Horse Bites Dog Cries is the second studio album by the American punk rock band D.I. It was originally released in 1986, on the label Reject. The album was recorded at Casbah Studios in Fullerton, California in 1985 with Chaz Ramirez (of Social Distortion fame). Due to a typo on the album itself, many fans believe that it was released in 1985, but this appears to be false because its release was delayed until 1986 to avoid confusion with the band's then-current album Ancient Artifacts. Horse Bites Dog Cries was the final album featuring the Agnew brothers (Rikk and Alfie) and drummer John Knight (until his return on 1994's State of Shock).

Although Horse Bites Dog Cries was not a commercial success, it has gained a cult following in recent times, and has been regarded by some music critics as D.I.'s best album. "Hang Ten in East Berlin" and "Spiritual Law" were originally recorded on Ancient Artifacts. "Johnny's Got a Problem" was re-recorded on their third album What Good Is Grief to a God? and would later be covered by the Kottonmouth Kings on their 2004 album Fire It Up, in which frontman Casey Royer makes a guest appearance in the cover song.

D.I. ist eine 1981 gegründete Punkband aus dem kalifornischen Orange County.

Geschichte

D.I. wurde 1981 von Casey Royer gegründet, während sich seine Hauptband Adolescents, bei der er als Schlagzeuger fungierte, vorübergehend aufgelöst hatte. Die Abkürzung „D.I.“ steht für „Drug Ideology“. Die erste EP enthielt noch Material, das Royer ursprünglich für die Adolescents geschrieben hatte.[1] In den Folgejahren wurde die Band D.I. häufig temporär ad acta gelegt, jedoch mit Royer als einzigem konstanten Mitglied immer wieder reaktiviert. Die Band ist personell eng mit den Adolescents und Social Distortion verknüpft.[2]

1983 hatten D.I. einen Auftritt im Film Suburbia der Regisseurin Penelope Spheeris, was der Band einige Popularität verschaffte. 1996 coverte die Thrash-Metal-Band Slayer das D.I.-Stück Richard Hung Himself für ihr Album Undisputed Attitude. 2008 wurde bei Gitarrist Craig Jewett Kehlkopfkrebs diagnostiziert; in der Folge gab es ein Benefizkonzert mit u. a. TSOL und Agent Orange.[3] Im März 2011 wurde Sänger Royer verhaftet und im April zu 90 Tagen Haft verurteilt, weil er in Gegenwart seines zwölfjährigen Sohnes Heroin konsumiert hatte.[4]

Stil

Steven Blush sieht die Band stilistisch und personell eng verzahnt mit der Punk- und Hardcore-Szene des Orange County, zu der zu Beginn der 1980er-Jahre u. a. Social Distortion, die Adolescents, Agent Orange und TSOL gehörten.[1] Das Musiknachrichtenmagazin Blabbermouth bezeichnet die Band als „Punk-Pioniere“ und ihre Musik als „hard-hitting, controversial punk rock“.[3] Die hawaiianische Zeitung Star Advertiser definiert die Musik der Band als „die-hard, old-school punk, O(range) C(ounty) style“.[5]
