The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy is the seventh studio album by American heavy metal musician Rob Zombie. The album was released on March 12, 2021, by Nuclear Blast.[3][4] It received positive reviews upon release.[5] It was Rob Zombie's first album to reach No. 1 at the Billboard's Top Album Sales Chart in the US in the first week of its release.[6] It was the last album to feature long time guitarist John 5 and bassist Piggy D., the former joining Mötley Crüe.

Development

"Whenever we start making a record, we don't work in a sense where we go into a rehearsal space and jam and come up with riffs — we don't function like that". "When I start, day one of recording, there's no music that exists — we just record as we create. And after all these years, you kind of are just trying to find new things to do. Because there's a certain formula you have, or you could have, that it would take about two seconds to write 'that' type of song. But you always wanna try to figure out new avenues that you can explore. And that's really what it is."

In 2018, Rob Zombie stated in an interview with "Whiplash", the KLOS radio show hosted by Full Metal Jackie, that the music on his upcoming album will be "much more complicated structurally".[7] According to Rob, his goal on his next album has once again been to explore new territory without deviating too much from his tried-and-tested formula.[7]

The original plan was to release the album in 2019. During an interview at January 2019, John 5 described the album on a Talk Toomey podcast as "hooky and musical, and badass. The best Zombie record to date—better than White Zombie anything… He went nuts on this one. I'm telling you, it's the best Zombie record you guys will hear. And we're going to have a big tour. We're going to do videos, and you know, I've been in the band with the guy forever and I just love him".[citation needed] Later in the same year with an interview with Revolver, John 5 said of the new music as "Heavy, very heavy. It's just a heavy Zombie record with great hooks. It's very, very musical, and a hard-hitting Zombie record. I think people are really gonna dig it. I'm a Zombie fan, and if I heard it, I'd be like, 'Oh my God, this is brutal.' I'm really excited about it!".[8]

In the same year, Rob Zombie spoke about his much anticipated seventh album release to NME in 2019 saying that "The record's definitely finished and…I think it's the best record we've ever made. It's a very big, crazy and complex record that I'm really excited to finally be able to release. I just had to get everything with 3 From Hell completely finished before we got into that, but my plan now is to start shooting some big videos for the album around January so that we can release it early next year."[9] Zombie's subsequent plan was to release the new album in February 2020.[9]

Early October 2020, John 5 stated to Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station about the status of Rob Zombie's long-awaited new studio album saying that "You will be seeing something soon," John 5 said. "That's all I say. Very, very, very soon. It's coming very soon… We're excited. I'm more excited than anyone, that's for sure."[10] At the end of the same month, Rob Zombie announced the album's title as "The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy" and its track listing with a release date at March 12, 2021.[9]

Commercial performance

This is the first studio album of Rob Zombie that reached No. 1 at the Billboard's Top Album Sales Chart with 26,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending March 18.[6] It also was Zombie's fourth No. 1 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts eclipsing his prior No. 5 best set with 1998's Hellbilly Deluxe, 2006's Educated Horses and 2016's The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser.[11]

On Metacritic, the album has a rating of 64 out of 100 based on five reviews, indicating generally favourable reviews.[5] Consequence reported that the "instrumentation and lyrics are equal parts memorable and evil. Let's face it, memorable and evil are two traits any fan would want from a Rob Zombie album" awarding the album a score of "B+".[13] AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5 writing that "Inscrutably titled and strange as ever, the veteran rock icon sticks close to his established aesthetic: a sexed-up, sci-fi, psychedelic gore-fest packed with ghoulish cult-horror schlock, breakneck riffs, and pummeling delivery."[12] Kerrang! called the album "a familiar ride, but one that's hard to beat", awarding it a 3 out of 5 stars rating and criticising the album's length while praising the singles "The Triumph of King Freak (A Crypt of Preservation and Superstition)" and "The Eternal Struggles of the Howling Man" due to "their turbocharged drive".[14] Rolling Stone said the album "offers the same disco-metal dreck [Zombie has been] been peddling for 30 years," giving it 1.5 out of 5 stars.[15]

Rob Zombie (* 12. Januar 1965 in Haverhill, Massachusetts; gebürtig Robert Bartleh Cummings) ist ein US-amerikanischer Rockmusiker, Regisseur und Comicautor.

Leben

Nachdem Rob Zombie um 1985 nach New York gezogen war, wurde er Frontmann und Sänger der Band White Zombie, die ihren Namen von dem Horrorfilm White Zombie mit Bela Lugosi übernommen hat. Daneben jobbte er u. a. für ein Pornomagazin, eine Kinder-TV-Produktion und als Fahrradkurier.

Zombie arbeitet seit 1996 nur noch als Solokünstler, nachdem er schon 1994 einige Soloprojekte begonnen hatte – unter anderem komponierte er die Musik zum Film Private Parts. Stilistisch ist seine Musik dem Industrial Metal zuzuordnen und vereint eingängige, melodische Gitarrenriffs mit Industrial-Rhythmen und elektronischen Effekten. Seine Texte beinhalten meist Motive aus dem Horror-Genre.

Live im Jahr 2011

Zombie produzierte 2003 mit Johnny Ramone die Kompilation A Tribute to the Ramones, u. a. mit Ramones-Coverversionen von Metallica, den Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson und ihm selbst.

Er führte bei den Videoclips seiner Band immer selbst Regie (mit Ausnahme des Videos zu „Thunderkiss ’65“), welche auf der Best-of-CD Past, Present & Future als Bonus zu sehen sind. Außerdem führte er Regie beim ersten, winterlich thematisierten, der beiden Musikvideos zu Dreamer von Ozzy Osbourne. 2003 erschien sein erster Film House of 1000 Corpses, der trotz seiner anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten, einen Verleih zu finden, zu einem großen Erfolg wurde. Im Jahr 2005 erschien mit The Devil’s Rejects sein zweiter Film, eine lose Fortführung der Geschichte von House of 1000 Corpses. Außerdem wirkte er beim Kinofilm Beavis und Butt-Head machen’s in Amerika mit. Er kreierte die Sequenz des mit Halluzinationen erfüllten Drogentrips, den Beavis in einer Wüste erlebt.

2005 erschien die „Deluxe Edition“ seines Albums Hellbilly Deluxe. Sein Album Educated Horses erschien am 28. März 2006 und hat seinen Stil etwas geändert. Im Jahr 2010 erschien Hellbilly Deluxe 2, welches musikalisch eine Mischung aus seiner ersten und letzten Scheibe ist. Ab Anfang 2010 ging Zombie mit Alice Cooper auf eine ausgedehnte US-Tour, auf die 2011 auch einige Europakonzerte folgten.

2007 drehte Rob Zombie ein Remake von John Carpenters Halloween aus dem Jahre 1978. Bei diesem Film führte er Regie, war Produzent und schrieb das Drehbuch basierend auf dem Originaldrehbuch von John Carpenter und Debra Hill. 2009 folgte die Fortsetzung Halloween 2, die nicht mehr als eigentliche Neuverfilmung gelten kann, da er mit dieser Fortsetzung ausschließlich an seinen ersten Teil anknüpft und in gewisser Weise eine eigene Geschichte bzw. Weiterführung kreiert. 2007 drehte er zudem den Fake-Trailer Werewolf Women of the S.S. für Quentin Tarantinos Death Proof – Todsicher.[3] Zombie schrieb zudem bereits 2008 das Script Tyrannosaurus Rex, welches in Auszügen in einem Comic veröffentlicht wurde, eine Filmumsetzung ist jedoch nicht geplant.[4]

Rob Zombie am Nova Rock 2014

Rob Zombie führte 2010 auch einmalig Regie bei der weltweit populären und erfolgreichen Krimi-Fernsehserie CSI: Miami. Er inszenierte die Episode L. A. (deutsch Schatten einer Schuld), in der auch die bekannten Filmschauspieler Malcolm McDowell, Michael Madsen und William Forsythe mitspielen. Erstausstrahlung in den USA war der 1. März 2010. Weitere Regiearbeiten vor allem im Horrorbereich folgten. 2022 drehte er mit The Munsters eine Neuauflage der Serie The Munsters.

Rob Zombie ist seit 2002 mit Sheri Moon Zombie verheiratet, mit der er zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits neun Jahre liiert war. Sie war oft das Cover-Girl auf seinen Alben und wirkte auch teilweise in seinen Videoclips mit. Außerdem verkörperte sie in den beiden Filmen Haus der 1000 Leichen und The Devil’s Rejects die Rolle der Baby Firefly. Rob Zombie ist der ältere Bruder von Spider One, dem Frontmann der Band Powerman 5000.

Im Jahr 2011 war Rob Zombie auf Deutschland-Tour. Die Tour begann mit einem Special-Guest-Auftritt beim Rock am Ring – es folgten noch Oberhausen, Berlin und Hamburg. Dies war die erste Tour seit 13 Jahren in Deutschland.

Nebenbei ist Rob Zombie auch als Comicautor beschäftigt. Zwei Werke sind im Dark Horse Verlag erschienen: The Nail und Bigfoot. 2012 zeichnete er das Album-Cover für God Told Me To von John 5.[5] Zombie kündigte im Juni 2012 Broad Street Bullies an, welches in seiner Story die 70er Jahre des Eishockeyvereines der Philadelphia Flyers erzählt.[6]
