    Supernova is the second full-length album by British rock duo Nova Twins, released 17 June 2022 by Marshall Records. The album peaked at No. 14[2] and No. 27 on the Scottish and UK album charts, respectively, and was nominated for the 2022 Mercury Prize.[3]

    Background

    The album's impending release was announced in February 2022, with the songs "Antagonist", "K.M.B.", "Cleopatra", "Puzzles" and "Choose Your Fighter" issued as singles to preview the album.[4][5] The album's lyrics are inspired by Nova Twins' experiences playing live before increasingly diverse audiences, after a long layoff from touring during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was particularly challenging because their previous album Who Are the Girls? was beginning to attract critical notice just before the onset of the pandemic.[6][7] The album is also inspired by the racial justice developments of the period.[8] As described by the band: "making this album became our medicine through a turbulent time. It’s a reflection of where we were and how far we have come, encased in a fantasy world that we imagined."[4]

    Critical reception

    The album received critical acclaim upon its release. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, it received an average score of 92, based on 10 reviews indicating "Universal acclaim".[9] The Guardian praised the album's "sharp, concise songwriting [that] makes for a mindblowing blast of distorted noise-pop – and destroys the narrative about who gets to make rock music."[10] Many reviewers noted the Nova Twins' blending of disparate genres, with Distorted Sound proclaiming that the album "show[s] that genre is worthless."[7] NME called the album "More dynamic, more experimental and with far more range than what’s come before."[11] Consequence reached a similar conclusion, stating that "Nova Twins bend and blend genres like alchemists, generating a sound specific to them and the undertones of their social movement."[12]

    The Forty Five called the album "a triumph" that "should make Nova Twins an unignorable force from hereon in."[13] The Line of Best Fit praised the band for "marry[ing] politically charged lyricism with a searing amalgamation of genres, producing an album that practically begs to be experienced in a full-throttle live setting."[14] In its review of the album, Ghost Cult magazine concluded that "Nova Twins are rising as torchbearers for the future of rock music, flawlessly executing elements no one would’ve ever expected to hear from the style ten years ago."[15]

    Nova Twins ist eine englische Rock-Band aus London.

    Geschichte

    Die Band besteht aus der Gitarristin Amy Love und der Bassistin Georgia South, die beide seit ihrer Kindheit befreundet sind. Beide spielten zuvor in verschiedenen Bands, bevor sie im Jahre 2014 die Band BRAATS gründeten und noch im selben Jahr ihre erste Single Bad Bitches veröffentlichten. Ende 2014 wurde der Bandname in Nova Twins geändert, bevor das Duo im April 2015 mit Bassline Bitch ihre erste Single unter dem heutigen Namen veröffentlichte. Das Plattenlabel Robotunes wurde auf die Nova Twins aufmerksam und nahm die Band unter Vertrag. Ein Jahr später wurde die selbst betitelte EP veröffentlicht. Im Jahr 2017 veröffentlichte die Band die EPs Thelma and Louise sowie Mood Swings und tourte im Vorprogramm von Prophets of Rage, Wolf Alice und Skunk Anansie.[1]

    Ein Jahr später folgten weitere Tourneen durch Europa und Nordamerika. Ende 2018 nahmen die Nova Twins mit dem Produzenten Jim Abbiss ihr Debütalbum auf. Das Jahr 2019 brachten weitere Tournee im Vorprogramm von Fever 333 und Prophets of Rage sowie Auftritte bei den Festivals Nova Rock, Open Air Gampel und Hellfest. Ende des Jahres wurden die Nova Twins vom Plattenlabel 333 Wreckords Crew unter Vertrag genommen. Am 28. Februar 2020 erschien das Debütalbum Who Are the Girls?. Bei den Heavy Music Awards 2020 wurde das Duo in der Kategorie Best UK Breakthrough Artist ausgezeichnet.[2] Die Nova Twins traten bei dem Lied 1×1 von Bring Me the Horizon als Gastsängerinnen auf.[3]

    Ein Jahr später erhielt die Band den Preis für das beste Video.[4] Ebenfalls 2021 traten die Nova Twins bei den Reading and Leeds Festivals auf. Anschließend nahm das Duo zusammen mit Jim Abbiss und Romesh Dodangoda ihr zweites Studioalbum Supernova auf. Dieses erschien am 17. Juni 2022 über Marshall Records und erreichte Platz 27 der britischen Albumcharts. Die Band gewann bei den Kerrang! Awards 2022 in der Kategorie Best British Breakthrough[5] und wurde für den Mercury Prize und den NME Awards in den Kategorien Best Band in the World und Best Band from the UK nominiert.[6][7] Die Preise gingen jedoch an Little Simz, Fontaines D. C. bzw. Bring Me the Horizon. Im Sommer 2022 spielte die Band bei den Festivals Frequency und Slam Dunk Festival. Das britische Magazin Kerrang kürte die Nova Twins zur Band des Jahres 2022 und Supernova zum Album des Jahres.[8][9]

    Die Nova Twins wurden bei den BRIT Awards 2023 in den Kategorien Group of the Year und Best Rock / Alternative Act nominiert.[10] Die Preise gingen jedoch an die Bands Wet Leg bzw. The 1975.

    Stil

    James Wilkinson von Allmusic beschrieb die Nova Twins als ein Duo, das „innovativ Grime, Punk und Heavy Rock mit einem D.I.Y.-Ethos“ verbindet. Paul Lester vom The Guardian beschrieb die Nova Twins als „basslastigen Krach mit jähzornig-anspielenden Gesang“.[11] Alex Rusted vom Onlinemagazin PRS for Music bezeichnete die Nova Twins als genrebiegende Verschmelzung von roher Punkenergie, der Elektronik eines illegalen Rave und einer unverfrorenen Grimeattitüde.[12] Die Band selbst bezeichnet ihren Stil als „Urban Punk“ und nennen Bands und Künstler wie MC5, Missy Elliott, Skunk Anansie und Skepta als Einflüsse. Amy Love besuchte die British Academy of New Music in London. Zu ihren Kommilitonen damals gehörten Ed Sheeran und Rita Ora.[11]
