Linger Awhile is the second studio album by American jazz singer Samara Joy, released on September 16, 2022, through Verve Records. It was produced by Matt Pierson. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album and was responsible for Joy also winning Best New Artist at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.[1]

Following Joy's wins, the album reached number 158 on the US Billboard 200 and reached number one on the Jazz Albums chart with 8,500 album-equivalent units.[2]

Peter Moore of Jazzwise called Linger Awhile a "staggeringly fine album", noting "Guess Who I Saw Today" as a standout, and remarked on the "outstanding support from guitarist Pasquale Grasso, pianist Ben Paterson, bassist David Wong and drummer Kenny Washington" on the title track. Moore also called Joy's version of "'Round Midnight" a "wondrous take" and praised the "incredibly beautiful timbre" of her voice on "Someone to Watch Over Me".[4] Veronica Johnson of JazzTimes found "much to be admired" and a "musical maturation" on the album, writing that it is a "nostalgic stroll through well-known and obscure standards" with a "mixing of swing and sweet tunes", complimenting "the romantic feel [Joy] infuses into songs".[5]

Angelo Leonardi of All About Jazz commended Joy's partnership with guitarist Pasquale Grasso, opining that it is "inspiring" and "stands out" on "Someone to Watch Over Me", and felt that Joy "confirms all the good things that have been said about her: unusual interpretative maturity for her age, fresh chromatic variety, creative flair, [and] intense feeling", naming Linger Awhile album of the week.[3]

Samara Joy McLendon (* 11. November 1999 in New York) ist eine US-amerikanische Jazzsängerin.[1] Bei den Grammy Awards 2023 gewann sie zwei Grammys.

Leben und Wirken

Joy wuchs in der Bronx auf und wurde früh musikalisch geprägt: Ihre Großeltern väterlicherseits, Elder Goldwire und Ruth McLendon, leiteten die Gospelgruppe The Savettes. Ihr Vater tourte als Bassist und Begleitsänger mit dem Gospelstar Andraé Crouch. Doch erst als Jugendliche begann sie in ihrer Kirche im Gospelchor zu singen. Allererste Erfahrungen mit Jazz sammelte sie auf der Fordham High School for the Arts, wo sie gelegentlich, eher beiläufig in der Jazzband sang, aber beim Wettbewerb Essentially Ellington des Jazz at Lincoln Center als beste Sängerin ausgezeichnet wurde. Am Purchase College der State University of New York wurde sie in das Jazzprogramm aufgenommen. 2019 gewann sie die Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.[3] 2021 absolvierte sie ihr Studium in Purchase.

2021 erschien bei Whirlwind Recordings Joys gleichnamiges Debütalbum, auf dem sie Gitarrist Pasquale Grasso mit seinem Trio bestehend aus Ari Roland und Kenny Washington begleitete; das Album wurde aufgrund ihrer „bemerkenswert reifen Interpretationen von Jazz-Standards aus dem Great American Songbook“[4] positiv aufgenommen.[5] Im selben Jahr war sie bereits erstmals auf Tournee in Europa, wo sie auch in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club begeisterte.[6] Bei Verve Records folgte 2022 ihr Album Linger Awhile, das gleichfalls gute Kritiken erhielt.[7] Es brachte ihr 2023 bei den Grammy Awards 2023, wo sie auch in der Premiere Show auftrat,[8] sowohl einen Grammy als bestes Jazz-Gesangsalbum des Jahres ein[9] als auch die Auszeichnung als „Best New Artist“.[10] Ende 2023 folgte die Weihnachts-EP A Joyful Holiday.

Joy trat zudem mit Christian McBride, Kirk Lightsey, Cyrus Chestnut, Barry Harris und Emmet Cohen auf.
