Flow State is the debut studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Tash Sultana, released on 31 August 2018, through their[4] own record label, Lonely Lands Records (distributed by Sony Music Australia in Australia, and Mom + Pop elsewhere).[5]

Sultana spent parts of 2017 and 2018 writing and recording the album, and was seen working with Matt Corby and Anderson .Paak throughout their album sessions.[6] Melbourne audio engineer Nikita Miltiadou was pictured in recording session images, and was a previous engineer on Sultana's prior EP and singles.

At the ARIA Music Awards of 2018, Flow State won the ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album.[7]

At the J Awards of 2018, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year.[8]

Background and recording

Following the release of their extended play Notion in 2016, Sultana toured worldwide. In between tour dates, Sultana spent time in the studio to work on what was described to be their first album. In June 2017, in an interview with Fairfax, Sultana described their plans to release an album in April 2018.

While the timing was pushed back, due to several health issues, and touring delays, Sultana gradually released sneak peeks of the album recording process via their social media channels. Those snapshots featured footage and imagery of them in the studio. In 2017, Sultana released the two singles. "Murder to the Mind" and "Mystik". On 21 June 2018, Sultana premiered the song "Salvation" live on triple j Breakfast with Ben and Liam, and announced the forthcoming release of their first studio album, Flow State.[9][10] They have subsequently released two further singles, "Harvest Love" and "Free Mind". In a Gold Coast Bulletin interview in August 2018, Sultana commented (regarding alcohol and other drugs in music) "you (I) hear all of the stories again and again and again (sic) from other musicians about alcohol and drugs and while it's fun to do for a bit, I don't know that is fun enough to try to sustain a life".

Artwork and title

In an April 2018 interview with online Spanish blog Indierocks, Sultana spoke about the influence behind the name Flow State and said "it's the term to refer to when you access a part of your mind known as your being, and you find something you are passionate about."[11]

In Sultana's social media, they make reference to Ben Lopez, and Pat Fox as being responsible for the creation of the art for the single "Salvation”, with Fox being responsible for the album art creation.[12]

At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 76, based on 4 reviews, an indication of "generally favorable reviews".[13] Ryan Bray of Consequence of Sound gave the album a B+, commenting "This is great pop music with an edge, a record full of good vibes and bad attitude, that somehow manages to work everything out splendidly."[16] Maura Johnston of Rolling Stone awarded the album four of five stars, stating that "After years of being a festival and YouTube sensation, Sultana's thrown down the gauntlet forcefully."[19] For Beat Magazine, Nathan Gunn rated the album 9/10 and commented "This record (Flow State) represents a quantum leap -- a major milestone in Sultana's seemingly short career. But don't underestimate her. This is just the beginning."[15] Of Flow State, AllMusic's Mark Deming wrote "Sultana could stand to edit herself a bit better, but Flow State is unquestionably the work of a first-rate talent with potential, and if anyone is going to teach young women about the innate coolness of the guitar, she seems like just the person to do it.", giving the album 3.5 of 5 stars, or 70%.[14] Mikey Cahill of the Herald Sun rated the album four of five stars, commenting "I thought she’d boxed herself in on the eager Jungle EP. Here she shows us she can go toe-to-toe with Hendrix, Erykah Badu, India. Arie and plenty more. She punches. She reigns."[18]

In a more critical review, Rachel Aroesti of The Guardian awarded Flow State 3 of 5 stars, commenting "Lacking any particularly memorable melodies, it is expansive and mellow, recalling 90s singer-songwriter fare with added R&B flavours, spacey instrumentation and psychedelic guitar wigouts.".[17]

Release and promotion

On 21 June 2018, Sultana announced Flow State was available for pre-order, and was confirmed to be released on 31 August 2018.

The album was announced to be released through Sultana's own record label Lonely Lands Records, an imprint of Sony Music Australia, and through Mom+Pop Music in the US.

Singles

In 2017, Sultana released "Murder to the Mind" and "Mystik", which have both been certified gold in Australia in 2018.[20] In June 2018, Sultana released the album's official lead single, "Salvation". On 13 July 2018, Sultana released the single "Harvest Love", followed by "Free Mind" on 17 August 2018.

Music videos

On 13 July, Sultana released a 'live lounge' recording of "Harvest Love". As of August 2018, the "Harvest Love" live lounge recording has over 300,000 views on YouTube.[21]

Sultana released a lyric video for "Free Mind" on 17 August 2018. On 12 September 2018, Sultana released the official music video for "Free Mind" featuring footage from Sultana's tour and travelling, filmed and edited by Dara Munnis, and directed by Munnis and Sultana.[22][23]

Tash Sultana (* 15. Juni 1995 als Natasha Sultana in Melbourne, Victoria, Australien) ist ein australisch-maltesischer Künstler und tätig in den Bereichen des Singer-Songwritings, des Multiinstrumentalischen, des Beatboxing und der Looping-Kunst.[1] Größere Bekanntheit erlangte Sultana im April 2016, als das Video des eigenen Songs Jungle[2] innerhalb weniger Tage mehr als eine Million Aufrufe erzielte.[3] Positive Resonanz erhielten weitere als Live Bedroom Recordings im eigenen YouTube-Kanal veröffentlichte Jam-Session-Videos.[4] Tash Sultanas Musikstil bildet eine Mischung aus Electronic Indie, Folk, Jazz, Reggae, Rock und Soul.[5][6]

Leben

Kindheit und Jugend

Tash Sultana wuchs in Melbourne auf.[7] Im Alter von drei Jahren bekam Sultana vom Großvater eine erste Gitarre geschenkt und begann eine Leidenschaft für Musik zu entwickeln.[7]

Im Alter von 17 Jahren erlitt Sultana nach dem Konsum psilocybinhaltiger Pilze eine drogeninduzierte Psychose, gefolgt von neun Monaten Therapie.[8] In dieser Zeit brachte Sultana sich auch das Loopen bei.[8][4] Bereits während der Schulzeit sowie weiterhin nach dem Abschluss der High School begann Sultana, um sich nach Aufforderung seitens der Mutter ein eigenes Taschengeld zu verdienen, mit Straßenauftritten und professionalisierte dies nach und nach.[8][9]

Beginn der Musikkarriere

Durch Straßenauftritte sowie zuhause aufgenommenen und in sozialen Medien veröffentlichten Livesessions und zahlreichen kleineren Auftritten in Clubs und Bars bildete sich seit 2013 eine immer größere Fanbase um Sultana.[9] Im Juni 2016 wurde Sultana schließlich von Lemon Tree Music, einer Melbourner Managementagentur für aufstrebende lokale Musiker, unter Vertrag genommen.[10] Die Agentur organisierte dann Sultanas erste Welttournee mit Konzerten in Australien, Neuseeland, Deutschland, Großbritannien und den Niederlanden.[10]

2016/2017: Notion EP, Notion World Tour und Homecoming Tour

Am 23. September 2016 gab Sultana über das eigene Plattenlabel Lonely Lands Records die erste EP mit dem Titel Notion heraus.[11] Damit gewann Sultana im November 2016 den Preis 2016 Unearthed Artist J Award des australischen Radiosenders Triple J.[12] Die Singles Jungle und Notion landeten beide in den Triple J Hottest 100, 2016.[1] Anfang 2017 wurde die EP mithilfe des neuen zusätzlichen Partners (Plattenlabel Mom + Pop Music) als Multi-Format veröffentlicht.[13]

Sultanas Lied Jungle wurde zudem 2017 in den Soundtrack der Fußballsimulation FIFA 18 aufgenommen.[14]

Im Februar 2017 absolvierte Sultana eine ausverkaufte US-Tour.[15] Am 21. April gab Sultana die Single Murder to the Mind heraus.[16] Kurz darauf war Sultana wegen einer Kehlkopfentzündung gezwungen, zwei Konzerte der Festivalreihe Groovin The Moo 2017 abzusagen.[17] In den darauffolgenden Monaten trat Sultana auf zahlreichen Festivals auf und absolvierte ausverkaufte Soloauftritte in Australien, Neuseeland und ganz Europa.[18] Im Juli 2017 gab Sultana bekannt, nach dem Ende der Welttournee im November und Dezember Stadien- und Arenenkonzerte in Australien als Homecoming Tour zu spielen.[19]

2018/2019: Erstes Studioalbum Flow State

Sultanas Debütalbum Flow State wurde am 31. August 2018 veröffentlicht. Bereits im Vorfeld waren die Singles Salvation, Harvest Love und Free Mind veröffentlicht worden, die zusammen mit den im Jahr 2017 herausgegebenen Singles Murder to the Mind und Mystik Bestandteil des Albums sind.[20] Ein Großteil der Songs, unter anderem Harvest Love, Big Smoke und Blackbird, war bereits seit 2015 auf Youtube aus der Live Bedroom Recording-Reihe als Jam-Versionen verfügbar und wurden mit Flow State von Tash neu interpretiert sowie erstmals in Studioqualität aufgenommen.[21]

Im Februar 2019 spielte Sultana, nun unter dem Namen Tash Sultana, die bisher größten Konzerte im Rahmen der eigenen Flow State Tour innerhalb Australiens. Es folgten die zweite Flow State UK/Europe Tour im Sommer 2019, nachdem Sultana bereits im September 2018 innerhalb Europa getourt war, sowie die Flow State North America Tour im Herbst 2019.

Des Weiteren veröffentlichte Sultana am 4. April 2019 die Single Can't Buy Happiness sowie am 10. Juli die erste Kollaboration Talk It Out mit dem australischen Sänger Matt Corby. Tash Sultana wirkte zudem an der Single Daydreaming der deutschen Band Milky Chance mit, die als Outtake zu deren Album Mind the moon herauskam.[22]

2020/2021: Terra Firma

Am 19. Februar 2021 gab Tash Sultana das zweite Studioalbum Terra Firma heraus. Das Album entstand größtenteils in ihrem Home-Studio während der COVID-19-Pandemie und stellt eine Interpretation des Anbruchs einer neuen Zeit dar, einerseits für Sultana persönlich-künstlerisch aber auch weltweit aufgrund der die bisherige Normalität in Frage stellenden Pandemie. Der Titel Terra Firma steht symbolisch für die Erdkruste, als Gründung des eigenen Seins und Verbindungspunkt zu den fünf Elementen, auf die Tash in der Struktur des Albums Bezug nimmt:[23]

„Das Album ist unterteilt in die fünf Elemente und wir werden fünf Singles vorab veröffentlichen. Jede davon repräsentiert ein Element. Pretty Lady ist Wasser, Greed ist Erde, Beyond The Pine ist ‚Air‘ und die gestern erschienene Willow Tree ist Feuer. Die nächste, deren Name ich noch nicht verraten darf (Sweet And Dandy; A.d.R.), ist ‚Spirit‘.“

Der australische Singer-Songwriter Josh Cashman, mit dem Tash im Jahr 2015 schon den Song More than I should als Youtube-Video produziert hat, sowie der australische RnB-Künstler Jerome Farah, den Tash aus der Schulzeit kennt, wirkten kollaborativ bei zwei Songs des Albums mit.[23] Das Intro-Musikstück Musk stammt wie bereits einzelne Songs des Albums Flow State aus der Live Bedroom Recording-Reihe und stellt den letzten bisher noch nicht in Studioqualität veröffentlichten Song der Reihe dar. Das Musikvideo der schon im April 2020 veröffentlichten Single Pretty Lady, die aufgrund eines Amateurvideos aus Tash' Busking-Zeiten als Variation bereits auf der Plattform Youtube Bekanntheit erlangt hatte, wurde aus den Tanzvideos zahlreicher Fans, die im Rahmen der von Tash via Social Media initiierten weltweiten Kampagne unter dem Hashtag #prettyladychallenge zur ersten globalen Hochzeit der COVID-19-Pandemie entstanden, erstellt.[24]

Musikstil und Rezeption

Tash Sultana spielt neben dem Paradeinstrument, der Gitarre, noch zehn weitere Instrumente, darunter Bass, verschiedene Flöten, Klavier, Mandoline, Mundharmonika, Saxophon, Trompete sowie einige Perkussionsinstrumente.[6][8] Inspiration schöpft Sultana – eigenen Angaben nach – aus der Musik von Jimi Hendrix, Erykah Badu, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, alt-J und Phil Collins.[25][26]

Als „One-Person-Band“ multitaskend mehrere Instrumente bedienend sowie dank außergewöhnlicher Bühnenpräsenz bleibt auch bei größeren Konzerten der Jamcharakter der Auftritte erhalten.[4][27][18]

Persönliches

Tash Sultana ist Botschafter der australischen Non-Profit-Organisation beyondblue. Ziel der Organisation ist das Herstellen von Sensibilität für psychische Erkrankungen wie Depressionen oder Angststörungen sowie die Unterstützung von Betroffenen.[28]

Sultana lebt mit einer festen Partnerin in Melbourne.[29] 2018 erklärt Sultana die eigene Geschlechtsidentität als nichtbinär (englisch nonbinary).[30]
