Time & Space is the second studio album and major label debut by the American punk rock band Turnstile. It was released on February 23, 2018, through Roadrunner – the band's debut on the label.

Upon its release, the album was met with critical acclaim by contemporary music critics,[2] and debuted at number one on the US Billboard Heatseekers chart and number fifteen on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, selling 2,800 copies in its first week.[3]

Background

After the release of their debut album in 2015 the band signed to Roadrunner Records to record and release their second album. Speaking to Noisey, lead vocalist Brendan Yates spoke on the bands decision to sign to a major label "It's been super cool. The coolest part about it, and the thing that makes me feel good about being in a band, is that the process was really natural. They expressed interest in putting out our last LP. I think we met them in 2014 but, at that point, it didn't feel natural." going on to say "Obviously, we've grown up on some Roadrunner records, and we've known what the label is based off records that have been inspiring to us, like Madball, Biohazard, and Life of Agony".[4]

Recording

The album was recorded in 2017/18 with producer Will Yip at his Studio 4 recording facility in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.[5] Speaking to SPIN in early 2018 Brendan Yates spoke about the bands vision for the album; "It's just the idea of disconnecting oneself from situations and letting go, separating yourself," going on to say "It's just a lot of reflection, in that sense: stepping back and looking at the position you're in, the relationships you're in…[it's about] getting outside of your mind—and out of your body—to see the clearing."[6]

Release

The album was released worldwide on February 23, 2018, through Roadrunner Records on CD, 12" vinyl and through online services. In the US the record peaked at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, number four on the US Vinyl Albums chart and fifteen on the Top Hard Rock Albums. In Europe the album charted on the UK Rock and Metal Albums chart at number twelve and number eight nine on the German Albums chart.

The album was met with critical acclaim upon release, holding an aggregated score of 81 on Metacritic based on 12 reviews.[8] Writing for The New York Times, Jon Caramanica gave out praise: "Time & Space" is its outstanding second album, just over 25 minutes long, and an urgent, clear and bruising statement of purpose", adding "this album also has moments of lightness, mild turns in complementary directions that add breathing room and complexity".[19] Will Richards, writing for DIY, gave the album 4 stars and proclaimed "Turnstile have made a name as one of the most exciting hardcore bands on the planet. Second offering 'Time & Space' hammers the point home, and is a huge hammer-blow". Concluding the article: "Sneaking under the half-hour mark, 'Time & Space' is a comprehensive thrash that places Turnstile as the most inventive, forward-thinking band in hardcore".[9]

Drowned in Sound judged the album a 7/10, with reviewer Adam Turner-Heffer calling the record "easily the most impressive sounding record of their relatively short careers so far, without taking the energy away from their raw power." he did however have a few criticisms ; "If there is a major criticism to be lobbed at Time & Space however, is that its one-noted nature will make it difficult for anyone outside of genre fans to want to reach out over and encourage a crossover appeal".[10]

Pitchfork offered up a mixed review, summarizing reviewer Sam Lefebvre wrote "The "experimentation" on the Baltimore band's latest album is hesitant and unfocused. It's a punishingly familiar collision of yesteryear's crossover rock with textbook hardcore bluster". The Guardian also gave it a mixed review, with Dave Simpson commenting on the short length of certain album tracks; "Former Lauryn Hill backing singer Tanikka Charraé turns up on Bomb's funky hip-hop interlude, but again it's over in seconds, and one wonders what they could have achieved by being even bolder."[12]

Kerrang! magazine praised the album highly on release, awarding it their full 5-K rating, and later named it the best album of 2018 in their year-end list.[20]

Turnstile (englisch Drehkreuz) ist eine US-amerikanische Hardcore-Band aus Baltimore, Maryland. Die Band wurde im Jahre 2010 gegründet und veröffentlichte bislang drei Studioalben und fünf EPs. Die Band wurde dreimal für einen Grammy nominiert.

Geschichte

Gründung und Nonstop Feeling (2010 bis 2017)

Die Band bestand ursprünglich aus dem Sänger Brendan Yates, den Gitarristen Brady „B-Rady“ Ebert und Sean „Coo“ Cullen, dem Bassisten Franz „Freaky Franz“ Lyons und dem Schlagzeuger Daniel „D-Fang“ Fang. Noch im Gründungsjahr veröffentlichten Turnstile ein Demo, welches ihnen im darauffolgenden Jahr einen Vertrag bei Reaper Records einbrachte. In den Jahren 2011 und 2013 veröffentlichte die Band die EPs Pressure to Succeed und Step 2 Rhythm, bevor am 13. Januar 2015 das von Brian McTernan produzierte Debütalbum Nonstop Feeling erschien. Turnstile gingen zunächst mit Superheaven auf Tournee, gefolgt von einer Europatournee im Vorprogramm von Sick of It All und Ignite.[1] Im Frühjahr 2015 tourten Turnstile im Vorprogramm von New Found Glory durch Nordamerika.

Nach dieser Tour verließ der Gitarrist Sean „Coo“ Cullen Turnstile und wurde durch Pat McCrory ersetzt, der zuvor bei Angel Du$t spielte.[2] Mit McCrory veröffentlichte die Band am 16. September 2016 die dritte EP Move Thru Me über Pop Wig Records. Kurioserweise wurden Turnstile bereits im Mai 2016 von Roadrunner Records unter Vertrag genommen.[3] Im Sommer 2016 spielten Turnstile auf den europäischen Festivals With Full Force, Graspop Metal Meeting, Hellfest und Vainstream Rockfest. Ein Jahr später traten sie unter anderem auf dem US-amerikanischen Festival Rock on the Range auf.

Time & Space (2018 bis 2019)

Zusammen mit dem Produzenten Will Yip nahm die Band ihr zweites Studioalbum Time & Space auf, welches am 23. Februar 2018 erschien. Das Album stieg auf Platz 89 der deutschen Albumcharts ein und belegte Platz eins der US-amerikanischen Heatseekers Charts, die nur Künstler berücksichtigen, die noch kein Album in den Top 100 der regulären Albumcharts vorweisen können. Insgesamt erreichte das Album alleine in den USA 36.000 Album-equivalente Einheiten.[4] Im Frühjahr 2018 tourte die Band mit Touché Amoré durch Nordamerika. Turnstile wurden bei den Kerrang! Awards 2018 in der Kategorie Best International Breakthrough nominiert. Der Preis ging jedoch an Code Orange.[5] Darüber hinaus kürte das Magazin Kerrang! Time & Space zu ihrem Album des Jahres 2018.[6]

Im Sommer 2018 spielten Turnstile auf den europäischen Festivals Copenhell, Hellfest sowie in den Vereinigten Staaten beim Louder Than Life und Rock on the Range. Bei den Heavy Music Awards 2019 wurden Turnstile in der Kategorie Best International Artist und Time & Space in der Kategorie Best Album nominiert.[7] Die Preise gingen jedoch an die Bands Parkway Drive bzw. Architects. Drei der Lieder des Albums Time & Space wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit dem australischen DJ Mall Grab überarbeitet und am 7. Januar 2020 als EP mit dem Titel Share a View veröffentlicht.

Glow On (seit 2021)

Anschließend begann die Band mit der Arbeit an ihrem dritten Studioalbum und entschieden sich für Mike Elizondo als Produzenten. Dieser wurde durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Rappern wie Eminem oder Dr. Dre bekannt. Als Gastsänger sind der britische Sänger Blood Orange und die US-amerikanischen Singer-Songwriterin Julien Baker zu hören. Zunächst erschien am 27. Juni 2021 die EP Turnstile Love Connection und dann am 27. August 2021 das dritte Studioalbum Glow On, welches Platz neun der deutschen, Platz 30 der US-amerikanischen, Platz 46 der Schweizer, Platz 62 der britischen und Platz 75 der österreichischen Albumcharts erreichte. Das deutsche Magazin Visions kürte Glow On zunächst zum Album des Monats[8] und später zum Album des Jahres.[9] Das US-amerikanische Onlinemagazin Revolver wählte Glow On zum besten Hardcore-Alben des Jahres,[10] während das deutsche Onlinemagazin laut.de Glow On zum Metal-Album des Jahres 2021 kürte.[11] Am 15. Dezember 2021 traten Turnstile mit dem Liedern Mystery und T.L.C. in der NBC-Show Late Night with Seth Meyers auf.[12] Am 2. März 2022 folgte ein Auftritt mit dem Titel Mystery in der ABC-Show Jimmy Kimmel Live!.[13]

Bei den Heavy Music Awards 2022 wurden Turnstile in der Kategorie Best International Artist und Glow On in der Kategorie Best Album nominiert,[14] die Preise gingen jedoch an die Bands Architects bzw. Beartooth. Bei den Kerrang! Awards 2022 erhielten Turnstile eine Nominierung in der Kategorie Best Live Act.[15] Der Preis ging an die Twenty One Pilots. Turnstile tourten im Sommer 2022 mit Chubby and the Gang durch Europa und nahmen an der Reuniontournee von My Chemical Romance teil.[16] Im August 2022 verließ der Gitarrist Brady Ebert die Band. Schlagzeuger Daniel Fang hatte zunächst gerichtlich versucht, ein Kontaktverbot gegenüber Ebert zu erwirken. Dieses wurde jedoch vom Maryland District Court abgelehnt. Brady Ebert wurde bereits seit Jahresbeginn durch Greg Cerwonka von der Band Take Offence vertreten.[17] Im Herbst 2022 touren Turnstile mit JPEGMafia und Snail Mail durch Nordamerika. Turnstile erhielten bei den Grammy Awards 2023 drei Nominierungen. Das Lied Holiday wurde in der Kategorie Best Rock Performance nominiert, während das Lied Blackout Nominierungen in den Kategorien Best Rock Song und Best Metal Performance erhielt.[18]

Für den Sommer 2023 wurden Turnstile als Vorgruppe der Reuniontournee von Blink-182 durch Nordamerika bestätigt.[19]

Stil

Alternatives Bandlogo

James Christopher Monger vom Onlinemagazin Allmusic beschrieb Turnstile als „draufgängerischen, von der Jugend getriebenen Hardcore Punk mit Herz“. Ihre Mischung aus „klassischem US-amerikanischen Hardcore mit glühendem, mit Groove beladenen Metalcore wäre sowohl klanglich als auch ideologisch tadellos“. Jan Schwarzkamp vom deutschen Magazin Visions beschrieb Turnstile auf Time & Space als „Stil-Amalgam aus Spät-80er/Früh-90er-Ikonen wie Snapcase, Leeway, Uniform Choice, Quicksand, Into Another, Battery, Inside Out, Black Train Jack und den schelmischen Murphy’s Law“.[20]

Sein Kollege Gerrit Köppl schrieb zu Glow On, dass „Hardcore seit seiner Erfindung nicht mehr so modern und weitgedacht klang“.[8] Jan Jaedike vom deutschen Magazin Rock Hard bezeichnete Turnstile als Band, die „sich jeglicher stilistischer Einsortierung entzieht“. Er verglich ihre Musik mit entstaubten Pop-Punk oder radiofreundliche Refused.[21] Laut Thomas Strater vom deutschen Magazin Metal Hammer klingen Turnstile „frisch, modern und bewegen sich fernab jeglicher Hardcore-Klischees“.[22]
