Exile on Mainstream is the first compilation album by American rock band Matchbox Twenty. The album was released in two parts: the first was an EP, featuring seven new songs that emerged from a 12-song recording session, produced by Steve Lillywhite. The other part consists of remastered versions of 11 of the band's biggest hits.

Recording

Matchbox Twenty had been on hiatus since 2005, when Adam Gaynor had left the band. In 2007, the remaining four group members reunited in Los Angeles to do a compilation album, and ended up recording seven new songs over the course of one session. For the first time, every member of the group worked on songwriting. All seven of the new songs on the album were credited to the members of Matchbox Twenty, a first for the group. Prior to this, the songs either were credited to Rob Thomas himself or co-written with various members of the band. Paul Doucette, originally the band's drummer, played rhythm guitar due to Adam Gaynor's departure.[5]

The album's title is a reference to the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St.[6]

Release

The album was available for pre-order on September 4, 2007 from iTunes. The full album was released on VH1's "The Leak" one week before release. It leaked onto the Internet on September 28, 2007, four days ahead of the official release date. The album was released on October 2, 2007, exactly 11 years and one day since the release of the band's debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You. The album debuted on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart on October 8, 2007 at number-one with sales of 18,199 units.[7] In the U.S., the album debuted at number-three on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 131,000 copies in its first week.[8] The album was released in a USB wristband format as well as the 2-CD edition making Matchbox Twenty the first band to do so.

The first single, "How Far We've Come", was released on July 16, 2007, and charted in the top 10 in Australia[9] and in the top 20 in the United States. Paul Doucette announced in mid-October that "These Hard Times" would be released as the album's second single in early 2008. In Australia, "All Your Reasons" was released as the second single instead of "These Hard Times", and the single is available on the Australian iTunes Store.

The album has sold 660,319 copies as of June 7, 2008 and was certified gold in the United States.

Matchbox Twenty (ursprünglich Matchbox 20) ist eine Rockband aus Orlando im US-Bundesstaat Florida. Neben den fünf Bandmitgliedern Rob Thomas, Brian Yale, Paul Doucette, Adam Gaynor und Kyle Cook gilt Produzent Matt Serletic als inoffizielles sechstes Mitglied. Weltweit verkaufte die Band über 20 Millionen Alben.

Geschichte

Rob Thomas, Brian Yale (Spitzname: Pookie) und Paul Doucette spielten zuerst in der Band Tabitha’s Secret, bevor sie 1995 zusammen mit Adam Gaynor und Kyle Cook Matchbox 20 gründeten.

1996 erschien ihr erstes Album Yourself or Someone Like You (1996), das mit über zwölf Millionen verkauften Exemplaren ihr mit Abstand erfolgreichstes und das neunt-erfolgreichste Debütalbum überhaupt ist[1] und u. a. die Singles Push und 3 A.M. enthält.

1999 waren Thomas und Serletic als Songwriter und Leadsänger bzw. Produzent an Carlos Santanas Welthit Smooth beteiligt, der 2000 u. a. drei Grammy Awards gewann und 2008 auf Platz 2 der „Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs“ von Billboard erschien.[2]

2000 änderte die Gruppe mit der Veröffentlichung ihres zweiten Albums Mad Season die Schreibweise des Bandnamens in Matchbox Twenty.

Nachdem die Band mit diesem Album knapp zwei Jahre auf Tour war, machte sie ab Oktober 2001 eine Pause, in der die Mitglieder sich ihren Familien und anderen Projekten widmeten. Rob Thomas schrieb in dieser Zeit Songs u. a. für Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Carlos Santana und Marc Anthony.

Im April 2002 traten Matchbox Twenty anlässlich des Konzerts Willie Nelson and Friends: Stars and Guitars in Nashville wieder zusammen auf.

Die Arbeiten zum dritten Album More Than You Think You Are begannen im Juni 2002 in den Bearsville Studios in Woodstock im Bundesstaat New York. Die abschließenden Arbeiten fanden in der Hit Factory in New York City statt. Erstmals sind auf diesem Album im Gegensatz zu den vorherigen, in denen Rob Thomas als Hauptkomponist auftrat, auch Beiträge vorhanden, an denen die anderen Bandmitglieder mitschrieben (Feel, Soul von Paul Doucette und Kyle Cook), teilweise sogar ausschließlich (Could I Be You von Paul Doucette).

Im Mai 2004 erschien die Doppel-DVD Show: A Night in the Life of Matchbox Twenty. Die erste DVD enthält 20 Live-Songs, die zweite Zusatzmaterial wie Songtexte und Dokumentationen.

Anschließend nahm die Band eine Auszeit, um eigene Projekte und persönliche Interessen zu verfolgen. So hatte Rob Thomas seitdem verschiedene erfolgreiche Veröffentlichungen als Solokünstler. Adam Gaynor verließ im Februar 2005 die Gruppe.

Das Album Exile on Mainstream, eine Mischung aus bekannten Hits und neu aufgenommenen Liedern wurde in Deutschland am 28. September, in den USA am 2. Oktober 2007 veröffentlicht. Dort wurde außerdem eine limitierte Sonderedition in Form eines Armbands mit integriertem USB-Stick versteigert.[3] Als Singles wurden How Far We’ve Come und These Hard Times ausgekoppelt.

Am 4. September 2012 wurde das Album North veröffentlicht.
