Behind Closed Doors is the third studio album by English hard rock band Thunder. Recorded between May and August 1994 at various studios, primarily Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia, it was produced the band's lead guitarist Luke Morley and Mike Fraser, the latter of whom also mixed the album at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, California. The album was released on 23 January 1995 by EMI Records in Europe and Japan, and was not released in the United States.
Following the departure of the band's original bassist Mark "Snake" Luckhurst in December 1992, Behind Closed Doors is the first (and only) Thunder album to feature his replacement Mikael "Micke" Höglund, who joined in February 1993. All five band members, as well as former producer Andy Taylor, contributed to the writing of the material on the album, which also featured a wide range of additional guest musicians. Behind Closed Doors peaked at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart.
Behind Closed Doors was promoted on the Behind Closed Doors Tour beginning in April 1995, which included shows in the UK, Europe and Japan, as well as a number of festival dates. Three singles were released from the album, all of which reached the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart – "Stand Up" peaked at number 23, "River of Pain" peaked at number 31 and "Castles in the Sand" peaked at number 30. All three singles also reached the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart top five.
Recording and production
After recording some initial demos of new material in London,[1] Thunder began pre-production on their third studio album on 6 May 1994 at Stanbridge Studios in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.[2] Mike Fraser, who had previously mixed the band's debut album Backstreet Symphony in 1990, returned as the main producer for Behind Closed Doors alongside the band's lead guitarist and primary songwriter Luke Morley (Fraser also engineered and mixed the record).[3] On 23 May, the band flew out to Atlanta, Georgia to begin recording of the new album at Southern Tracks.[2] Speaking about the decision to record the album in the United States, Morley explained that it was "a last-ditch attempt to motivate Geffen", the band's American record label, who he claimed had failed to support previous release Laughing on Judgement Day. However, the band's A&R representative John Kalodner later left Geffen for Sony Music Entertainment, and the album was ultimately not released in the US.[3]
Most of the recording for Behind Closed Doors was completed at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, although additional recording continued at Rumbo Recorders in Los Angeles, California throughout June and July.[2] Bassist Mikael "Micke" Höglund, who had joined the band the previous year, recalls that "The drums and bass were supposed to be recorded at Southern Track Studios in Atlanta, but our guitar tech was a big dope smoker and completely useless. When I asked him to set up my bass to make it as easy to play as possible ... he loosened the bolts that hold the neck to the body so that the strings and the fretboard were closer together", which resulted in his instrument being out of tune for the sessions.[3] Guitarist and keyboardist Ben Matthews praised Höglund's contributions to the album, suggesting that "His love of Geezer Butler and all things Black Sabbath was reflected in his playing and his songwriting contributions to Behind Closed Doors, giving it a darker and heavier feel."[4]
Recording of Behind Closed Doors was completed with additional sessions at Jacobs Studios in Farnham, Surrey, Armoury Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the Record Plant in Los Angeles.[1] The album was later mixed by Fraser at the Record Plant in July 1994, and mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound in New York City, New York.[1][2] Recording of Behind Closed Doors was completed by 12 August 1994, according to the album's liner notes.[1]
Promotion and release
"Stand Up" was released as the first single from Behind Closed Doors on 28 December 1994, accompanied by a music video filmed during a show at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London three weeks earlier.[2] The single debuted at number 23 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart, behind Van Halen's "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)".[5][6] "River of Pain" was issued as the album's second single on 13 February 1995, debuting at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart and number 5 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart,[5][7] and "Castles in the Sand" was released as the third and final single from the record on 24 April 1995, reaching number 30 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart.[5][8]
Behind Closed Doors was released on 23 January 1995 in Europe by EMI Records,[2] and two days later in Japan by Toshiba EMI.[9] Prior to the album's release, Thunder completed the short Stand Up and Be Counted Tour, which visited a number of UK cities in December 1994.[10] The opening European leg of the Behind Closed Doors Tour began on 5 April 1995 in Hamburg, Germany and wrapped up on 12 May at London's Hammersmith Apollo.[10] The band supported Bon Jovi alongside acts including Van Halen and Slash's Snakepit in June and July, and later toured Japan in late-August.[10]
Commercial reception
Upon its release, Behind Closed Doors debuted at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart, its peak position,[5] and topped the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart.[11] It remained in the UK top 40 for three weeks and the top 100 for a total of six weeks, and later returned to the chart for two weeks in May.[5] The album also reached the top 20 of the Scottish Albums Chart, peaking at number 18.[12] Outside of the UK, Behind Closed Doors reached number 56 on the German Albums Chart,[13] number 22 on the Swedish Albums Chart,[14] and number 44 on the Swiss Albums Chart.[15]

Reviewing the album for AllMusic, Eduardo Rivadavia praised Behind Closed Doors for featuring "accessible, yet commendably earthy melodic rock nuggets", as well as crediting the band for experimenting with different styles by noting that "Thunder also embraced slightly darker vibes with memorable results ... got the funk out successfully ... and noticeably toned down over all pomp rock thresholds".[16] Rivadavia also credited the band for "sticking to their guns" despite hard rock and heavy metal music becoming markedly less successful with the continued increase in popularity of genres such as grunge and alternative rock.[16] In a review of the remastered edition of the album for Record Collector, William Pinfold also noted that Behind Closed Doors was released in "an awkward time for the band and traditional hard rock in general", but nonetheless praised the record as "an impressively confident and mature recording".[17] Pinfold suggested that Behind Closed Doors is "a touch less essential" than Thunder's first two albums, but also highlighted the bonus disc for making the album "an essential purchase for many fans".[17]

Thunder ist eine Hard-Rock-Band, die sich 1989 in London aus den Überresten der Hard-Rock-Band Terraplane formierte.
Geschichte
Die Gründungsmitglieder waren Danny Bowes, Ben Matthews, Luke Morley, Mark „The Snake“ Luckhurst und Harry James.
Mit Hilfe von Andy Taylor (Duran Duran) erschienen 1990 bei EMI das Debüt-Album Backstreet Symphony und die Single Dirty Love. Vor allem das Album, das knapp die Top 20 der britischen Albencharts verfehlte, verkaufte sich überraschend gut. Noch im selben Jahr spielten sie im Vorprogramm von Aerosmith und eröffneten das Monsters-of-Rock-Festival in Castle Donington. 1990/1991 erschienen die Singles Backstreet Symphony, Gimme Some Lovin' , She’s So Fine und Love Walked In.
1992 erschien Laughing on Judgement Day, von Taylor und Morley produziert, das gute Kritiken bekam und bis auf Platz 2 der britischen Albencharts kletterte. Thunder tourten in diesem Jahr mit Iron Maiden in Südamerika und mit Extreme in Europa. Als Singles erschienen Low Life in High Places und Everybody Wants Her. Ende des Jahres stieg Luckhurst aus, der durch Mikael Höglund ersetzt wurde.
1993 gab es Konzerte mit Def Leppard und Ugly Kid Joe. Es erschienen die Singles A Better Man und die EP Like a Satellite.
Ihr Album Behind Closed Doors (produziert von Mike Fraser) erschien 1995. Im gleichen Jahr spielten sie unter anderem mit Bon Jovi und Van Halen. Ende des Jahres kamen noch das Live-Album Live Circuit und der Sampler Their Finest Hour (and a Bit) auf den Markt, dann verabschiedeten sich Thunder von EMI. Mitte 1996 verließ Höglund die Band. Als Ersatz kam Chris Childs, den es zunächst auch nicht lange bei Thunder hielt.
1996 erschien die wenig beachtete LP The Thrill of It All, auf der Thunder jetzt nur noch als Quartett zu hören war. Ende 1997 wurde in London das Doppelalbum Live aufgenommen, das 1998 in den Läden auftauchte und von der Kritik hochgelobt wurde. Kurz zuvor war überraschend Childs zurückgekehrt.
Er war auch 1999 auf dem kommerziell nicht erfolgreichen Album Giving the Game Away zu hören. Thunder tourten in diesem Jahr im Vorprogramm von Status Quo und im Dezember zum Abschied durch England. Kurz darauf trennte sich die Band.
2002 kam es zu einer Reunion von Thunder, aufgrund einer Einladung, bei einem Monsters of Rock-Festival aufzutreten. In der Besetzung Bowes, Matthews, Morley, Childs und James nahmen sie das Album Shooting at the Sun auf, das 2003 erschien.
In den folgenden Jahren gab es für Thunder einen deutlichen Aufschwung, in dessen Windschatten das Album The Magnificent Seventh am 21. Februar 2005 folgte. Das Folgealbum Robert Johnson’s Tombstone stand ab dem 30. Oktober 2006 in den Regalen. Nach noch einem weiteren Studioalbum, Bang!, das am 3. November 2008 erschien, gaben Thunder 2009 erneut ihre Trennung bekannt.
Ihr offiziell letztes Konzert fand am 11. Juli 2009 im Hammersmith Apollo, London, statt. Kurz danach traten sie noch auf zwei vermutlich schon länger gebuchten Festivals auf.
Trotz der erneuten Trennung trat die Band weiterhin auf, wie z. B. im August 2013 beim Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) in Schleswig-Holstein.
Im September 2014 kündigte die Band auf ihrer Facebook-Seite ein neues Studioalbum an. Am 25. November 2014 veröffentlichte sie eine Live-Aufnahme des Titelsongs des neuen Albums, Wonder Days, welches am 16. Februar 2015 via earMusic erschien. Das Album erreichte Nr. 9 in den britischen Album-Charts.
Im November 2016 stellten Thunder beim Louder Than Words-Festival in Manchester ihre Autobiografie „Giving The Game Away“ vor, die vom Bestseller-Autor Joel McIver verfasst wurde. Die Veranstaltung war binnen Stunden ausverkauft und beinhaltete Gespräche der Band-Mitglieder mit McIver sowie eine Akustik-Performance der Band.
Am 10. Februar 2017 erscheint mit „Rip It Up“ Thunder’s elfter Studio-Longplayer, der elf Songs enthält, sowie als Bonus eine 4-Track-Ep mit dem Titel „Broken Mirror“.
Im März 2017 waren Thunder auf Tour in Australien und Großbritannien, im April spielten sie u. a. fünf Shows in Deutschland. Im Herbst kehrte Thunder zu einer Tour zusammen mit Alice Cooper zurück nach Deutschland. Im darauf folgenden Jahr erschien das Livealbum Stage, das am 24. März 2017 während der Rip It Up-Tournee in Cardiff aufgenommen worden war. Im Januar 2019 veröffentlichte die Band dann ein Album mit Neuinterpretationen eigener Songs, das den Titel Please Remain Seated trug. Zum Record Store Day 2019 erschien eine EP mit dem Titel Please Remain Seated: The Others, die sieben Titel enthielt, die nicht auf dem im Januar veröffentlichten Album enthalten waren. Diese EP war ausschließlich als Schallplatte erhältlich.
Im selben Jahr wechselte die Band zu BMG Rights Management und veröffentlichte das Kompilationsalbum The Greatest Hits. Im Juli und November fanden die Aufnahmen zum Studioalbum All the Right Noises statt, das zwar im Januar 2020 fertiggestellt wurde, allerdings erst im März 2021 veröffentlicht werden konnte.
Trivia
Bis zum Split mit EMI gab es einen offiziellen Fanclub der Band, den sog. 'Thunder Channel!'. Neben den üblichen Gimmicks hatten dabei die Mitglieder nach jedem Konzert (außer bei Festivals) Zutritt zum Backstagebereich und konnten so die Band treffen. Heute werden vor den jeweiligen Konzerten diese Backstagemeetings auf der Bandseite im Internet verlost.
Thunder engagieren sich von jeher für die Obdachlosen in ihrem Heimatland. So sammelten sie beispielsweise bei verschiedenen Konzerten in England vor dem Gig von ihren Fans Sweatshirts, Jeanshosen usw. ein, um damit die Obdachlosen zu unterstützen. 1993 beteiligte sich Thunder zudem an der Kampagne Putting our house in order, einer Aktion von verschiedensten englischen Künstlern zur Unterstützung von Obdachlosen. Dabei nahmen diese Künstler unter anderem diverse Versionen des Rolling-Stones-Klassikers Gimme Shelter auf, so auch Thunder. Diese Version erschien zunächst auf einer Single der Kampagne, später veröffentlichte Thunder das Lied dann noch als B-Seite der Single Like a Satellite sowie auf der Best-of-Compilation Their Finest Hour ....
