Convocations is the ninth studio album by American musician Sufjan Stevens, released through Asthmatic Kitty on May 6, 2021.[1] Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic following the death of Stevens's father, the album was released in five volumes, with a combined total of 49 instrumental songs.[2][3]

Background and recording

Convocations, as described by Stevens' label, Asthmatic Kitty, is "a 49-track reflection on a year of anxiety, uncertainty, isolation, and loss."[4] The album's five volumes each represent one of the five stages of grief, motivated by the death of Stevens' biological father on September 27, 2020, just two days after the release of his previous studio album, The Ascension.[5]

Regarding his decision to record a purely instrumental album, Stevens noted: "I think this past year I've just felt so overwhelmed with the content of the world, the pandemic and all the extreme sort of political movements and racial inequity. And then the terror of this invisible plague. All of that is just like weighing bearing down on all of us every day. I felt like I had almost been rendered speechless, in a way. [...] I wanted to create music that didn't have a narrative and didn't have verbal content."[5]

Release

The album's first single, "Meditation V", was released on April 6, and the first of five volumes, Meditations, was released on April 8, 2021.[6] Lamentations was released on April 15.[7] Revelations was released on April 22.[8] Celebrations was released on April 29, and Incantations was released on May 6, 2021.[1]

Regarding the album's springtime release, Stevens noted: "I recorded most of this in the dead of winter and now it's coming out in the spring. And I think that really, it's a serendipity in a way, that it allows for us to receive this music with hope, you know, for the future. And that's I think that's something that we all deserve and need more than ever right now."[4]

Each of the volumes and tracks of Convocations are accompanied by a generative video art piece created by Mexican artist "Melissa Santamaría".

Composition

Convocations is an ambient,[9][10] electronic,[9] and space music[11] album that contains elements of progressive electronic,[9] shoegaze,[9] drone,[9] and space jazz.[9]

Sufjan Stevens (2015)

Sufjan Stevens (* 1. Juli 1975 in Detroit, Michigan) ist ein US-amerikanischer Singer-Songwriter und Multiinstrumentalist in New York. Unter anderem spielt er Gitarre, Banjo, Klavier, Orgel, Bass, Oboe, Saxophon, Querflöte, Akkordeon und Schlagzeug.

Leben

Seine Musik ist im Folk- und Independent-Genre anzusiedeln. Stevens kreierte für die beiden US-Bundesstaaten Michigan und Illinois jeweils ein eigenes Album (Greetings from Michigan und Come On Feel the Illinoise!). Unklarheit herrscht über den Wahrheitswert der weitverbreiteten Meldung, dass er auch für die restlichen Staaten der USA eigene Alben aufnehmen werde. Es finden sich sowohl bestätigende als auch dementierende Interviewaussagen, oft in einem selbstironischen Zusammenhang.

Während sich sein Erstling A Sun Came noch überwiegend in den Bereichen Folk, Indie- und Gitarrenrock bewegte, experimentierte er auf dem Instrumental-Album Enjoy Your Rabbit mit elektronischen Klängen und Elementen Neuer Musik. Mit den folgenden Alben fand Stevens zu einem eigenwilligen Stil, der Folk- und Rock-Elemente mit komplex arrangierten Orchestrierungen, mehrstimmigen Chören und der vertrackten Rhythmik des Art Rock verbindet.

Im Jahr 2005 erhielt Sufjan Stevens den New Pantheon Award (auch Shortlist Music Prize) für sein Album Illinois[1] und konnte sich dabei gegen nominierte Interpreten wie Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Antony & The Johnsons, Bloc Party und The Decemberists durchsetzen.

Die Songs Chicago und No Man’s Land von den Alben Come On Feel the Illinoise! und The Avalanche wurden im Jahr 2006 für den Independent-Film Little Miss Sunshine verwendet[2]. Außerdem wurde sein Song For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti für die Fernsehserie O.C., California bei der Beerdigung Johnnys verwendet. Weiterhin ist sein Song John Wayne Gacy, Jr. in der 3. Staffel der Serie Nip/Tuck – Schönheit hat ihren Preis zu hören.

The perpetual self, or „What would Saul Alinsky do“ vom Album The Avalanche erlangte im Jahr 2010 Berühmtheit als Titel für den Trailer des Films Babies. Unter den Bezeichnungen s/s/s und Sisyphus produzierte Sufjan Stevens gemeinsam mit Son Lux und Serengeti 2012 die EP Beak & Claw und 2014 das Album Sisyphus.

Das siebte Studioalbum Carrie & Lowell, welches 2015 erschien, erhielt hervorragende Kritiken und wurde von vielen Kritikern als Sufjans beste Arbeit bezeichnet. Unter anderem wurde es als eines der besten Alben des Jahres angesehen. Auf Carrie & Lowell thematisierte Stevens seine schwierige Kindheit und den Tod seiner Mutter.[3]

Für den Titel Mystery of Love aus dem Film Call Me by Your Name war Stevens 2018 für den Oscar nominiert. Ende Juni 2018 wurde Stevens ein Mitglied der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[4]

2020 veröffentlichte Stevens das Album The Ascension; seine Musik war vielschichtiger und komplexer als seine letzten Alben. Auf diesem besonders elektronischen Album bezog die Musik ihre Spannung aus den Kontrasten zwischen der entrückten Stimme von Stevens und den klöppelnden Drumpattern. Außerdem nahm Stevens in diesem Jahr mit seinem Stiefvater Lowell Brams das Album Aporia auf, das von New-Age-Synthesizern geprägt ist und sich in der Nähe einer hauntologischen Klangästhetik bewegt.[5]

2023 gab Stevens im September bekannt, am Guillain-Barré-Syndrom erkrankt zu sein, das bei ihm zu Lähmungserscheinungen geführt hatte. Zwei Wochen lang wurde er in einem Krankenhaus behandelt.

Im Oktober erschien das zuvor aufgenommene Album Javelin, das er seinem im April des Jahres verstorbenen Lebensgefährten Evans Richardson widmete.[6] Hier kehrte er zu seinen Folkwurzeln zurück und zeigte emotionale Höhen und Tiefen, wobei persönliche Essays im Album darauf hindeuten, dass Stevens möglicherweise seinen Glauben verliert, insbesondere in Bezug auf seine Heimat, die Vereinigten Staaten.[7]
