Overexposed erscheine. Die erste Singleauskopplung, Payphone, erschien im April 2012 und wurde zusammen mit Wiz Khalifa aufgenommen. Außerdem sind auf dem Album elf weitere neue Songs enthalten. Adam Levine bezeichnete das neue Album, „als die bisher […] vielschichtigste und zugleich poppigste Platte, die [sie] jemals gemacht haben. […]“[3] Payphone erreichte Platz 1 in Großbritannien.

Die zweite Single aus dem Album, One More Night, erschien im September 2012 in Deutschland und erreichte dort Platz 42 der Charts,[4] während sie sich in den USA bis an die Spitze der Hitlisten kämpfen konnte. Zwei weitere Singles, Daylight (veröffentlicht weltweit im November 2012) und Love Somebody (veröffentlicht weltweit im Mai 2013), waren in vielen Ländern ebenfalls sehr erfolgreich.

V und Red Pill Blues

Im April 2014 bestätigte Carmichael, dass er seine zweijährige Pause beenden und zur Band zurückkehren zu wollen. Im Mai gaben Maroon 5 bekannt, dass sie einen Vertrag mit Interscope Records unterzeichnet hätten, um ihr fünftes Studioalbum V aufzunehmen. In Deutschland erschien es im August 2014.[5] Das Album war von 2013 bis 2014 mit den Produzenten Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, Shellback und Sam Martin aufgenommen worden. Zudem wurde ein Vertrag mit Live Nation für eine weltweite Tour abgeschlossen.[6] Im August 2015 wurden die Singles Maps und Animals in Deutschland veröffentlicht,[7][8]

Der langjährige Manager der Band, Jordan Feldstein (Bruder von Jonah Hill und Beanie Feldstein), starb im Dezember 2017, nur wenige Wochen nach dem Erscheinen des sechsten Studioalbums Red Pill Blues. Aus Anlass der Aufnahmen war der Multiinstrumentalist Sam Farrar, der die Band bereits seit 2012 als Livemusiker begleitet hatte, als Vollmitglied aufgenommen worden.

Jordi

Im März erschien in Zusammenarbeit mit Megan Thee Stallion der Song Beautiful Mistakes. Das Lied erreichte auf Spotify mehr als neun Millionen Abrufe.[9] Am 11. Juni 2021 erschien ihr siebtes Studioalbum Jordi.

Stil

Durch den Beitritt von Valentine erweiterte sich der Stil der Band um Elemente aus Soul, Funk und Rhythm & Blues. Zu den weiteren Einflüssen der Band gehören Prince und AC/DC. Kritiker verglichen die Lieder ebenfalls mit den Red Hot Chili Peppers (She Will Be Loved), einem jugendlichen Stevie Wonder (Sunday Morning), mit The Police (Won’t Go Home Without You) und den Beach Boys.[10]

Auf dem zweiten Album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long wurde der Stil durch den neuen Schlagzeuger Matt Flynn zunächst ein wenig härter.[11] Seit dem dritten Album hingegen wurden die Rockeinflüsse immer mehr zugunsten von tanzbarer elektronischer Musik zurückgedrängt.
