Smoke + Mirrors is the second studio album by American pop rock band Imagine Dragons. The album was recorded during 2014 at the band's home studio in Las Vegas, Nevada. Self-produced by members of the band along with English hip-hop producer Alex da Kid, the album was released by Interscope Records and Grant's Kidinakorner label on February 17, 2015, in the United States.[4]

The album received generally mixed reviews from music critics upon release.[5] However, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, moving more than 172,000 units (becoming their only album to date to debut at number one),[6] and also debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and the Canadian Albums Chart.[7] It has since been certified gold in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, and Brazil. Three official singles have been released from the standard version of the album: "I Bet My Life", "Gold" and "Shots". As of July 2017 the album has sold over 1,000,000 copies in the US.[8]

Background

The band embarked on the Night Visions Tour in 2013. The band's experiences on the tour served as an inspiration for their second album.

In 2012, Imagine Dragons released their debut studio album Night Visions. The album, produced by the band along with Alexander Grant and Brandon Darner, launched the band into international mainstream commercial success, charting within the top ten of 14 national record charts, in addition to charting on eight others. Certified Platinum by seven national music associations, including 2× Platinum in the United States by the RIAA[9] and 3× Platinum in Canada by Music Canada,[10] the album was initially met with first week sales in excess of 83,000 copies, the highest charting for a debut rock album since 2006.[11] The album was also nominated for the 2014 Juno Award for International Album of the Year.[12]

The band released six singles during the Night Visions album cycle in 2012 and 2013, five of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. "Radioactive," a 2013 single, sold more than nine million singles in the United States, spending more than 1 year consecutively on the Billboard Hot 100. Peaking at no. 3 on the chart, it also broke the record for the longest run into the top five and is the best-selling rock single on the Nielsen SoundScan running list of best-selling rock tracks in digital history.[13] Billboard listed the band as one of "2012's Brightest New Stars"[14] and later "The Breakout Band of 2013."[15]

To further promote the already-successful Night Visions, the band set out on a year-long concert tour beginning in early 2013 and ending in mid-2014, dubbed the "Night Visions Tour." The tour spanned for over 170 dates, and visited North America, South America, Europe and Oceania. An additional tour of North America, dubbed the "Into the Night Tour," was also executed. The conclusion of the Into the Night Tour signaled the end of the Night Visions album cycle, with Night Visions Live, a live album, serving as the last release in the cycle. Lead singer Dan Reynolds joked about the end of the Night Visions cycle, saying that "We're always writing on the road, [so] that second album will come, unless we die at the age of 27 next year. Hopefully we don't die and there will be a second album. I don't know when it will be, but it may come."[16] The band were also inspired greatly by their experiences on the Night Visions Tour. Dan Reynolds told New Orleans-based newspaper The Times-Picayune that the world tour had "a lot of inspiration to be drawn," and further stating, "You kind of realize that you’re a lot smaller than you think."[17]

The idea behind the second studio album, dubbed as their "new year's resolution,"[18] was to create music and finish it when the band feels that their work is done. Reynolds told MTV in 2014 that the band wanted to "put out an album that [they're] really happy with". He further said that "we tend to be perfectionists, too hard on ourselves at times, and we don't want to rush anything because we know how we are with things. We don't want to put a record out until we really feel good about it, you know, and who knows how long that will take."[19]

Composition

Reynolds stated to music magazine Rolling Stone that the next album will be "different" from Night Visions, and that the band intends the album to be "stripped back quite a bit." He added that "we embraced a lot of hip-hop influences with Night Visions, but I think the next record will be more rock-driven. It’s too early to say, but there is some weird stuff going on in these songs."[20]

Recording

The creative process for the album began long before the conclusion of the Night Visions cycle. Since the beginning of the Night Visions Tour in 2012, the band had been writing new material for an upcoming album, and, even as early as the start of the tour, had been recording demos for the album, before entering the studio.[21] By the time that they entered the studio to work on the album, they had amassed 50 demos to work from.[20] The demos had been described by Reynolds as "definitely different," but added that "it’s still Imagine Dragons, but we’ve got a lot of growth and maturing to do as a band. I think [the new material] is going to hopefully be a step in the right direction. We’re just trying to create and do what comes out and what feels right." The band also were self-critical throughout the sessions, with Drummer Daniel Platzman stating that there was "no room for external pressure" during the recording of the album.[22]

The band announced a rest at the end of the Night Visions Tour at Lollapalooza in Sao Paulo, Brazil.[23]

Promotion

The Smoke + Mirrors album cycle featured three singles and two promotional singles. Regional releases from the album feature different track listings. Target has made available an exclusive deluxe version of the album featuring four bonus tracks, available online internationally.[citation needed]

Target teamed with the band to air the first ever live commercial performance during the Grammy Awards. On February 8, 2015, the band performed "Shots" from Las Vegas' Freemont Street under the direction of Jonas Åkerlund.[24] Billboard estimated the commercial cost $8 million in airtime.[25]

Hard Rock Cafe teamed with the band, granting them the first ever full access to take control of Hard Rock Cafe's internal video system (more than 20,000 screens at all 151 locations worldwide) on February 17, 2014.[26] Also, autographed T-shirts will be hidden throughout the Hard Rock Cafe shops supporting the Tyler Robinson Foundation, benefiting the families of children with cancer.[26]

On December 12, 2014, Imagine Dragons posted on social media a request that fans look around Las Vegas Valley for hidden clues to upcoming songs. The band gave 13 fans puzzle pieces of the artwork for the album. When combined, the puzzle pieces revealed the cover art and album title. On December 15, 2014, "Gold" was released as a single with a video being released later. On the cover art for the album were a set of numbers that provided specific coordinates to prizes hidden in the Nevada desert, including an autographed guitar, drumsticks, Polaroid pictures, and a master pass for free concert tickets for the entire tour.[27][28]

On January 24, 2015, the band flew in 200 prize winning fans from around the world to attend a special listening event at the P3 Studio Art Gallery in the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.[29] The event included an art exhibition of Tim Cantor's work for the album and attendees were allowed to listen to the full album through Beats headphones.[29] Then the band arrived for an interview and private performance.[29]

February 20 through February 26, 2015, the band, partnering with Southwest Airlines, flew over 30 winners from all over the U.S. from coast to coast on what they called the "Destination Dragons" Tour. The Destination Dragons tour consisted of all the winners being flown from their hometowns, to small clubs in Los Angeles, Provo, Las Vegas, and Atlanta. This tour was a promotion for Smoke + Mirrors, and a chance for the band to road test their new music live, in preparation for their Smoke + Mirrors World Tour. They paid homage to the clubs they got their start in by playing small, private shows for the Destination Dragons winners, as well as local winners in each city. They played The Troubadour in Los Angeles, Velour in Provo, Utah, Vinyl in Las Vegas, and wrapped up the tour at Terminal West in Atlanta, Georgia. During the Southwest flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta, fans were treated to an acoustic concert in what the airline calls "Live at 35" where artists play for airplane passengers after the airplane reaches 35,000 feet. All winners flew to all 4 cities, were given tickets to all 4 private shows, were able to attend the "Live at 35" event, and were given a meet and greet.[citation needed]

The song "Friction" appeared in the NBA 2K17 soundtrack, the trailer for Mission: Impossible – Fallout and in the third and final season for Crossing Lines.[30]

Singles

"I Bet My Life" was released as the lead single from Smoke + Mirrors and debuted at number 15 on the Canadian Hot 100, number 27 on the UK Singles Chart, and 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.[31] It also topped the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs, a first for the band.[32] The band performed the song live on American Music Awards (2014),[33] Good Morning America (2015), The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2015),[34] VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live (2015).[35]

"Gold" was released as the second single from Smoke + Mirrors on December 16, 2014, and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart.[36]

"Shots" was released as the third and final single from Smoke + Mirrors and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as reaching No. 3 on the Norway Singles chart. The band performed the song live during the Grammy Awards (2015), a first ever live commercial performance, directed by Jonas Åkerlund.[24][25] They also performed the song live on Good Morning America (2015), The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2015),[37] The Howard Stern Show (2015), Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2015), and Today (2015).[38]

Promotional singles

"Smoke and Mirrors" and "I'm So Sorry" were released as promotional singles in 2015.

Tour

On February 5, 2015, the band played a live streaming concert for Live Nation and Yahoo! during which they announced the North American leg of the arena tour.[39][40] The band embarked on a world tour, Smoke + Mirrors Tour, in promotion of the worldwide release of Smoke + Mirrors. The tour began on began April 12, 2015 and concluded on February 5, 2016.

The album overall received mixed reviews from critics. Metacritic gave a score of 60/100 from 12 critics. Q published a positive review of the album, calling it "[a] modern pop-rock gem" and also noting it as an improvement upon their debut album Night Visions."[1] Entertainment Weekly published a positive review stating, "the group's sophomore effort scales back on the electronic frippery, revealing the tightly focused rock juggernaut they are on stage."[48] Illinois Entertainer published an interview with Reynolds on February 2, 2015, saying the album is "an ambitious, rock-solid effort, with potential hits galore."[49] The Daily Telegraph published a highly positive review of the album, calling it "thunderous" and saying its "songs are peppered with bright ideas and odd collisions, world music sounds percolating through R&B grooves, stuttering digital breaks interrupting solid rhythms. Lyrics and delivery suggest Imagine Dragons adhere to old-fashioned rock band idealism, but nothing is allowed to get in the way of a sparkling hook."[50]

Allison Stewart of The Washington Post wrote that the band "is very good at what it does, even if what it does isn't very good," having "effortlessly achieved" the album's one purpose, "to cram as many popular styles as possible into a mainstream rock album to appeal to as many people as it can."[51] Dave DiMartino of Yahoo! Music wrote that "it is the band’s music, and not their faces, or personalities, that resonates with the mass audiences. And this is good. . . This is a pretty solid, surprisingly diverse sounding rock album—not a tuneless screech-fest by any means—and a record the band should be proud of. . . This could have been a shambles, and it's anything but."[52] Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described the album as "overblown" arena rock, with more style than substance, and an overemphasis on reverberation effects such that "the reverb nearly functions as a fifth instrument in the band".[3]

The album's lyrics were nominated for an AML Award.[53]

Commercial performance

Smoke + Mirrors debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart with 195,000 album-equivalent units (172,000 of which were pure album sales).[54] It more than doubled the group's previous best sales week.[55] The album remained in the chart's top twenty for the next several weeks, as of July 2017, the album has sold over 1,000,000 copies in the United States.[8] In the United Kingdom, it became the final album to reach number one on sales alone as streaming became incorporated into the UK Albums Chart the following week.[56]

Imagine Dragons ist eine US-amerikanische Rockband[1] aus Las Vegas, Nevada. Sie wurde im Jahre 2008 gegründet und 2012 durch die Songs It’s Time und Radioactive bekannt.

Geschichte

2008 bis 2010: Gründung und musikalische Anfänge

Im Jahr 2008 traf Lead-Sänger Daniel Reynolds auf Schlagzeuger Andrew Tolman an der Brigham Young University, die sie beide besuchten. Nachdem sie begonnen hatten, gemeinsam Musik zu machen, holten sich Reynolds und Tolman Andrew Beck, Dave Lemke und Aurora Florence in die Band, um einen Gitarristen, Bassisten und Pianisten für die Gruppe zu gewinnen. Der Bandname bezieht sich auf eine Erklärung, die Reynolds jedem einzelnen Mitglied gab. Das Quintett veröffentlichte sich noch im selben Jahr wie ihr erster Titel Speak to Me. Beck und Florence stiegen später in diesem Jahr aus der Band aus.

Im Jahr 2009 trat Tolmans High-School-Freund Wayne Sermon, der am Berklee College of Music zu dem Zeitpunkt gerade einen Studiengang im Bereich des Gitarrespielens absolviert hatte, der Band bei. Lemke verließ die Band kurz darauf und Sermon nahm seine Position in der Band ein, woraufhin dieser den Musikstudenten Ben McKee als neuen Bassisten in die Gruppe holte.[2] In ihrer Heimatstadt Provo, bauten sie sich bereits eine kleine Band auf, bevor die Mitglieder nach Las Vegas, der Heimatstadt von Daniel Reynolds, zogen, wo die Band ihre ersten drei Songs aufnahm und veröffentlichte.[3]

2010 bis 2013: Durchbruch mit Night Visions

Mit dem Release ihrer EP Hell and Silence 2010 erhielt die Band einen Vertrag von Interscope Records, was die Popularität der Band steigern konnte. Daraufhin nahm sie mit dem Produzenten Alex da Kid in den Westlake Recording Studios die EP Continued Silence auf, die im Jahr 2012 erschien und erstmals Eindruck in den US-Charts hinterließ.

Mit dem Song It’s Time, der Anfang 2012 veröffentlicht wurde, konnten sie erstmals größere Aufmerksamkeit auch über ihre Heimat hinaus erlangen; so erreichten sie die offiziellen Single-Charts von über 20 Ländern und verkaufte sich über 2,5 Millionen Mal. Zudem wurde das Lied für einen MTV Music Award nominiert. Zwei Monate später erschien die zweite Single-Auskopplung ihres Debüt-Albums Radioactive, die ihren weltweiten Durchbruch verfestigen konnte. Das Lied erreichte in vielen Ländern die Top-5-Platzierungen und war in Schweden ein Nummer-eins-Hit. In dem populären Video zu Radioactive ist neben Alexandra Daddario auch der US-amerikanische Schauspieler Lou Diamond Phillips in einer markanten Gastrolle als Wettbaron zu sehen. Das Video auf YouTube hat bisher über 1,4 Milliarden Aufrufe.[4] Regie führte Syndrome.

Im Herbst 2012 folgte dann das Debütalbum der Gruppe namens Night Visions.[5] Dieses setzte sich aus Neuproduktionen sowie aus Titeln, die von früheren EPs stammen, zusammen. Es konnte den Erfolg bestätigen und erreichte in vielen Ländern die Top-10. Die Verkäufe stiegen bis auf über 7 Millionen, wofür die Imagine Dragons mit 20 Platin-Schallplatten ausgezeichnet wurden. In den schottischen Album-Charts erreichte es die Spitze, zudem entwickelte es sich in den USA zu dem am meisten gestreamten Album des Jahres 2013.

Nach Veröffentlichung ihres Studioalbums koppelte die Band die Lieder Demons und On Top of the World aus. Beide brachten weiteren weltweiten Erfolg ein. Demons stellt ein ruhigeres Lied dar, das dem Muster einer Ballade entspricht und erreichte in 11 Ländern Schallplattenstatus. Allein in den USA verkaufte sich die Single 5 Millionen Mal. On Top of the World konnte sich insbesondere im Airplay großer Beliebtheit erfreuen und war in etlichen Werbe- und Spielfilmen zu hören; so war er unter anderem Teil der Promoaktion für Coca-Cola und der NBA-2013/14-Übertragung, aber auch der Kinofilme Die Croods und Angry Birds – Der Film.

2013 gewannen die Imagine Dragons in der Kategorie „beste Alternative-Künstler“ den American Music Award (AMA). Radioactive wurde bei den Grammy Awards als beste Rock-Darbietung des Jahres ausgezeichnet. Am 19. September 2013 veröffentlichte die Band das Lied Monster im Zuge des Action-Rollen-Spiels Infinity Blade III, das auf der Deluxe-Version des zwei Jahre später erschienenen Albums Smoke + Mirrors erschien.

2014 bis 2016: Zweites Studioalbum Smoke + Mirrors

Am 2. Juni 2014 veröffentlichte Imagine Dragons mit Battle Cry das Titellied des Michael-Bay-Blockbusters Transformers: Ära des Untergangs, das auch im Soundtrack des Films melodisch thematisiert wird. Dadurch, dass sie den offiziellen Titeltrack produzierten, kamen nicht, wie in den vergangenen Teilen, Linkin Park zum Zug.

Passend zur Weltmeisterschaft des Computerspiels League of Legends veröffentlichte Imagine Dragons zusammen mit dem Entwickler des Spiels am 17. September 2014 den Song Warriors, der als Titelsong des Wettbewerbs diente und mit dem die Band selbst vor dem Finale in Seoul auftrat.[6][7] Weiterhin agiert der Song als offizielle Hymne der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft der Frauen 2015 und war im Soundtrack des Kinofilmes Die Bestimmung – Insurgent enthalten. Der Titel war wie auch Monster auf der Deluxe-Version ihres zweiten Studioalbums Smoke + Mirrors zu finden.

Im Oktober 2014 wurde das Lied I Bet My Life als Leadsingle ihres kommenden Albums veröffentlicht. Dieser thematisiert die Beziehung von Frontmann Dan Reynolds zu seinen Eltern. Sie premierten den Song beim American Music Awards, wo sie die Auszeichnung als „Favorite Alternative Artist“ erhielten. In allen relevanten Ländern rückte der Track in die offiziellen Single-Charts vor und wurde in den USA für eine Million Verkäufe mit einer Platin-Schallplatte ausgezeichnet.

Im Januar 2015 veröffentlichte die Band mit Shots die zweite Single aus dem Album. Diese präsentierten sie live bei der Grammy-Verleihung desselben Jahres. Der Titel erreichte in über 10 Ländern die offiziellen Single-Charts und entwickelte sich insbesondere in Norwegen zu einem kommerziellen Erfolg, wofür vor allem ein offizieller Remix des DJ-Duos Broiler verantwortlich war. Am 13. Februar 2015 erfolgte das Release ihres zweiten Studioalbums Smoke + Mirrors.[8] Dieses rückte an die Spitze der britischen und US-amerikanischen Album-Charts. In beiden Ländern sowie auch in Österreich wurde das Album mit einer goldenen Schallplatte ausgezeichnet.

Im August 2015 veröffentlichten die Imagine Dragons mit Dream die letzte Single aus dem Album. Das Release erfolgte jedoch nur in den USA in Form eines Remix’ von Future-Bass-Produzenten Jorgen Odegard. Später im Jahr 2015 veröffentlichten die Imagine Dragons die beiden Non-Album-Singles Roots und I Was Me, die kommerziell nicht mit ihren vorherigen Singles mithalten konnten. Letzteres Lied agiert als Charity-Single und hebt sich von ihrem eigentlichen Stil ab. So entspricht dieses einer weitaus ruhigeren und akustischeren Gestaltung.

Am 24. Juni 2016 wurde auf der Facebook-Seite von Imagine Dragons das Lied Sucker for Pain veröffentlicht, welches sie zusammen mit Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Ty Dolla $ign und X Ambassadors aufnahmen. Das Lied ist Teil des Soundtracks des Filmes Suicide Squad und bildet die zweite Top-10-Platzierung in den deutschen Single-Charts.

2017: Drittes Studioalbum Evolve

Am 27. September 2016 spielte Imagine Dragons mit einem Tweet erstmals auf ihr drittes Studioalbum an. Darin war Studio zu lesen. Die Band fuhr fort, indem sie kryptische Mitteilungen auf ihrem Twitter-Account posteten. Am 28. Januar 2017 begann die Band eine Reihe von Videos hochzuladen. Diese wiesen auf die Leadsingle des Albums hin. Die Zeitraffer-Videos zeigen Sänger Dan Reynolds, der surreale Bilder auf einem Grafiktablett zeichnet. Darin waren Morse-Codes versteckt, die sich etwa mit „Objekte gleicher Farbe“ übersetzen ließen.

Am 1. Februar 2017 wurde das Lied Believer veröffentlicht.[9] Das dazugehörige Video erschien einen Monat später am 7. März 2017.[10] Das Lied wurde im Super-Bowl-Werbespot der Nintendo Switch gespielt.[11]

Im April 2017 folgte die zweite Single-Auskopplung aus ihrem kommenden Studioalbum. Das Lied trägt den Titel Thunder und ist ruhiger als der Vorgänger. Der Track entwickelte sich zu einem Top-10-Hit in über 19 Ländern.

Parallel mit der Ankündigung ihres dritten Studioalbums Evolve wurde mit Whatever It Takes eine Promo-Single aus dem Studioalbum ausgekoppelt. Diese wurde mit der Bereitstellung zur Vorbestellung des Albums am 9. Mai 2017 als Download verfügbar gemacht. Die Single rückte unter anderem in Österreich und den USA schnell in die offiziellen Single-Charts. Am 15. Juni 2017 erschien Walking the Wire als zweite Promo-Single. Sie konnte heruntergeladen werden, sobald man ein Produkt aus ihrem Online-Shop bestellt.

Die Veröffentlichung von Evolve erfolgte am 23. Juni 2017. Sie erreichten in über 20 Ländern die Top-10, in unter anderem Kanada, Norwegen und der Schweiz zudem Platz-eins. In Deutschland übertrafen sie den Erfolg des Vorgängers und erreichten Gold-Status. Über 1,3 Millionen verkaufte Einheiten zählt Evolve. Parallel zum Album erschien das Lied I Don’t Know Why als Promo-Single, die ihnen Platzierungen in den österreichischen, schwedischen und kanadischen Single-Charts einräumten.

Am 12. Oktober 2017 wurde Whatever It Takes als offizielle dritte Single des Albums neu veröffentlicht. In vielen europäischen Ländern konnte der Erfolg getoppt werden; so erreichten sie in unter anderem Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz die Top-10 der Single-Charts. Das Video zu Whatever It Takes von Matt Eastin and Aaron Hymes gewann bei den MTV Video Music Awards 2018 in der Kategorie Best Rock Video.

Am 21. Februar 2018 wurde das Lied Next to Me als vierte Single-Auskopplung aus Evolve veröffentlicht.

Mit der Veröffentlichung der Single Born To Be Yours am 15. Juni 2018 kam es zu der ersten Kooperation mit dem norwegischen DJ Kygo.[12] Einen Monat später erschien am 16. Juli die Single Natural. Am 24. August erschien das dazugehörige Musikvideo. Der Song wurde als Hymne für die ESPN College Football Saison 2018 bestätigt.[13]

Am 18. September 2018 zeigten Imagine Dragons auf ihren Social-Media-Seiten einen Teaser zu einem Lied, das in den nächsten Tagen präsentiert werden sollte. Am nächsten Tag wurde auf ihrem Youtube-Kanal das Lyrics-Video zu dem Lied Zero veröffentlicht, das zum Soundtrack des Films Wreck-it Ralph 2 (Original: Ralph Breaks The Internet) gehört.

2018 bis 2021: Viertes Studioalbum Origins

Am 15. Juni 2018 veröffentlichten sie in Zusammenarbeit mit dem norwegischen DJ und Produzenten Kygo das Lied Born to Be Yours, das stilistisch in den Bereich des Tropical-House fiel, womit sie sich erstmals vom Alternative-Rock entfernten. Das Lied entwickelte sich in Europa zu einem kommerziellen Erfolg und erreichte unter anderem in Polen und der Schweiz Platin-Status. Am 17. Juli 2018 folgte die Single Natural, die vom US-amerikanischer Fernsehsender ESPN als Titelmusik der Übertragung des College Footballs ausgewählt wurde. Es erreichte unter anderem Top-10-Positionen in Österreich, Belgien und Tschechien. Des Weiteren rückte es bis an die Spitze verschiedener US-amerikanischer Rock- und Alternative-Charts.

Am 21. September 2018 wurde das Lied Zero veröffentlicht. Hier wurde bereits im zweiten Trailer des Musikvideos verraten, dass es Teil des Walt-Disney-Animationsfilms Ralph Breaks the Internet (Chaos im Netz) sein würde. Hierauf spielten auch das offizielle Musikvideo, welches die Bandmitglieder in verschiedenen Arcade-Spielen zeigt, sowie auch das vollständig im Internet spielende Lyric-Video an. Einen Tag nach Release traten sie mit dem Lied beim iHeartRadio Music Festival auf. Später stellten sie es unter anderem auch bei Jimmy Kimmel Live! oder der Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas vor.

Am 2. Oktober 2018 wurde das offizielle Cover sowie Merchandise ihres vierten Studioalbums geleakt und tauchte im Internet auf. Natural und Zero ergaben sich somit als erste Auskopplungen aus dem Album. Am Folgetag wurde es auch von der Band offiziell mit einer Dokumentation zum Hintergrund angekündigt. In dieser nannten sie die Gründe dafür, dass bereits nach so kurzer Zeit und mit Beendigung der „Evolve World Tour“ im September 2018 wieder ein Studioalbum veröffentlicht wird. Reynolds erzählte dazu, dass, obwohl Bands eigentlich eine kleine Pause nach einer Albumveröffentlichung und großer Tournee einlegen, sie bereits eine Menge fertig geschriebener Songs in der Warteschleife gehabt hätten, die bereit zur Produktion gewesen wären. Da sie nach der Veröffentlichung eine neue Richtung einschlagen wollten, entschieden sie sich zur Fertigstellung von Origin.[14]

Am 31. Oktober 2018 veröffentlichten die Imagine Dragons das Lied Machine als dritte Single-Auskopplung. Nur eine Woche später erschien Bad Liar als vierte und letzte Single. Diese entwickelte sich zu einem weltweiten Erfolg und konnte in mehreren Ländern in die Top-10 vorrücken. Das offizielle Musikvideo zeigt die Tänzerin Autumn Miller, die eine Choreografie zu dem Lied absolviert. Erstmals vorgetragen wurde das Lied ebenfalls beim Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

Am 7. Januar 2019 traten sie in der Halbzeitpause des College Football Playoff National Championship Games auf. Dort trugen sie neben Natural, Bad Liar auch eine Remix-Version des Liedes Believer vor, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem US-amerikanischen Rapper Lil Wayne entstand. Diese wurde am Folgetag auf verschiedenen Streamingplattformen veröffentlicht.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem schwedischen Produzenten Avicii entstand eine Neufassung seines Instrumentalstücks Heart Upon My Sleeve, welches auf dem Studioalbum True zu finden war. Nachdem diese Version nie vollendet wurde, stellten die Imagine Dragons den Song nach Aviciis plötzlichem Tod im April 2018 für das posthume Studioalbum Tim fertig.[15]

Gemeinsam mit der italienischen Sängerin Elisa nahm die Band das Lied Birds ihres Studioalbums Origins neu auf. Parallel zur Veröffentlichung der Deluxe Edition von Origins erschien die Neuaufnahme als fünfte und letzte Single-Auskopplung.

Seit 2021: Studioalben Mercury – Act 1 und Act 2

Am 12. März 2021 erschien rund zweieinhalb Jahre nach dem Release von Origins die Doppelsingle Follow You / Cutthroat, die als erste Single-Auskopplung des aufkommenden fünften Studioalbums diente. Eine zweite Version von Follow You, genannt Follow You (Summer ’21 Version) erschien am 4. Juni. Mit Wrecked und Monday wurden am 2. Juli beziehungsweise am 3. September zwei weitere Singles aus dem Album veröffentlicht. Das Album Mercury – Act 1 erschien letztendlich am 3. September 2021, gemeinsam mit der Single Monday.[16]

Im Oktober 2021 veröffentlichten Imagine Dragons 3 EPs aus ihrer Anfangszeit, namentlich Imagine Dragons (2009), Hell and Silence (2010) und It’s Time (2011), erneut, nun zusätzlich auch bei allen gängigen Streaming-Anbietern und auf CD. Jede der drei Wiederveröffentlichungen beinhaltet dabei zusätzlich einen bisher unveröffentlichten Bonustrack.

Im selben Monat stellte die Band außerdem mit Enemy zusammen mit JID die Titelmusik für die Fernsehserie Arcane, die im League-of-Legends-Universum spielt.[17] Es wurden zwei Versionen des Lieds veröffentlicht, eine mit und eine ohne Beteiligung von JID. Ursprünglich war es nicht auf dem Album Mercury – Act 1 enthalten, wurde aber nachträglich als erster Titel eingesetzt.

Nachdem die Band am 11. März 2022 die Single Bones veröffentlichte, wurde der Release des sechsten Studioalbums Mercury – Act 2 für den 1. Juli 2022 angekündigt.[18]

Stil

Die Musik der Band wird als radiofreundlich beschrieben, wobei Einflüsse aus Hip-Hop, Folk und Pop hörbar sind.[19] Die Band sagt selbst, dass sie sich in kein Musikgenre einteilt. Daher gibt es große Uneinigkeiten, weshalb meist von Pop, wie auch Elektro-Pop, oder Pop-Rock gesprochen wird.[20][21][22]

Tyler Robinson Foundation und gemeinnützige Tätigkeiten

Im Jahr 2013 gründete Imagine Dragons mit Tyler Robinsons Familie die Wohltätigkeitsorganisation The Tyler Robinson Foundation, um jungen Menschen im Kampf gegen Krebs zu helfen. 2014 fand dann die erste Tyler Robinson Foundation Gala in Las Vegas statt.[23] Die Band spielte außerdem für „Playing It Forward“ (S1 E2), um 100.000 US-Dollar für schulische Musikprogramme zu sammeln. 2013 wählte die Band mit mtvU vier Fulbright-mtvU Mitgliedschaft-Empfänger aus.[24] Im selben Jahr veranstalteten Imagine Dragons mit Do the Write Thing: National Campaign to Stop Violence ein Benefizkonzert.[25] Am 5. Februar 2014 spielten die Imagine Dragons außerdem auf dem „Bringing Human Rights Home“-Konzert von Amnesty International in Brooklyn.[26] 2015 veröffentlichten die Imagine Dragons das Lied I Was Me im Zuge des „One4 project“s, dessen gesamte Einnahmen der Organisation UN Refugee Agency, die Flüchtlinge aus dem mittleren Osten unterstützt, zugutekam. Eine Coverversion des Liedes I Love You All the Time erschien zugunsten der Opfer der Terroranschläge am 13. November 2015 in Paris.
