Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory is the sixth studio album by English rock band Traffic released in 1973. It followed their 1971 album The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and contained five songs. Shoot Out, while achieving poorer reviews than its predecessor, did reach number six on the Billboard Pop Albums chart, one space higher than Low Spark had peaked in 1972. Like its predecessor, the original jacket for the Shoot Out LP had its top right and bottom left corners clipped. The album was remastered for CD in 2003.
The album was recorded with four members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (bassist David Hood, drummer Roger Hawkins, keyboardist Barry Beckett, and guitarist Jimmy Johnson). Hood and Hawkins appear on all the songs, and are listed as members of Traffic on the album sleeve. Beckett and Johnson only play on "Tragic Magic". Hood, Hawkins & Beckett would go on tour with the band as evidenced by the subsequent On the Road album.

Rolling Stone had a subdued reaction, saying that most of the songs are too even-tempered and uniform in structure and tone, but that "Evening Blue" and "(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired" are high points. They summarized that the album "embodies the inconsistencies that beset the band as well as the high points that have kept Traffic moving."[3]
Retrospective reviews were less forgiving, with AllMusic stating that both the compositions and the performances are uniformly weak, adding up to "a competent, if perfunctory effort in the band's familiar style",[1] while Village Voice critic Robert Christgau's review consisted of a single sentence followed by the note 'Giveaway: "(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired."'[2]

Versions of the album
The original, full-length master of Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory was initially only heard on the U.S. vinyl version. This was at a time when Island Records was manufactured and distributed by Capitol Records. When Island's distribution deal with Capitol ended, Traffic submitted a revised master in which "Roll Right Stones" and "Uninspired" were remixed and faded out early.[4] "Uninspired" was shortened by about 15 seconds and "Roll Right Stones" by a full two minutes. This shortened master was used for all subsequent copies of the album until May 2003. With Island's 2003 remaster of the album, the original full-length versions of these songs finally became available on CD. LPs and CDs with the shortened versions of these songs commonly falsely list the longer times for them.

Traffic war eine englische Rockband der späten 1960er und frühen 1970er Jahre aus Birmingham, England. Die Band bestand aus vier hochkarätigen Musikern, die zunächst in einer Art Landkommune ihren Sound fanden: Steve Winwood, Dave Mason, Chris Wood und Jim Capaldi.
Geschichte
Erste Phase
Winwood gründete Traffic im Jahr 1967[1], nachdem er die Spencer Davis Group verlassen hatte. Ihre Debüt-Single (Musik) Paper Sun war ein Hit in England. Die zweite Single Hole in My Shoe war sogar noch erfolgreicher.
Das erste Traffic-Album Mr. Fantasy (1967) war, wie die Singles, in Großbritannien erfolgreich, nicht jedoch außerhalb. Das zweite Album, Traffic, erschien im Jahr 1968. Auf diesem Album brachte Mason viele Kompositionen (z. B. Feeling Allright) ein und sang die Lead-Stimme. Es gab Spannungen, da Mason nicht im Schatten Winwoods stehen wollte. Mason ging. Nach einer Tournee in Amerika löste Winwood die Band auf.
Zweite Phase
Winwood spielte bei Blind Faith und begann anschließend, ein Solo-Album vorzubereiten, das letztendlich jedoch als neues Traffic-Album John Barleycorn Must Die erschien; es sollte das erfolgreichste der Gruppe sein.
Im Mai 1971 erweiterte sich die Band um Rick Grech, Jim Gordon und Reebop Kwaku Baah; es folgten weitere Alben. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys kam in den USA in die Charts, nicht jedoch in Großbritannien. Die Band löste sich erneut auf, nahm aber gelegentlich neue Alben auf: Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory (1973) und When the Eagle Flies (1974).
Dritte Phase
Capaldi und Winwood hatten Solo-Erfolge, doch 1994 kam mit Far From Home ein neues Traffic-Album auf den Markt; beide gingen wieder als Traffic auf Tour, doch der große Erfolg blieb aus.
Dave Mason hatte einige Erfolge mit Solo-Alben in Europa, besonders aber in den USA, wohin er sein Wirken verlegte. Trotz hervorragender Virtuosität an der Gitarre gelang ihm aber nie der richtige Durchbruch.
Chris Wood starb in Birmingham (England) am 12. Juli 1983 an einer Lungenentzündung und den Folgen seines Alkohol- und Drogenkonsums. Jim Capaldi starb am 28. Januar 2005 in London an Magenkrebs.
Die Band wurde im Jahr 2004 in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.
Besonderheiten
Im Jahr 1967 benannte sich die zuvor wenig erfolgreiche Londoner Band The Spectres, aus denen sich später Status Quo entwickelte, ebenfalls in Traffic um. Winwood und seine Bandkollegen konnten sich letztlich durchsetzen, so dass die Konkurrenten die Bezeichnung Traffic Jam wählten.
