Freedom Child is the fifth studio album by Irish rock band The Script. It was released via Columbia Records[2] and Sony Music on 1 September 2017.[3][4][5]

Background

Speaking about how pop music has turned out since The Script went on a hiatus after their last album No Sound Without Silence, Danny O’Donoghue said "If you take a listen to radio now, there aren’t too many bands - guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Everyone has some kind of production element." The album was announced as members of the band took time out with their families in Ireland after four studio albums since 2008.[3]

"Rain" was released as the first single from the album and their first new song since 2014.[3][6][7][8]

Explaining how the album title was decided, O'Donoghue said "It came from Mark's side... His seven-year-old came up to him one day and asked, 'Dad, what's terrorism?'" The album title was inspired by its song of the same name, which addresses terrorism and the need for harmony.[9] He also mentioned how the album covers many topics.[10]

"Divided States of America", a song on the album was explained by O’Donoghue, who said "We were in America when Trump's inauguration was happening, and you couldn’t walk down the street without seeing how divided America was. The guy selling cigarettes could be a Democrat and the guy he's selling them to could be a Trump supporter."[11][12]

Matt Collar of AllMusic gave the album a positive review, stating that the album "is a vibrant, immediately engaging effort that finds them nicely balancing their various influences, from slick dance-pop to kinetic R&B and thoughtful, crowd-pleasing anthems." Eleanor of Live Arena also gave the album a positive review but with no score, stating that "the group's confident new sound, that strays away from the rock feel we're used to, strikes listeners with positivity and strength. It's worth a listen."[18]

The album has had several negative reviews, including from Lauren Murphy of The Irish Times, who stated that "it's too long, but more importantly, it's emotionally hollow."[14] Rick Pearson of London Evening Standard also gave the album a negative review, and said that "Truly, the road to musical hell is paved with good intentions."[16] Stephen White of The Last Mixed Tape gave the album a score of 2 out of 10, calling the album "an advert that will top the charts".[19]

The Script ist eine Pop-Rock-Gruppe aus Irland.

Geschichte

Daniel O’Donoghue (Gesang, Keyboard) und Mark Sheehan (Gitarre; * 29. Oktober 1976, † 14. April 2023) trafen sich in frühen Jahren in Dublin. In dieser Zeit fanden die beiden u. a. Inspiration in der schwarzen Musik aus den USA.

Der Gesang von Stevie Wonder war für O’Donoghue so etwas wie eine Initialzündung. „Ich versuchte, ganze Platten nachzusingen, sogar die Streicher-Arrangements. Viele gute Sänger ahmen ein Musikinstrument nach – Amy Winehouse ist z. B. ein Saxophon gewesen. Mein Instrument ist die Geige. Das Vibrato – damit kann man unglaublich tief empfundene Gefühle zum Ausdruck bringen.“[3]

Bereits kurze Zeit, nachdem O’Donoghue und Sheehan ihre Songwriting- und Produktions-Partnerschaft eingegangen waren, wurde ihr Talent entdeckt. Sie wurden in die Vereinigten Staaten eingeladen, um mit einigen Künstlern zusammenzuarbeiten, darunter Dallas Austin, Teddy Riley, The Neptunes und Rodney Jerkins. O’Donoghue und Sheehan waren nun ein „Backroom Team“, sie produzierten Demos für andere Künstler, ehe sie den ebenfalls aus Dublin stammenden Schlagzeuger Glen Power trafen. Power spielte bereits seit seinem 15. Lebensjahr Sessions und steckte das Geld in Solo-Projekte und in sein Heimstudio.

Mitbegründer Sheehan verstarb am 14. April 2023 nach kurzer Krankheit.[4][5]

Karriere

Die Debütsingle der Band trug den Titel We Cry. In den UK Charts stieg sie auf Platz 15, in den irischen Charts stieg sie auf 9 ein. In Deutschland wurde We Cry am 16. Mai 2008[6] und The Man Who Can’t Be Moved am 29. August 2008[7] veröffentlicht. 2009 wurden sie mit dem European Border Breakers Award (EBBA) ausgezeichnet.

Das dritte Album #3[8] erschien am 7. September 2012 in Irland, am 10. September in Großbritannien und am 9. Oktober 2012 in Nordamerika, bevor es schließlich am 25. Januar 2013 auch in Deutschland offiziell veröffentlicht wurde.

Die aus #3 ausgekoppelte Single Hall of Fame wurde als Titelsong des am 7. Februar 2013 gestarteten, von und mit Til Schweiger inszenierten Kinofilms Kokowääh 2 eingesetzt.[9] Der Song entstand in Kollaboration mit US-Rapper will.i.am von den Black Eyed Peas.

Ab dem 16. Januar 2015 ging die Band auf die No Sound Without Silence Tour, die in Tokio eröffnet und dann in Europa, Nord- und Südamerika, Asien, Afrika und Ozeanien fortgesetzt wurde. Parallel wurde das vierte gleichnamige Studioalbum vorgestellt. 2023 waren sie Special Guests im Rahmen von Pinks Summer Carnival Tour durch Europa.
