In It for the Money is the second studio album by English alternative rock band Supergrass, released in 1997. NME called it "more fun than watching a wombat in a washing machine"[2] and named it the 10th best album of the year. In 1998, Q readers voted it the 68th greatest album of all time,[3] while in 2000 the same magazine placed it at number 57 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.[4]

Recording and conception

Only two songs were written before entering Sawmills Studio, so most of the tracks were penned during recording itself.[5]

Recording was often disrupted by the drummer Danny Goffey impromptly going back to London, to record with his and Pearl Lowe's band Lodger. He was told by management that this was unacceptable behaviour. This, along with Gaz Coombes and Goffey's bickering in the music press about the underlying meaning of lyrics to "Going Out", put strain on the recording process.[6]

It is speculated that Parlophone, the record label Supergrass were on, offered the band a sum of money to decide on a final name for the album, because they were taking too long to deliberate.[7][8] However, the band themselves claim that they never received any of this money in return.[9] Other suggestions considered for the title of the album included Hold on to the Handrail and Children of the Monkey Basket (which is now the name of the band's self-run website).[6]

"Richard III" and "Sun Hits the Sky" appear to end with snippets of other, unreleased songs, that play until fade out.

The guitar solo in "Sometimes I Make You Sad" was written during the recording of In It for the Money; it was recorded at half speed then sped up to achieve the mandolin-like sound.[5] The only use of percussion in the song is a cymbal, the drum noises were instead simulated by members of the band making 'grunting' noises. These were then put on a loop.

The album cover is a photograph of the band busking during the filming of the video for their single "Cheapskate". The Japanese edition has, instead, an oil painting by Maff Burley, an old school friend of Danny Goffey. In it, the band is curled up in a circular window at the Old Sawmills at Fowey.[8][10]

The album was critically acclaimed, and peaked at No. 2 in the UK Albums Chart,[21] and sold 300,000 copies in the UK and over one million worldwide. "The fact that it has sold more worldwide than I Should Coco," said Gaz Coombes, "means we can sleep at night."[3]

"In It for the Money is my favourite album of the year…" declared The Prodigy's Liam Howlett at the close of 1997. "It's quality music. 'Richard III' is a top punk tune – that's why I bought the album."[22]

The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[23]

Supergrass war eine britische Rockband aus Oxford, die 1993 aus der Band The Jennifers hervorging und sich 2010 auflöste. Zwischen 2019 und 2022 erfolgte eine Reunion-Tour.

Bandgeschichte

Bevor Gareth Michael Coombes und Daniel Goffey die Gruppe gründeten, spielten sie zwischen 1991 und 1993 in der kurzlebigen Band The Jennifers. Zusammen mit Michael Quinn formierten sie 1993 Supergrass und erhielten schon nach kurzer Zeit einen Plattenvertrag bei Parlophone. Ihr Debütalbum I Should Coco erreichte 1995, auf dem Höhepunkt der Britpop-Welle, die Spitze der britischen Charts, mit der Single-Kombination Alright/Time kamen sie auf Platz 2. Sie wurden bei den NME Awards als beste neue Band ausgezeichnet und erhielten einen Brit Award als bester Newcomer. Das zweite Album erwies sich ebenfalls als erfolgreich und erreichte ebenso wie der Vorgänger Platin-Status in Großbritannien.

1999 erschien das selbstbetitelte dritte Album der Band, auf dem sich der Song Pumping On Your Stereo befindet, der Rang 11 der UK-Charts erreichte. Das vielbeachtete Video zum Song wurde von Hammer & Tongs gedreht.

2002 produzierte Tony Hoffer ihr nächstes Album, Life on Other Planets, das von Dave Sardy gemixt wurde. Seit diesem Album war Rob Coombes vollwertiges Bandmitglied. Einen Teil der anschließenden Tour bestritten sie gemeinsam mit den befreundeten Foo Fighters. Zwei Jahre später feierte die Band ihr zehnjähriges Bestehen mit einer Best-Of-Sammlung. 2005 folgte mit dem in der Normandie aufgenommenen Road to Rouen ein eher ruhiges Album.

Im Juni 2007 beendete die Band in Berlin die Aufnahmen zu ihrem letzten Album. Es wurde im Frühjahr 2008 veröffentlicht und trägt den Titel Diamond Hoo Ha. Erste Auskopplungen aus dem Album waren die Songs Diamond Hoo Ha Man und Bad Blood. Es war das erste Album der Band, das in ihrem Heimatland nicht die Top Ten der Charts erreichte, wobei es von der Kritik überwiegend positiv wahrgenommen wurde.[1] Diamond Hoo Ha wurde auch in die Compilation VPRO Song of the year aufgenommen. 2008 verließ die Band das Plattenlabel Parlophone, wo ihre bisherigen Alben erschienen waren. Sie gründete ihr eigenes Label Supergrass Records und begann mit den Aufnahmen zu einem weiteren Album, das den Arbeitstitel Release the Drones trug, aber nicht mehr vollendet wurde.

Am 12. April 2010 gab die Band die Trennung nach 17 Jahren bekannt. Danny Goffey wurde im selben Jahr der neue Drummer der Band Babyshambles.

Am 6. September 2019 traten Supergrass in Originalbesetzung wieder zusammen auf.[2] 2020 begann eine Tournee durch Europa und die Vereinigten Staaten.[3] Am 3. September 2022 spielten Supergrass auf dem Tributkonzert für Taylor Hawkins im Wembley Stadium. Im Anschluss löste sich die Band wieder auf.[4]
