The C.D. Version of the First Two Records (released on cassette as The Tape Version of the First Two Records) is a compilation by punk rock band Bikini Kill, collecting their 1992 eponymous EP and their half of the 1993 EP Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, an album they shared with the band Huggy Bear.[1] It was released in 1994 on Kill Rock Stars and was the first Bikini Kill release on CD. The album was re-released by Bikini Kill Records on June 23, 2015 as simply The First Two Records and featured additional tracks from the expanded re-release of Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah.[2]

In its review, AllMusic suggests that the album and its "even noisier follow-up, Pussy Whipped, might be all the Bikini Kill one needs".[3] Characterizing the compilation as "[a]ggressive, lippy, and none-too-disciplined", Rough Guides reviewer Owen James noted that it "nonetheless managed to sound like a triumph of female bonding against the odds".[1] Rolling Stone described it as "caustic, daring, and shamelessly didactic, a two-by-four to the chops of patriarchy".[4]

Bikini Kill ist eine US-amerikanische Punkband, die die Riot-Grrrl-Bewegung der 1990er-Jahre stark prägte. Sie wurde im Oktober 1990 in Olympia gegründet. Die Band wurde für ihre feministischen Texte und ihre intensiven Liveauftritte bekannt.

Geschichte

Auch wenn sie gelegentlich mit bekannten Künstlern wie Nirvana (Schlagzeugerin Tobi Vail war eine Zeit lang mit Kurt Cobain liiert) und Joan Jett auf künstlerischer und politischer Ebene zusammenarbeiteten, lehnten Bikini Kill Major-Label und die Mainstream-Musikpresse ab. Nach zwei Alben und mehreren EPs löste sich die Gruppe 1997 auf. Das bekannteste Nachfolgeprojekt von Bikini Kill wurde Le Tigre, bei dem Kathleen Hanna aktiv war. Im Mai 1998 erschien mit The Singles noch ein Kompilationsalbum vom Label Kill Rock Stars, welches die drei veröffentlichten Singles inklusive der jeweiligen B-Seiten zusammenstellt. Die russische Gruppe Pussy Riot nennt Bikini Kill als Vorbild.

2019 fand die Band für einige Auftritte zusammen (so auf dem Riot Fest in Chicago).[1] 2020 wurde eine kleine Nordamerikatournee durchgeführt,[2] und im August desselben Jahres trat die Band auf dem norwegischen Øyafestivalen auf.[3] Eine für 2021 angesetzte Tournee durch Europa und die Vereinigten Staaten wurde auf 2022 verschoben.[4] Bedingt durch eine COVID-19-Infektion wurde ein Teil der 2022er-Termine auf 2023 verschoben,[5] die Europa-Auftritte auf 2024.[6]
