Nut is the seventh studio album by Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, and the third and final album in the "soul, body and mind" trilogy. It was released on 9 September 2022, following the first two albums of the trilogy, Kin (2016) and Wax (2018). The first songs released from the album were "Canyons", "I Am the Pilot" and the lead single "Private Eyes".[1]

Background

Tunstall announced the release of Nut on 28 May 2022, completing her trilogy of albums based on "soul, body and mind", with Nut being about the mind.[2] Tunstall started working on the record during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, alongside writing music for a musical.[1]

The album was written and recorded during a profound period of change for Tunstall, including hearing loss, heightened self-awareness, love and a global pandemic.[3]

The album artwork was created by Josh McCartney.[4] On naming the album, Tunstall declared "nut" is a word that refers to mind or brain in Scottish slang. She also states "I love that the word also means a seed – the album artwork is all about the brain being a garden; you reap what you sow, you need to keep the weeds at bay, and there is an almost supernatural beauty to when things blossom".[5]

Tunstall released three singles from the album prior to its release: "Canyons", "I Am the Pilot" and the lead single "Private Eyes" – a true story "of a starlet lost in her own fame, and my getting a glimpse of her gilded prison..."[6] A music video was released for each single.

Tunstall announced her first UK tour since the pandemic to accompany the album, including shows in York, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.[7][8]

Critical reception

Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic cited two of the singles, "I Am the Pilot" and "Canyons" as highlights, as well as the album opener "Out of Touch" and "Synapse".[3]

John Apice from American Highways described Tunstall's vocals as "sumptuous" and mentioned the songs "tease with danceable energy & keep the commercial silliness in check". His highlights include "Dear Shadow", "Demigod" and "All the Time".[9]

Kate Victoria „KT“ Tunstall [ˈkeɪtɪ ˈtʌnstɔːl] (* 23. Juni 1975 in Edinburgh, Schottland) ist eine schottische Sängerin, Texterin und Komponistin und zählt damit zur Gruppe der Singer-Songwriter.

Leben

Die aus St. Andrews stammende Sängerin ist chinesisch-irischer Abstammung, wuchs bei Adoptiveltern auf und studierte an der Kent School in Connecticut sowie an der Royal Holloway Universität von London. Als sie ihre leibliche Mutter kennenlernte, erfuhr sie von ihr, dass ihr Vater Musiker war – nachdem sie diesen Weg bereits selbst eingeschlagen hatte. Zu Beginn ihrer musikalischen Laufbahn spielte sie in einigen Independent-Bands und spezialisierte sich dabei auf das Liederschreiben. Sie schrieb auch Musik für Kinder-TV-Shows und trat in diesen auch auf.

Ihr Alias „KT“ bezieht sich auf den Namen Katie. Als Studentin der University of London spielte sie Akustikgitarre in einer Studentenkneipe unter diesem Namen.

Der Durchbruch gelang ihr im Jahr 2004 mit einer Solo-Vorstellung des Songs Black Horse and the Cherry Tree bei der britischen Unterhaltungsshow Later with Jools Holland, wobei sie nur 24 Stunden Zeit hatte, sich auf diesen Auftritt vorzubereiten, nachdem der geplante Auftritt des Rappers Nas nicht stattfinden konnte, weil dessen Vater krank wurde.[1]

Das Debütalbum Eye to the Telescope wurde kurze Zeit später erneut veröffentlicht und kletterte danach in den UK-Charts bis auf Platz 3 (nach der ersten Veröffentlichung nur bis Platz 73). Es wurde im Juli 2005 für den Mercury Music Prize 2005 nominiert.

In Deutschland wurde KT Tunstall außerhalb der Hitparaden erstmals 2005 durch ihr Konzert bei dem jährlich vom ARD-Radiosender SWR3 veranstalteten New Pop Festival bekannt.

KT Tunstall war von 2008 bis 2013 mit dem Schlagzeuger Luke Bullen verheiratet, der Mitglied in Joe Strummers Band The Mescaleros war und auch für John Squire spielte.

Bei den BRIT Awards 2006 konnte sie sich den Titel des British Female Solo Artist (Beste britische weibliche Solokünstlerin) sichern.

Eine Reihe von Songs mit akustischen Instrumenten erschien im Oktober 2006 unter dem Titel KT Tunstall's Acoustic Extravaganza. Ursprünglich sollten die Songs ausschließlich über ihre Website verkauft werden. Sie soll das Album in nur 36 Stunden eingespielt haben.

Im September 2007 erschien ihr zweites Studioalbum Drastic Fantastic. Erste Singleauskopplung war der Song Hold On.

Tunstalls drittes Studioalbum Tiger Suit ist in Deutschland am 22. Oktober 2010 erschienen. Die erste europäische Singleauskopplung (Still A) Weirdo ist am 30. August zum Download erschienen.[2] In Amerika wurde stattdessen bereits am 10. August Fade Like a Shadow als Download-Single veröffentlicht.[3][4]

Tunstalls viertes Studioalbum Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon erschien im Juni 2013.

KT Tunstall spielt vorzugsweise Westerngitarren von Gibson, hier wiederum hauptsächlich die so genannten Dove-Modelle. Bei ihren Konzerten setzt sie oft das sogenannte „Live-Looping“ ein, eine Technik bei der der Musiker eine bestimmte Sequenz spielt, aufzeichnet und dann als sich wiederholende Schleife (Loop) abspielt, um sich selbst zu begleiten.
