David "Dudu" Tassa (Hebrew: דודו טסה; born February 10, 1977) is an Israeli rock musician,[1] singer, songwriter and record producer of Mizrahi Jewish descent. Besides having had a successful solo career in Israel, Tassa has been the leader of Dudu Tassa & the Kuwaitis which plays new renditions of old Iraqi and Kuwaiti songs written and composed by Tassa's late grandfather and great-uncle, Daoud and Salih Al-Kuwaity, since 2011.[2][3]

Life and musical career

Tassa was born and raised in Hatikva Quarter in Tel Aviv, Israel, to a Mizrahi Jewish family from Yemen, Iraq and Kuwait.[2][4] He was active in the local community center during his childhood. He studied in the theater program at Ironi Alef High School, and at the age of 15 he released his debut album, "Ohev et Ha'Shirim" (Hebrew: אוהב את השירים, "Loving the Songs"), produced by Yishai Ben Tzur. In 2000, after finishing his military service, Tassa released the album Yoter Barur (יותר ברור, "Clearer"), which was critically acclaimed despite slim sales. in 2002 he joined the band of Israeli satirist Eli Yatzpan’s late night show as lead guitarist.

In 2003 he released his third album, Mitokh Behira (מתוך בחירה, "By Choice"), gaining larger exposure than its antecedents. The album also included Tassa's version of "Fog el Nakhal", a famous Iraqi folk song that was also performed by his grandfather Daoud Al-Kuwaity. Tassa recorded the song for the film Turn Left at the End of the World, released a year following the album's release. In 2004 Tassa's released his fourth album, Bediyuk Bazman (בדיוק בזמן, "Just in Time"), was released, and in 2006 his fifth album, Lola (לולה).

In 2009 Tassa's sixth album, Basof Mitraglim Le’Hakol (בסוף מתרגלים להכל, "At the End You Get Used to Everything") was released. The album featured Radiohead’s lead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood. In the same year Tassa participated in Samuel Maoz’s film Lebanon, playing the role of a Syrian prisoner of war. He later participated in other Israeli films. In 2010 Tassa released a live album named Akharei Layla Shel Ra’ash (אחרי לילה של רעש, "After a Noisy Night"), recorded in his 2009 live concert in Zappa club, in Tel Aviv.

In 2012 Tassa released the album Skharkhoret (סחרחורת, "dizziness"),[5] and participated in Benny Torati's film "Balada La’Aviv Haboche" (בלדה לאביב הבוכה [he], Ballad Of The Weeping Spring).[6] Two years later, in 2014, he released the album Ir u’Vehalot (עיר ובהלות, "City and Panic.") for which Tassa was awarded the ACUM (Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers in Israel) prize as composer of the year.

In 2016, Tassa released the album Hagoleh (הגולֶה, "The Exile") most of the lyrics in which he wrote with he wrote in collaboration with Gilad Kahana. In 2017 a second live album was released under the name Dudu Tassa Be'Hofaa (דודו טסה בהופעה, "Dudu Tassa Live"), a double album recorded a year earlier in Hangar 11, a famous concert venue in Tel Aviv. In 2018 Tassa collaborated with Israeli poet Eli Eliahu in the production of the album Igeret el Ha'Yeladim (איגרת אל הילדים, "Letter for the Children") which included eight compositions by Tassa to Eliahu's original poems. Tassa worked with Jonny Greenwood on the collaborative album Jarak Qaribak which was released on June 9, 2023.[7]

Dudu Tassa & the Kuwaitis

In 2011, Tassa released the album Dudu Tassa & the Kuwaitis giving the name to Tassa's new band. The album was based entirely on Iraqi classics from the first half of the 20th century, composed by Tassa's grandfather and great-uncle, Daoud and Salih Al-Kuwaity.[8] Tassa began working on the album about a decade before his release, when he was asked to record the Iraqi classical folk song "Fog el Nakhal" for the soundtrack of "Turn Left at the End of the World". Following this initial experience, Tassa began collecting songs composed by the Al-Kuwaity Brothers and arranging them for an album combining their music with modern music. The album included original recordings of the Al-Kuwaity Brothers and their Iraqi orchestra.

The album was very successful, selling thousands of copies in Israel. Tassa was awarded the prestigious ACUM Prize for the production of the album. The album featured Berry Sakharof, Yehudit Ravitz and Carmela Tassa, Dudu's mother and the daughter of Daoud Al-Kuwaity, who contributed her voice in some Arabic language songs. The single "Wen Ya Galub" from this album was the first song in Arabic to be play-listed on Israel's leading radio stations.

The recording of the first album was documented in the film "Iraq n' Roll" (2011) that tells the story of collecting and reviving the music of the Al-Kuwaity Brothers.[9] The film was screened in many international festivals and won critical praise.

In 2015, Tassa's band's second album, "Ala Shawati",[10] was released, featuring Ninet Tayeb in the single "Dhub Utfatar".

Dudu Tassa & the Kuwaitis toured in the US.[11] and Europe and participated in many rock festivals, such as Coachella Festival[12] and SXSW showcase in Austin, TX,[13] the Sziget Festival in Hungary, and WOMEX.[14] In 2017 the band were chosen by Radiohead as its supporting act for its 2017 USA tour and its concert in Israel.[15]

In October 2018 the band's new album "El Hajar" ("abandonment" in Arabic) was released.

Personal life

Tassa is of Kuwaiti Jewish ancestry from his paternal and maternal lineage. Tassa married Noa Kram on 30 September 2014. They have a daughter (born 2015) and a son (born 2017).

Jonathan „Jonny“ Richard Guy Greenwood (* 5. November 1971 in Oxford, England) ist ein britischer Musiker, Filmkomponist und Mitglied der Alternative-Rock-Band Radiohead.[1]

Zur Person

Jonny Greenwood ist einer der beiden Gitarristen von Radiohead. Daneben spielt er mehrere andere Instrumente. Im Zusammenspiel mit Sänger Thom Yorke, der in erster Linie federführend für Melodien und Texte wirkt, zeichnet er für die vielschichten Arrangements verantwortlich und ist daher maßgeblich an der Bildung des Radiohead-Sounds beteiligt. Sein exzessiver Spielstil, reich an Effekten und einprägsamen Gitarrensoli, tritt auf Songs wie Paranoid Android (von OK Computer) deutlich hervor.[2] Eine Unterarmbandage, mit der er über mehrere Jahre auftrat, war die Folge seines zeitweise wilden Spielstils.

Live steht Greenwood stets am (vom Zuschauer aus gesehen) rechten Rand der Bühne, umgeben von einer Wand aus Effektgeräten, Synthesizern und diversen Instrumenten. Während sich die anderen Bandmitglieder meist auf ein bis zwei Instrumente beschränken, füllt Greenwood alle Lücken, die im Prozess auftauchen. Während der Aufnahmen zu Kid A beschäftigte er sich mit den Ondes Martenot, welche bis heute maßgeblich am Sound vieler Radiohead-Songs beteiligt sind.[3]

Der Soundtrack zu dem dokumentarischen Film Bodysong (2003; von Regisseur Simon Pummel) wird oft als Soloalbum Greenwoods angesehen. Er besteht vor allem aus elektronischen Klangexperimenten, die kaum Songstrukturen aufweisen. Ein weiterer Soundtrack von Greenwood für Paul Thomas Andersons Film There Will Be Blood, wurde 2007 veröffentlicht und auf der Berlinale 2008 mit einem Silbernen Bären ausgezeichnet.[4] Für alle folgenden Filme Andersons komponierte und arrangierte Greenwood die Filmmusik. Für die Musik in Andersons Film Der seidene Faden wurde er für den Oscar 2018 nominiert.

2021 war er mit Thom Yorke und dem Sons-of-Kemet-Schlagzeuger Tom Skinner Gründungsmitglied von The Smile; ihren ersten gemeinsamen Liveauftritt hatten sie im Mai 2021 beim Glastonbury Festival.[5] Ihr Album A Light for Attracting Attention mit 13 Songs erschien 2022.[6]

Der Rolling Stone listete Greenwood 2015 auf Rang 48 der 100 größten Gitarristen aller Zeiten. In einer Liste aus dem Jahr 2003 hatte er Rang 60 belegt.[7][8]

Equipment

Jonny Greenwood spielt seit mindestens 1993 eine Fender Telecaster Plus, welcher er mit dem Radiohead-Techniker Plank einen Cut-Off-Schalter hinzugefügt hat, welcher ihm die Möglichkeit gibt, das Signal zu unterbrechen, wodurch ein „Stottereffekt“ entstehen kann, wie man ihn in dem Solo von Paranoid Android hören kann. Greenwood benutzt außerdem eine Fender Starcaster sowie eine Gibson Les Paul.[9]

Des Weiteren benutzt er eine Reihe von Effekten, die den Radiohead-Sound prägen:[10]

Was den Einsatz seiner Verstärker anbelangt, greift Jonny Greenwood seit Jahren auf eine Kombination aus dem Vox AC 30 und dem Fender Eighty-Five zurück. Hierbei werden alle seine unverzerrten Signale über den Vox AC 30 und seine verzerrten Signale über den Fender Eighty-Five gespielt. Mit einem FLine-Selector kann Greenwood zwischen den beiden Verstärkern während des Spielens wählen.

Einflüsse

Greenwood nannte auch John McGeoch (Gitarrist der Band Magazine),[12] Art Blakey,[13] Olivier Messiaen,[13] Can,[13] Talking Heads,[13] Krzysztof Penderecki[14] und György Ligeti[14] als persönliche Einflüsse.

Auszeichnungen

Seit 2008 gewann Jonny Greenwood 29 Filmpreise und wurde für 39 weitere nominiert.

1998 erhielt der Dokumentarfilm über Radiohead Meeting People Is Easy Nominierungen für zwei Grammy Awards, darunter als Best Long Form Music Video. 2007 ist er als Composer of the Year und 2014 für den Best Original Score in einem Action/Adventure/Thriller Film für Inherent Vice nominiert worden.[15]

Zum ersten Mal für seine Filmmusik wurde Greenwood 2008 durch die International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) als Breakthrough Film Composer of the Year ausgezeichnet. Von 2013 bis 2014 war Greenwood Associated composer des BBC Concert Orchestra.

Für die Filmmusik in Paul Thomas Andersons Film There Will Be Blood wurde er mit dem Ivor Novello Award ausgezeichnet.[16]

2017 gewann er für die Filmmusik von Der seidene Faden den International Film Music Critics Award als Film Score of the Year und Best Original Score for a Drama Film. Für Der seidene Faden erhielt er außer zahlreichen Nominierungen und Auszeichnungen auch jeweils eine Nominierungen für den Oscar, den BAFTA und den Golden Globe. Für den Soundtrack zu The Power of the Dog erhielt Greenwood im Rahmen der Grammy Awards 2023 ebenfalls eine Nominierung.
